Marty McFly's Skateboard - Valterra Splatter Deck Conversion

I definitely agree with Dream 34, I too am a little frustrated about these being advertised as the "Most Accurate Replica" when, clearly, they are not. I was even told on Wednesday that the boards were going out on Thursday, and that I would receive my tracking number. That is something I'm still waiting on.

I've spent over $600 on 2 of these boards and I don't know about everyone else, but for me, that is A LOT of money. And as Dream34 said, it puts up a red flag when I've spent so much and don't hear anything.

Now for these copers that aren't correct, are we going to be sent the correct ones when they "become" available? In my experiences, if they don't have the right thing when they leave the factory, we aren't going to get them. I'm sure the extra postage isn't going to be spent to send us a small piece of plastic. So that means we, the die hard collectors/fans, will have to go and locate our own pieces to correct that issue.

I'm not trying be completely negative here, I love what you guys were trying to do. But the bottom line is that I paid $600 for a product that was described one way, and is going to come to me, and everyone else, slightly less than that. I'm about ready to just ask for my money back and go build my own board, from all the information collected by all the talented people that have contributed to this thread.

James, hopefully I can address the issues you guys are having with the description of the boards here. If not, I definitely suggest you guys ask for a refund. I can't say enough about how I wish communication and shipping had been handled differently. It wasn't my department, but I'm here trying to help. I can tell you that Madrid is now handling all the shipping and I agreed with Dream 34 that that's how it should have been handled from the beginning. I'm not sure why it wasn't, but it is now. Outside of that, I can't really comment on tracking numbers or shipping, other than to say all the boards are shipping and you'll all receive tracking numbers. I don't know on what day. As for the flat bottomed copers, I don't know that they ever will 'become' available, so I can't comment on exactly how it will be handled if they do. Dream 34 suggested we reach out to Z Flex, who apparently makes black flat-bottomed copers, and we'll do that. Understand that we're just as die-hard as you guys. I am, anyway. If flat-bottomed copers can be found, I'll work quite hard to make it happen for everyone.

Dream34, we didn't pull anything from Madrid's archives, we had two out of the original three boards that we know for sure existed. Possibly four. We had the hero screen-matched board and another production board that was also used by production. When you say "over the past several years almost every big skateboard company from the 80's has reissued vintage decks" and "in both those cases there were not any accuracy issues" there are so many unknowns and differences between what they did and what we just accomplished, it's not really a good or fair comparison. We certainly didn't choose which classic 80's board we wanted to re-issue based on the production availability of any of the components. Our goal was to tackle the McFly Valterra/Madrid boards and we brought the project to Madrid to work with them to re-create the most accurate production McFly boards possible. And, frankly, that's exactly what we did.

1. The problem with the trucks is that the company that originally produced them is no longer in business and the tooling for those trucks no longer exists. Without a cache of vintage trucks, Madrid compared the actual trucks on the screen used boards to available trucks and chose the ones that were the same quality, size, geometry and color.

2. From Madrid about the copers, "The copers were, without a doubt the hardest piece of the puzzle. You'd be surprised how few companies still even sell copers, and the flat bottoms are even more rare. If anyone gets their hands on flat bottom copers, we'd be happy to mail them the stickers." Dream 34 says that Z Flex produces a black version of the flat bottom copers. I'll pass that information on to Madrid and see if something can be done. But, suggesting that Madrid went with round copers because they were just being lazy or cheap is incorrect.

3. The wheels. Unfortunately, contrary to your assumption that Madrid still has the Fly Wheel molds, they do not. If it were that easy, we would have done it. Madrid had to make more wheels for this run of McFly boards. We would absolutely have prefered vintage style FLY wheels, but the molds just don't exist. Madrid wishes they were still around too. Your suggestion that Madrid is just pawning off 'dead stock' is also not correct. There were some wheels left over from the 2010 boards, and they probably did take them off their web store because our boards were going into production. But, the new run of wheels are exactly the same as the old run. They're the same size, shape and color as the original wheels and produced by Madrid. The only difference is the recessed logo vs. printed to appear recessed logo. It's a bummer for us too. I have two full sets of vintage FLY wheels, neither are the right color. Same boat.

I know those three things are a bummer, but fortunately, even though we hit those hurdles, we still managed to get a whole lot of epic things done. We completely redid the splatter pattern so it would be as accurate as possible, including matching all the colors even better. Madrid made a new board jig using the actual screen used board. The wheel well grooves were corrected based on the screen used board. The shape and placement of the grip tape and decals was updated using the screen used board. Every single Madrid decal was completely redesigned using original vintage decals, and all the colors were matched. Plus - we found the original screen used board and then agonized over making the best, most accurate production boards possible for everyone who wanted one.

The available hardware that Madrid was able to acquire so they could produce these boards in quantity for the fans of Back to the Future, was their best option, outside a few people's ability to find vintage parts. The deck is flawless and the hardware is fantastic. We certainly didn't work as hard as we did on this project just to **** you off, even the few die-hards of which we're members. We did it because it was an awesome opportunity and at the end of the day, the difference between what you're saying and what I'm saying is the word production. There is no doubt that a few of you could pull off a more accurate board with vintage parts, but I don't think any of you could pull off building 300 of them any more accurately than we did, which is very accurate. The communication was terrible and I'm here to do what I can to repair that. If you're still upset about the board and you don't want it, just ask for a refund.

