MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

What Mattel could not do with all their resources, two individuals have already knocked out screen accurate graphics. Mattycollector graphics look amateurish by comparison.

Truly amazing, han?! When all this project stay completed, it should be forwarded to all the world's knowledge!!! (More specifically Mattel's knowledge! Afterall, they have to learn some lessons... :love)

Roland,

If one took the Mattel board down to a bare slate, meaning...
  • the decals were removed
  • the front top channels for the pink velcro were filled in
  • the stock footpad was removed and area filled in in preparation for a new footpad to be added on TOP of the board as is accurate, and
  • the bottom magnets were removed, pink protrusion areas underneath the magnets removed, and protruding area under rear magnet bracket removed
...creating FLAT top/bottom surfaces, would your lenticular board graphics fit these flat surfaces of the Mattel board, or are the surface dimensions of the Mattel board too far off from what you used to create your lenticular graphics? ...

If you move the footpad to the correct position, my graphics shouldn't cause any problems. The board is slightly shorter than the screen used board. You just have to trim my graphics a little bit.

... Any plans do do a grey/silver strip to put around the edge? The board's edge is pretty rough under the sticker, so painting might not turn out so great. All it'd need to be is a quarter inch wide band of grey.

Today I tried various materials and methods of printing. I got the best and most screen accurate results by printing it on strong paper sheets (120 g/m²) and laminating it. I used glossy laminating films with a self-adhesive backside. The final result is a strong material and it should be very easy to stick it on the board, bubble free.

And here is the problem: I don't think that laminating films would work on the edge of the board. After the weekend I will go to our local construction market to look for silver gray adhesive tape.

I still have not received my hoverboard, but to hear all these comments I'm thinking of selling it you say? :confused

Nice! So no more vinyl? What's the difference between vinyl, and strong laminated paper?

Vinyl is too thin. Laminated paper is stronger and looks and feels more like the vintage photo paper (which was used for the original stunt boards) than Vinyl does. :)

I'm in Calgary, AB and still no sign of my hoverboards that were shipped on Dec 4th. No tracking number means Matty are going to be liable for a lot of missing Hoverboards, I'm close to the 20 business days they mentioned, buttheads!

For all not happy with dlivery inc myself its worth remembering Business days probably won't include weekends or days in the holiday season, mine was sent on the 5th which is 24 days but with weekends omitted and the uk holiday season it's around 16 working days as of 29th.

I imagine anytime now the international stuff sent via normal postage will start to arrive. Matty will have a way to track final delivery...... I'm sure there not going to let them go out without covering themselves for non delivery.

I shall not start worrying until another 4 working days have past, when I get to the next Friday ill be 1 day over there 20 day allowance and then ill hunt them down for a refund. It will also be interesting to see when it actually did get shipped as there should be a sent date on the tag....... For all I know it may not have been picked up for shipment until the 10th but simply marked as shipped as that's when someone packed it ready for it to be taking to the postal offices

@who45

That's true but I guess since we are just their northern neighbor, we didn't think it would take that long when some other members who lives so close to us got theirs early. We shall see when and if they arrive in the new years....

I agree its stupidly long, but are these being shipped from matty themselves or from a supplier in a Taiwan factory where there assembled and made and then posted.... my ghost trap was with me in 8 working days to the uk...... I expected the same level of service.

Yeah, my stunt bottom was nothing more than two printed phot paper sheets. You could tell where it was all scratched up (no lamination). If I were making a board or updating a Mattyturd, I'd see about having Roland's files printed to pieces of photo paper (perhaps one of those self serve photo kiosks like they have at Kinkos or something. I'd then apply it to my board with this really sick adhesive sheet I get from my plastics guy. The stuff is really thin, but almost iron clad in its adhesive quality.

Crud, now that I think about it that would be an awesome way to update the Mattyboard. I sorta wish I had kept my preorders now.

This looks incredible. A thousand times better. It's kind of annoying that they didn't get it right in the first place.

Roland - Would it be possible to make the top graphic slightly bigger overall so it comes a bit closer to the edges? I know it might be difficult to adjust for the velcro channels and the foot disk. I am planning on filling in the velcro channels anyway so it wouldn't be a problem. Let me know!

Razorsharp - Did you spray paint the foot disk white and apply green vinyl? What was your process for laminating the new graphic? Did you modify Roland's original graphic yourself or use his new files that he hasn't released yet?

As a graphic designer, I'm going to say this is (probably) a difficult change...

1. Is the gap around the decal even all the way around? It's probably not be a simple matter of scaling up and down.

2. Scaling it up at all would mean you change the size of the stripes. If you're leaving them bare, you could get away with it. If you're applying velcro over them you're gonna have to account for the size change (ie: get wider velcro or at least cut it wider)

This should give you some idea of the image scaling problem. The dark purple shape is the pink one reduced by 10%. The light purple is after another 10% reduction.

Unless, of course, this is a new, custom-made decal with all the resources saved in a file with separate layers. Then, by all means, I'm sorry for butting in.

Razorsharp... I'm... I'm... :eek ...Speechless!!!

IT'S AMAZING!!!

Did you really moved the footdisk? If yes, in the bottom part, the magnets will be misaligned with the footdisk above, right? Or am I talking nonsenses here?

Crazy see it all finished! You and Roland together are making the end of 2012 much better, if we consider the "Mattel Hoverboard's Saga" this year... afterall... what a year...

Congratulations!

Hope to hear from you soon!
