MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

I think I will order some clear lenticular from Sommers and make a few tests. Who knows - maybe I can find a way to glue that material without losing the lenticular effect?!

Hi Roland, this sounds great.

Maybe the clear lenticular from Sommers can generally be glued without losing the effect. I think it depends on how the lenticular material is made. I found out that "my" material can be glued upside down (I tried to put glue on the upper side) without losing the effect, but the effect itself on the back of this lenticular material looks wrong. The honeycombs are tiny there and look dented into the material so this is not the solution. Maybe the Sommers stuff is made in a different way that allows glue on the back?

Roland, if you PM me your address, I would be happy to send you sheets of the PVC material that I have left from my order.

Even if you shouldn't find a way to stick any of the material directly to the board, the graphics really help to hide the sticky areas. The light blue color shows where I put double sided adhesive tape. It works very well, no bulging of the lenticular material or anything. Even the edges lay down flat to the board.

The recess is much less than 2mm, it's more like 0.2mm. But you could use a thin clear film to fill the recessed area.
The lenticular sheet is about 0.5mm thick and is made out of really soft PVC. It is very easy to cut with a cutter or xacto knife.
I made a stencil from Roland's decal just showing all outlines. Then I fixed the lenticular sheet on top of the print. The print stays visible through the lenticular sheet. You just need to glue your decals in place and cut the whole thing out at the end, always using the stencil underneath as a guide. Works really well.

I was talking about the "gap" when you remove the original pink velcro. Don't know if you did that too, but there's about 2mm recess area.
I thought that you sand it too :)
Anyway I'll try to fill this with thin pvc. I'll post pics soon.

Now I understand. I just filled these two gaps with some clear polycarbonate, they are covered by the velcro on the final decal anyway.
I just did sand down the outer frame in order to be able to make the decal larger.

Do you think I have to sand the outer frame?
It seems very thin to me, maybe it's not necessary... I don't know

I don't know for sure. I guess maybe not.
When I was sanding the board down I thought I would be sticking the lenticular directly to it. This would have left a visible airlock around the edge if it wasn't flush.
Just give it a try and put the lenticular on the naked board. You will see if the gap is visible through the lenticular or if the lenticular will warp too much.
If it does, you could stick a sheet of clear one sided adhesive film to the recessed area of the board. This should even out the surface and will still show the original pink color underneath.

Re: MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Ok thanks a lot Thomas!
I think I'm ready now :)

I will be selling an original Matty board and stand in the junkyard once my post count is high enough. I bought an awful lot from the rpf, but now my father is very ill from pancreatic cancer, and living in Thailand when he is in the uk is very hard. I need to make some money for plane tickets.

I will be selling my bttf collection really cheap as soon as I can. I will charge cost on postage. So hopefully in a week or two I'll be Advertising.

I just received material from modulator and it rocks!
A good alternative for european folks around here.

Can wait to show you the final results... soon!

I give a try to a lavendar vinyl under the clear lenticular material.
The picture is from my phone but it's really close colour.

wow... I love your idea of putting vinyl underneath the lenticular as this allows you to choose exactly the color you want to see! :thumbsup

It looks really good, maybe a tiny bit too blue-ish as this lenticular adds a blue tint to any material underneath. But I know that these colors are very hard to capture.

The lavender vinyl also helps to hide the recessed surface of the board, that would have saved me hours of work. :unsure
However, it is really interesting to see how different the exact same lenticular material looks on your board. Maybe you can do some daylight pics when you're done.

I am really jealous of your vinyl decal :cool

I like the looks of your board already! :)

I don't know if this has been posted before - but I found a cool story about Dreamworks Designer John Bell and how he created the BTTF 2 future world. Funny detail: The Marty board was supposed to be a "swatch" branded hoverboard at first. But it was changed to the Barbie color scheme when Mattel signed on.

I don't know what you think, but I really prefer the Barbie hoverboard over the "cool" swatch board.

Very interesting to see all the other sketches;

Some more hero board images from the movie, showing the color scheme pretty well.

Yeah, I figured it out this mourning, you're right. Maybe a little bit to blue, but well, I spend too much time to go back to square one ;)
I've just finished to stick the velcros this afternoon and put the footpad back.
The daylight is gone, pics tomorrow.
Very interesting link Thomas, thanks.
