Luke's Lightsaber Mando series finale.

Is it possible that somebody on the prop team had a Rylo as their own and used it for the basis for making their own props?

As for the Disney products-- everyone knows those are just toys not meant for anything professional ;P

I'm thinking that's a real possibility. Or, they googled Luke rotj lightsaber pictures, found pics of the Rylo or the Elstree reveal and then tried to copy it.

Between this and Adam Savage using the wrong one in his one-day build, it's clear my book is not getting the proper circulation amongst professionals!

Anyone with screencap technologies-- how about some shots during the duel? It was shown pretty clearly during the fight, I'd love to have eyes on the FX saber as well for comparison.

This seems most likely to me. The Elstree is all over google images, and I doubt that they took the time to source any images. Your cg model is looking good btw.

I tried. But I don't have the 4k video to play with.

The 48th Ronin Without going into the exact angles and section lengths of the Rylo Reveal, are you able to tell us it's approximate scale to the larger, more accurate hero measurements established in the past couples years? 90%, 93%, or...?
Well, I'm certainly no expert on the "larger, more accurate hero measurements established in the past couples years," but the Rylo reveal measures approximately 10.65625 inches or 270.66875 mm from the rear face of the pommel to the front face of the emitter plate. Here it is with my own Nicksdad Hero for comparison - Rylo at the top, Nicksdad below:

It seems like it would be easier to just go to Ebay, find a good looking metal Luke saber that matches your reference pics, and $300 later you’ve got a Luke lightsaber.

Isn’t one of our members here on the RPF one of the prop guys on the Mandalorian? I know he can’t spill the tea because of NDAs, but if the production is buying/using Romans thermal detonators it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they purchased one/a few- maybe via their RPF prop guy. Seems a lot easier/faster to buy one that looks like they want than machine one from scratch.

The 48th Ronin in the comprehensive MOM ROTJ hero discussion thread, it was pretty firmly established that the real hero was 278mm pommel-to-emitter-face, so this means the Rylo is about 97.36% scale to the actual metal hero from ROTJ. Thanks for allowing us to determine that.

Hi guys, just in from a rained out camping trip and seeing this. Someone hit me with the cliff notes.

I haven't actually even seen an entire episode of The Mandolorian yet (I know, I know) so what are we talking about here? Are you guys suggesting it's my static reveal or functional reveal? Forgive me, I haven't read the entire thread.

Looking over the pics, now.

The problem would be that during the time of the Mando production, there wouldn't be more that one Rylo reveal in any one person's hands at a time. It would make sense if they bought a bunch of Roman's sabers, or a bunch of mine. But the Rylo reveal is long out of production and they sell for a grand each. So, if it was a real Rylo, then I'd guess someone on the Mando prop crew had one from Rylo's run and brought it onto set as the hero, after making a bunch of fx stunts (or possibly buying some other fan made stunt hilts from another source).

I agree. If you had to pick a first episode to see all the way through, this would be the one!

Maybe it was Jon or Dave’s own prop?

Guys, it's cool. I'm not going to get to this show for a looong while; lots going on. I appreciate the spoiler concerns. Really, it's okay. Hit me.

So, a couple of quick thoughts.

I have a number of friends who are active prop makers and we have a lot of talented people on the RPF who work on popular productions. More than a few pieces went to some established guys so it wouldn't be at all odd. I mean, It's happened with other pieces over the years...always fun.

It makes sense from a practical standpoint. As for the working reveal, one pretty much has to be a student of that saber and want it badly to reproduce it. Knowing what goes into machining each and every piece on that thing, I don't see a random prop maker sitting down and gearing up to redo what some other guy already did. Just too time consuming and expensive when the work has already been done, ya know? It took me over a year just to get the engineering done by referencing the Elstree reveal. Just a nightmare...

Having made a static version years earlier, it was difficult to force myself into compliance with some of the measurements (canon) on the Elstree. There are a number of funky hallmarks on that piece that make it what it is; those little quirks that separate it from the other ROTJ sabers. My eye is pulled to a number of those, now. I'll try and point a few out when time permits.

For now, I'm Just going to answer a few emails/questions right here in one shot:

No, I didn't protect (coat) the brass on mine. I wanted all the metals to age down naturally. Yes, the pommel rotates so positioning can be anywhere. The saber could indeed be worn vertically without opening. I was concerned about the metal on metal contact of the pieces creating burrs over time and possibly freezing things up. With that, I heavily greased the mechanisms when they were new and put smaller o-rings in the emitter so everything would move freely. Sizing up the o-ring and tightening the guide rods (set screws) essentially allows the whole prop to be tensioned. Not everyone followed my instructions about lubrication so time and handling have stiffened many up to the point they require a little conviction to get moving.

More later but yeah...fun to speculate.

I didn’t know romans thermos were used for the show!

Looking good!

Maybe it was Jon or Dave’s own prop?
i know we are all speculating right now, but i'm pretty sure Filoni has an eye for detail and let's not forget the marketing aspect of "minor changes". Almost no one, in fact, i haven't heard anyone mention that Luke's cloak is black and not dark brown like the ROTJ one. The signs have been there in front of us the whole time, especially me. I work in retail for 24 years and this year the toys that came out for star was was ahsoka, reissue slave 1, Rotj Jedi knight Luke among the Mandalorian cast. The toys predicted the outcome of what was to appear in the episodes and i thought it was too good to be true, but "it was all true.." Thankfully. So Luke was given a slightly different look with a new saber that is different from every other Luke we have seen on screen...this is purposeful...and i'm truly ok with it..lol

It was mentioned in the main Mandalorian thread, and was pointed out that Luke shrugged off his dark brown cloak after falling into the Rancor pit, and that this would have to be a new one anyway. Not disputing that merchandising may not be behind changing the color of his replacement to black. Maybe...
