MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Several months back I looked into some fake self-adhesive brushed metal vinyl, but didn't know whether to risk it.

Is this what you've used?
That's a brushed metal vinyl sticker indeed. Looks way better than grey plastic.
I can provide you a pair if you want.

About the battery box, I left the text but sanding sounds right.

That sounds awesome!

I might consider giving wet sanding a try then.
I've found a written tutorial on how to effectively sand plastic, so I should hopefully be able to get by without completely messing it up, ha.

I have been emailing the guy at that local print place I posted a link to earlier and he sent me this.

Is this the droid we are looking for?

Is anyone willing to make a plain pink hoverboard deck to sell? Being in the military doesn't give you a lot of time or space to make these type of things from scratch. I was just going to use the mattel board as a base but i wanted to use the more accurate magnet pieces from ebay, but that isnt possible with mattel's board. It seems like they went out of their way to make it so people like me couldn't accomplish what I wanted to do.

Mattel wanted to be **** bags and have raised plastic underneath the magnets. Making it impossible to attach the accurate pieces. They dont have any use or purpose, so im assuming they knew about the pieces on ebay.

EDIT: I created a WTB thread for this.

I was not going to buy the Matty Board originally because of the negative feedback in this thread. Then after a good think, I decided that I would because my MAGs are not 100% either, yet everyone that loves BTTF will immediately know what these items are.

Then also found a "new" board on eBay for US$99 (less the mini) and when I did a costing on making one, released that I could not make one for that price.

Those parts weren't on Ebay when Matty made their board. The raised areas are for easy placement of the overlying parts. And the parts on Ebay may be more accurate than Mattel's parts, but they likely aren't 100% accurate unless someone has recasted the ICONs-molded parts that GeneralFrosty sold a while back. Speaking of GeneralFrosty, he has offered to make wooden decks for folks. You could PM him.

Im pretty sure they existed before mattel released their board. I remember making my first board and wanting to get them but didnt have the money. I was 16 or 17 at the time. They probably weren't these specific parts that are on ebay right now but other people have put them up for sale in the past.

That's a pretty good surprise, it looks very nice!
You want to print the pink background or all the elements? Cause you can see the 3D effect through printings.

Well not sure. 1st step was to get feedback on the material, then look into pricing because the guy will probably have to order it in.

I am thinking layering the clear over the pink of the board first, then if need be, have it printed to enhance the colour, then layer the velcro and decals after.

For gluing purposes, it probably is best to have the back printed in the same pink as the board. I read earlier how that board with the lenticular material could only be glued under the parts that would have velcro etc stuck on top.

Have you made any progress on this?

The last thing I got back was that each circle was about the 20mm Dia. I dropped it there because that is way too big. If the circles were the same as small bubbles on bubble wrap, I would have got him to order it.

I will see who else can source the stuff locally. I have a few other leads.

I consider myself a very casual collector, and only have a few BTTF items, but had to have the Hoverboard. Just like the rest of you, I was very disappointed in the quality of the original decals. Mine were peeling and creased, something that annoyed me every time I looked at it.

Through my frustrations I discovered this forum and Roland's decal kit. It arrived yesterday and I applied them, it looks fantastic! I'm very happy with the result.

My goal was to replace the defective decals, leaving it as close to what came out of the box original as possible. I did not want to make it screen accurate, it is the wrong size for that anyway. As such, I left the original foot strap, velcro, and pink handlebar hole. It felt like a sin to do so, but I cut Roland's decal to match the original decal (removed the top wide velcro stripes).

The only downside is that I wish the stripes would be the color of the hero board and not the stunt board, but I understand why this color was chosen - it gives others the choice to put light green velcro stripes on for the hero board color.

Here is the result:

Once again - Thanks Roland! Great work!

hey gang, im alittle late to the pre-order... any idea when the next time they will be available?

halliwax

i think eBAY will be your best bet. As far as I know, Mattel's production run is closed. However, I think Roland has 1 more upgrade kit available to spruce up the Mattel board hurry!
