Part of it is definitely an actor's or director's personal politics, but it becomes a whole other matter when they start insulting their {potential} and calling them ists and phobes for not having any real interest in their movie. Blaming your audience for you movie's or show's failure is never going to make it any better. All it does is increase the number of people who will not watch your show or movie. There may have been any number of people who were on the fence about watching but when you come out and start insulting them for not watching it ends up pushing them off the fence over to the not-watching side.

It is a function of what has become of society. Granted i was a kid in the 70s, teen in the 80s, bug even in the 90s, people didnt identify themselves by their ideology, let alone have it be first and foremost. More often than not you didnt know what even friends thought politically as it was kept personal. How do you tell people to keep it to themselves when you are beaten over the head on a daily basis? Read an article today where one side isnt bashing the other...they dont exist. It is funny people theorize disney pushed one star to say something. The other star was saying the exact opposite. Disney is accused of being one sided, yet this would have them playing both sides which they havent done before and then doing so over theoretically a kids movie. You arent likely to move that needle at this level til you move it on the general level. People need to chill the bleep out and learn to listen to the other side and not just lob insults from the rafters. Sadly, i dont see it changing, so i am not sure how anyone expects people at any level to stop having opinions and to not give them when asked. The change needs to start at the personal level, not the entertainment level.

There's been a balance in the past. They actually made movies for the movie-going public and at least tried to make a profit. Today, they're not even trying. They don't know what the movie-going public wants to see, which is why just about every movie crashes and burns.

I disagree. It just seems like Hollywood did better in past decades because we don't remember all of the flops; we only remember the successes. But sequels and reboots/remakes are hardly something that's exclusive to today. How Airport movies did they make back in the '70s? How many Jaws sequels did we get? How many silent movies got remade into "talkies" and how many B&W movies were remade in color? I will grant you that the number of massive box office hits does seem to have declined in the past decade or so. But up until relatively recently Hollywood had been churning out lots of hits, it's just that all of the big franchises have gotten old, and in many cases, a bit stale, and Hollywood hasn't figured out what exactly what audiences really want that they can turn into the next new franchise. And Hollywood has traditionally been risk averse, which is why we get so many reboots/sequels, and prequels, they're easy to make and in the eyes of the studio execs, easy money with little to no risk. They just don't know when to quit and recognize when franchise fatigue has set in.
