Mandalorian Reference Thread

Hey all! I've been following this thread for a while - I enjoy costuming and I've wanted to do a complete build of the Beskar Mandalorian armor since I saw the second episode. I have a lot of 3D design, printing, sewing, and electronics experience, and I'm SUPER excited for this project. I've done some initial modeling and have the Pauldrons just about ready to print - and I'm starting my work on the blaster. I saw a lot of the existing work done on it, and some of you guys have achieved truly spectacular results!

I'm quite new to RPF, do you think it'd be best to post status updates in this thread - or start a thread specifically for the project?

Also - for fun, here's some initial renders of my Pauldrons! In the central raised section I have a channel which matches some of the shots I saw in the show, and will also be the perfect place to mount a hook and some fixing clips to the flight-suit.

UPDATE: I've set up the project thread here - I'll try to keep it updated as the project progresses, and I'd appreciate your feedback!

Not reference, but since this seems to be somewhat of a Definitive 'The Mandalorian' Prop Thread, thought I'd share a simple project I made over the holidays. A handful of Beskar ingot cloths!

Now I just need some Beskar ingots...

These look great! Was about to sew something similar myself once material arrives. What did you use for the black base cloth? I've got some faux suede on the way for another project so figured i'd knock some of these up with the offcuts...

Thanks

I used a black felt, but I'd definitely use something with less structure and with a more suede appearance if I were to do these again.

OK cool, thanks for the advice! I'll see if a faux suede gives it the right weight when it's unfolded. Will post pics if it works out.

It looks to me from screenshots that whatever they used for the black material was relatively thick and had a raw edge. Also can't quite tell what colour thread is going on or whether it's visible from the underside so assuming black.

Hi there! Hope you guys can help me a little, i am not certain about the painting of the ear pieces and the vent.
I looked now a weak for reference pictures and they are very different. Do those pieces have black spots like in the files i added or are that parts all a solid color like the helmet?

Thanks in advance :)

On my helmet, I painted the semicircle black, but because the print I bought had the ears printed in one piece, I just heavily weathered the inset part that's technically the black rectangle in your rendering.

Same with the key slots in the back. Just heavy weathering.

I hope that helps.

I know it keeps getting beaten to death and I realize that someone on the set stated that the jumpsuit is brown, but looking at these behind the scenes shots, that flight suit looks faded black to grey to me. Looks specifically at 1:33. That is not brown.

I'm wondering if the people from the set that stated it was brown was referring to a different flight suit, like Death Watch. Position 1:36 shows a brown flight suit.

Keep in mind kids that colors change according to the light hitting them.

I have tan shirts that switch color depending on the light, also Coyote brown looks olive green in low light.
Let's not forget the whole blue vs brown Solo Hoth jacket thing.

Don't forget the Blue vs. Grey thing for Han's ESB jacket.

So I’ve been asked a few times about the armor paint ups I’ve been doing. Apologies about the photo dump. I think I went over my painting process previously so I’ll skip the boring details, on to the pics.

Here are a few shots from a recent set I did. These are the kit that reelprops is selling in the Junkyard, and I actually did two at the same time. The only change I made was printing my own darts and flamethrowers for the gauntlet.

Also threw in a pic of Master Edi’s gorgeous baby Yoda sculpt I was able to paint last night. Such a wonderful little sculpt

Fantastic painting! Can you share paints used on Baby Yoda? Also, what eyes you used?

Sure! Paints were mostly Casey Love’s Badger paint set, along with Liquitex purple, Golden Transparent Iron Oxide, and Tim Gore’s Bloodline Blood Red.

The cup on the left is the base tone. Darker green was for spattering and shadows. Also mixed up a more blue version of this green for the ear tips and spattering. I’m cheap so I reuse cups, but you can see the original purple and ear flesh tone in the darker green cup too.
Then the purple/red. I mixed a few different shades of it. Airbrushed and hand painted. I also spattered with a transparent orange.

It started as a pretty deep green and I wanted to keep that here and there, but also bring it closer to the silicone prototype Legacy made for Sideshow.

Mr Mold Maker- You are truly a master at painting. Beautiful work!

Not sure if you covered this already, but if you could explain the process for the Beskar painting, I would really appreciate it. I'm having one hell of a time getting it to look right. Unfortunately in most cases I am touching it too soon and putting thumbprints in it.

This is great and very helpful. Can you direct me to the Casey Love set. His work is amazing but I wasn’t aware he had paints available. Also, where did you source your eyes?

Thanks again for the share!!
