MonsterMan Thoughts Feelings and Reviews (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Damn guys. I love watching the show. Its like a Halloween store version of Face / Off.

I do think that an important part of the show, not to mention the most relate-able "character", is the SOTA boss. He's an interesting person, having to meet with huge name clients and trying to impress them while juggling with employees and schedules. (He gives me a stress headache watching him.) Though I'll note that I will not condone his love for Insane Clown Posse, of which he made music videos for and is tatted with. (I wonder if he helped make the Miracles video?)

I do believe that everyone else on the show is almost the villain against the Sota Boss, even his wife at times. (Joke in there somewhere)

Cleve becomes the anti hero character, and wins you back by being quirky, teaching his children the trade and pushing them to test their skills, or even staying over night to get an "impossible" job done.

Its just a bummer after watching shows like Tanked, Sand Masters, Cake Boss, that at the end there hasn't been a "wow", like those shows have.
Anyway, its kind of like watching the Walking Dead or Alcatraz, you know the potential for greatness is there, but it just ends up being, "it is, what it is."

Did the SOTA team really come up with DEVO's iconic red hats? That's a pretty big deal in our pop culture history. Those hats have stood the test of time.

You know, I gotta say that I really don't get all the hate and vitriol that's being directed at this show. Yeah, Cleve is a goofy guy and his daughter is an obnoxious brat, but he's doing what he loves with his family. Kinda hard for me to fault him for that.

Did the producers make him wear that idiotic makeup and contact lenses and wear those clothes to look like that? Well every monster maker I know wears ratty tshirts and jeans because when they WORK they get paint, resin, and dust on themselves, they don't look like a reject from The Crow.

And his monsters suck, the quality is so laughable it's pathetic, like that Saber Toothed werewolf.

Its a presentation/gimmick/marketing. You live your work. Through history we will remember the famous people who had an interesting rememberable part about them, even if there are way better people who deserve to be more in the limelight. (Abe Lincoln, Jimmy Hendrix, Chris Farley, The Beatles, Andy Warhol). Instantly you can visualize those folks in your mind, because they stand out and live on through history.

Why do we remember Adam Lambert from American Idol?

Why was Dog the Bounty hunter picked over any other Bounty hunter? There could have been many other worthy TV hunters, but its comes down to how ridiculous/entertaining that you will be on camera. Cleve looks hilarious as he walks and works on projects like its normal.

I totally see what you mean. When your work is good, you don't have to have a gimmick. Would Mythbusters still be good with out the facial hair? Totally, there just wouldn't be as a many "meme"/parody or rememberal aspecs of two the leads in our pop culture. Tory and the other team members are very interesting and just normal.

American Pickers is a great example of just two totally normal guys, that are made interesting by what they do. They are literally the most average guys ever and super rememberable fellows.

But don't forget Glenn Hetrick from Face / Off has a little bit of a more subtle Gothic look.

I don't think he would be the one to get a manicure instead of working though.

That's what he looks like while judging right? If he got in there and started actually building something, I doubt he'd look like that.

I hung out with the effects modeling and makeup students at the Art Institute and none of them wore anything they couldn't afford to lose. They were covered in dust and heaven knows what else walking around and were filthy head to foot. It's like working in your basement shop you don't wear good clothes when doing manual labor. Unless you're a few foremen i worked with then you just boss folks around while dressing nice.

The show needs to be taken at face value ,for what it is, a scripted reality show.Actually i think it hurts professional monster makers ,he seems so unprofessional, always late, cant be bothered with clients, between comments and faces how does he get work? But the one thing drives me crazy ,all those molds left outside in the elements, come on man! are you serious?
And honestly there are many artists on this forum can work circles around him easy

Like I said, you would be amazed at how realistic the character of Monster Man actually is to low budget MUFX people in real life. They are notoriously slow, later than Filipino time, cant budget anything out, never answer the phone, have some form of inferiority complex, large ego, dress the part, always set up directly in front of camera, have some inherent belief its someone elses job to clean up after them, are convinced their work is what makes and saves anything...

I think this is being universally ripped apart. I haven't heard one person who was like "this is awesome!!!"

If this gets a second season, I'll be shocked.

Given that they can cancel a show like Dresden, not pick up a show like Firefly, and make some of the stupidest films imaginable I'm of the opinion that they aren't trying to improve the scifi genre, be prepared for anything...