P.S. You were correct when you suggested that Madrid made the original boards. The splatter pattern actually belonged to Bob Schmeltzer, who had/has his own line of skateboards and was the skateboard stunt double for Eric Stoltz. One of the coolest things about the screen-matched board, is that it was both Eric Stoltz's and Michael J. Fox's hero board, even though there was at least one other pretty much identical board. Luck of the draw. In the photo of Eric Stoltz and Bob Schmeltzer, the hero board is the one Eric Stoltz is holding. The board Bob Schmeltzer is holding has not turned up to my knowledge.

I found white, flat bottom copers last year from a skateboarding web site online, and am trying to determine where I got them since I didn't save the receipt. They're out there, but are hard to find. They were new stock, as far as I know.

Before I found these, I bought a set of flat bottom copers directly from the Madrid web site, only in yellow. I tried painting those, but wasn't happy with the results. Nevertheless, Madrid did have some around. I got them in February or March I think?

If you figure out where you got them, definitely let me know. I'll ask Madrid about the yellow ones, although if they still have yellow ones, they probably didn't mention them because they're yellow.

Can we ever see a full frontal picture of the top side of the board and not an angled view?

The coolest thing is, that there's more than just one hero board in the movie. Look at the position of the lower left corner of the big "Madrid" sticker. ;)

You're totally right, Roland. The one Eric Stoltz is holding in that image did get the most screen time. It's the board MJF is holding in the opening scene (the one that hits the plutonium case) and the one MJF is riding behind the jeep. Luck of the draw, as they were clearly meant to be the same, and interchangeable. Here's a top down image of the "A" hero board (because it's the first board seen).

And here's the "C" board, clearly different. Also a board used by production, but I don't think it got any screen time. The front grip tape is cut differently, and the placement of all the decals is different. Hard to say exactly what this board was for, but it's to the same amount of wear as the other two boards and it came from the set and was given to Madrid at the same time the "A" board was given to Valterra.

Gotcha. I just wondered because if they had yellow ones, it seems like white ones would have been easy to make. ::shrugs::

Who at Madrid do we contact about extra stickers for the copers? I'm going to transplant the flat white ones I have onto one of the two boards I ordered. Actually, if they could send me four stickers, that would be even better. Two for now, two for when I get a second set of copers for the second replica board -- assuming Madrid doesn't send everyone replacement copers to begin with :)

Well, Shane at Madrid is the one who said he would send anyone who actually had flat-bottomed copers the new redesigned stickers. But, I'd be happy to handle this for any of you who do. I'll be down at Madrid this week and I'll pick up a few sets while I'm there. I've seen more people on Facebook receiving their boards today. That's a relief.

About the yellow and black copers flat-bottomed copers, I relayed the information to Madrid and I asked about how they're made. Are they cast? Or are they cut from a longer tube? If they're cut and not cast, it might have a lot to do with how hard they are to find. But, I don't know.

About the trucks, I was told what they were but I want to verify that info one more time before I post it here, just to make absolutely sure I don't say red again even though I meant orange. :)

Would you mind picking me up 2 sets of the decals, please? I'm going to go ahead and order the Z Flex copers, so I'll just put the new decals on them.

Thanks!

Four stickers for me please? Two for the copers I have, two for the second set I plan to pick up down the road.

Thanks for being so helpful! :)

I'm now hearing that those few who have received boards are not receiving the COA. Another instance of the product received not being constant with what was advertised and paid for by those who placed orders. What is so hard about getting this right? Anybody know what carrier is being used? I received what appears to be a bogus tracking number from WGB with no carrier information provided. I tried to input the number in the tracking system for USPS, UPS, and FedEx and all said it was not a valid number. Honestly what is so hard about shipping these things and why is it taking so long? Even if it was one person filling out slips and calling the carrier for pick up it should not take more than a few days at the most. On top of that WGB has done nothing to accommodate any of those effected by this SNAFU. Really they could at least send the things 2 day shipping or offer something for the inconvenience, but no just one hiccup after another with no remedy or responsibility taken, just excuses. Just to keep a running list.

When the boards were initially ordered shipping was promised in mid-October.

The last week of October we were told there was a "problem with the silk screen" that delayed production but the boards were shipping "Right now"

Then we were told they were shipping the 1 st week of November and tracking numbers would be provided.

Next it was the boards are shipping November 12 and we'll provide a tracking number, oh and Madrid is doing the shipping.

No tracking number received as of November 12 so I contact WGB

"tracking number" with no carrier information provided, for only one of the two boards ordered. Number entered into tracking systems of three major shipping entities and all say number is not valid.

Who at Madrid is doing the shipping, do you guys have the email address of this person so they can be contacted? No offense but at this point I would rather go exclusively through Madrid. I would also like to know the carrier and method of shipment (ground, 2nd Day, etc)

I wonder if there's any specific order the boards ship in, I placed my order on Aug 29 th which was quite early on so I would be miffed if people got there's first ordering later
