Luke's Lightsaber Mando series finale.

It was mentioned in the main Mandalorian thread, and was pointed out that Luke shrugged off his dark brown cloak after falling into the Rancor pit, and that this would have to be a new one anyway. Not disputing that merchandising may not be behind changing the color of his replacement to black. Maybe...
Agreed...i guess my main point was the different saber. In ROTJ, i didn't think it was purposefully done to have many hilts for the same person...but since there are people like us around who love lightsabers, I'm thinking it might be purposefully done this time...I'm sure the new Hot Toys Luke Skywalker Walker (Mandalorian edition) is right around the corner...lol. Anyways...this is a blast and a part of me likes that there is a new version of Luke's hilt since he is my favorite, ironically after the release of the Mom Verity Hero. What's one more hilt? Lol. Anyways...great discussion and everyone on these forums has taught me a ton and im thankful for that.( thanks for the reminder of the Rancor pit...ugh, i feel so stupid..lol)

Hmm well, I guess after he threw it away before being fried by palatine maybe he made another new new hero saber.

maybe he’ll throw this one away and make a creepy uncle for sequels. Hah

I’ve never really jived with the “they changed it to sell toys” angle. Especially where props are concerned. Are they constantly re-issuing toys with alternative designs to sell more? Sure. Is there a low key edict to make new and cool gadgets, ships, and weapons to creators at the concept phase so the toy people have new stuff— I’m sure.

But regardless of the details, the saber is meant to represent the Luke hero. A prop team on production has no connection to merchandising when they are on set.

The simplest answer is always the most likely. Either somebody on the team had one of Rylo’s, or their source material was the same as his, which be imaged off the Elstree.

To me the bigger mystery is WHY this was done instead of using the TROS, TLJ, or even the TFA versions that Lucasfilm would have. Or for that matter, why not scan in the actual hero since it’s one of the few OT sabers Lucasfilm actually has.

Maybe it was just more efficient for the team on staff to build some from scratch.

Yeah at this point I'm just as interested in the story as to how this particular saber was chosen, passing over several versions that are more accurate (based on the most recent study) and more readily available as I am in nailing down the specifics of the saber itself.

If you go back to my original point, you will see that basically i was saying, if everything else about this show was precisely planned out, then WHY would we assume that the saber change, or especially anything about Luke Skywalker wouldnt be? I too agree with you on the bigger mystery. Rylo's came out a while ago...it would be intriguing to me if this was Filoni's personal saber he owned to reveal his own personal connection to the character of Luke, or just to Star Wars in general...Maybe we will find out on Christmas on the making of season 2.

I too find it questionable that it's a Rylo although it certainly looks possible.

As said before, they have access to the LFL archives. That means they have the original ROTJ "Hero", the 2-3 versions made for the ST (I'm guessing the TLJ/TROS are the same saber since it was barely seen in TROS), the MR versions, and the Disney legacy sabers all within arm's reach so-to-speak.

I'm not saying they WOULDN'T use fan-made stuff, but this isn't the same as TLJ/TROS where they needed a Graflex replica to beat up. Regardless of what they ultimately used, it's not like we will ever know why they chose whichever version they used. The only sure thing I suppose as far as their intent was that they deliberately wanted something more like the ROTJ than what was seen in the ST.

I would have personally loved for them to use the V2 but I guess Luke has had a few years at this point to clean his saber up whereas in ROTJ he had just recently built it from spare parts found in Obi-Wan's hut. :)

Most likely less hassle having a independent prop department source one then go through lucasfilm paper work

It makes sense that production would have all of these resources such and props and references from the archive. However, I read that they used set pieces and items from Galaxy Edge, items from Anovos and relied on Storm Troopers from the 501st for some shots. Maybe it’s a budget thing or more likely a time thing

I think Favreau and Filoni have also discussed in the docuseries (about the show) that fan ingenuity and lore is not just a value of the show but seen as an asset. Like when they described bringing in the 501st in S1 and all that armor became screen used, I wonder if they could have felt the same sentiment regarding a fan prop (one of the coolest and tightest to ever be produced) and wanted it to be in the show. I mean, what an incredible and true definition of fan service if that were the case. How incredible too, if they continue to plan to use it and we get to see the Rylo reveal in action on screen.

Im just saying, I think the team on this show has the healthiest appreciation for their greatest asset (the work of the fans) we have ever seen.

I'm sure a lot of it IS due to the budget considering the amount of original costumes/props/materials they had to create and the effects budget. Background stuff can come from anywhere and the 501st have been used for official events for years now so it's the next logical step to save money or time. We know the hero TROS graflex was a Roman replica, laregly because they had to modify it so much to begin with. Also, the entire concept of using FX lightsabers for practical stunts came from the fan produced stuff.

I do like that fandom is now viewed as an asset, particularly when it comes to props and design. That is one thing we can thank the Disney era for as not that long ago (Looking at the Anakin and Obi-Wan ROTS sabers) that was not the case.

Still, Luke's lightsaber is sacred even among the people at Lucasfilm... I am sure that some thought and reasoning was put into the choice regardless of what they eventually went with. We know that Favreau and Filoni absolutely pay attention to these small details, much more so than the prior filmmakers.

Amen..100% agree

well, i think i was the first to think it was a Rylo, atleast on this forum and every part of me still believes it is. I tend to romanticize everything Star Wars but imagine if Filoni bought a Rylo, or was given one, and that has been on his desk as a momento(his Luke Unicorn) and decided, "hey, i've put my life into Star Wars and this saber represents all that Star Wars has given to me, now i want my personal Luke hilt to be filmed in this series, along with Luke himself as my Thank You back to the fans because i'm still a fan, still one of you." That would be awesome if true. Could be that simple.

All these findings are very interesting. Great work as always guys. Anybody have a clue what the stunt saber was? Somebody mentioned on Facebook that their friend who worked on the show (presumably?) said it was a Korbanth LS6, but I have no way to confirm that. Anybody have the 4k screenshots yet or should I take a crack at screenshotting it later?

lukyanov posted some great shots here.

As someone who owns an LS6, the only (perhaps unlikely) possiblity is that one was used as a bladed stunt for the wider shots.

For the static prop, the LS6 in the hero set-up has too many features that deviate from what we're seeing here. Different spacing of triangles on the control box, smaller screws, thin upper grenade ring, wide gap below the control box to accomodate the gullwing feature, Creepy Uncle style emitter etc.

Here's some higher res captures...
