LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! Updated pics (10/12/12) DONE!

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

MAJOR UPDATES!

First off, thanks a ton FakeBritishAccent! You've been a tremendous help with this project so far.

Worked my butt off today and got quite a bit done.

Used three layers for the grip.

IMG_0509_zps0f3444ee.jpg

Glued them together and sanded them for probably three hours straight...mostly with my bare hands and sandpaper.

I really like how the grip turned out. It sits flush with the PVC coupler too.

Then I etched straight lines on the front endcap with the tablesaw. That made me super nervous, but it worked pretty well. Still have to sand them down.

I got the back endcap pieces cut as well. All in all, it's turning out okay.

(Sorry for the crappy picture quality, final pics will be taken with my canon t2i)

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

Few updates dudes!

Made the fake weld lines out of plumbers epoxy. They didn't turn out very pretty, but this entire build has been a little less than perfect anyhow, haha.

Attached the rear endcaps and inner tube do the handguard. There's no turning back now.

Here it is almost ready for a first coat of primer.

I know no one is following this thread, and no one seems to care, ha, but thanks for looking.

Nice to see you making some more progress. I am really looking forward to how it looks once you get it all painted and finished.

And yes, I'm sure some people are watching this thread intently to see if they can make their own blunderbuss on a budget.

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

Just made an account to thank you for putting this project together. I bought the same jacket and conversion kit for myself after seeing what you've done! The progress so far on your build has been both impressive and encouraging. :)

What?! I'm following this thread, and I'm super impressed with what you're pulling off with this build. And it's worth mentioning that even though I'm the first person on the RPF to attempt a blunderbuss, YOU'RE going to be the first to actually complete one :thumbsup

Keep up the good work!

I've been watching! Its coming along way better than I could ever do!

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

Thanks fellas! It's been a pretty fun build, and painting it will be the best part!

Speaking of paint...what would be my best option for detail paint? For things such as the rust, weathering and wear?

On my Proton Packs, I used rust colored enamel paint. I painted the areas then took a brush dipped in thinner and kind of smeared the rust paint a little so it didn't have such straight lines. after that I used a glue stick over the painted areas and pour brownish craft sand over that glue area. After letting it dry and knocking off the loose craft sand, it was a very convincing rust.

For the metal wear I would use silver Rub 'n Buff

In order to get my blunderbuss' finish particularly grimy, I'm going start with a cheap grey primer by Colorplace, which I know can clump up if sprayed a certain way to copy the rather bumpy texture of the original prop. After that, I'm going to experiment with pencil lead dust and drybrushing a variety of acrylic blacks and dark greys in different finishes. And before clearcoating it, I'm going to brush on a bit of baby powder to give the whole piece a general haziness.

The gripframe, trigger, and triggerguard will be basecoated with a stainless steel spray and then given a few washes of acrylic charcoal to knock down the shine.

The grips will be clearcoated first, and while it's still wet, I'm going to sprinkle a bit of coarse sawdust on it to simulate the rather rough-looking texture of the original's grip. After that, it'll be a brown base coat, acrylic handpainted stripes to look like grain in different browns, an almost black dark brown acrylic wash, and then finally a light brown drybrushed along the ridges to look like wear. The grip screw will be handpainted gold and then given a charcoal wash.

Speaking of tape, I plan on using hockey tape applied very haphazardly on the grip. I'm using a watered-down acrylic pale brown as a base and then giving the whole grip a dark brown wash. After that, I'll use charcoal dust or something rubbed in with my fingers to really get in those cracks.

For metal weathering, I've used the same technique for 10 years: Drybrushed silver applied sparingly to edges and corners to simulate wear and tear. Also, I never add scratches any other place unless I use a Dremel or 60 grit sandpaper to make the section look like the results of a drop or bad scrape.

As for rust, I'm gonna try a new technique that I only recently read about: Volpin, in one of his Skyrim helmet builds, described applying iron powder mixed with dark purple acrylic paint to areas he wanted rust. After spraying the iron powder with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar and leaving the helmet alone for a day, he was left with beautiful rust marks. Check out the process here.

Like I said before, this is just my plan (I won't be starting the painting process for another week or so), but I'm fairly confident it will work out. I've ALWAYS hated the painting process of any of my projects, but since the blunderbuss is such a mess finishwise, even if I screw up, no one will notice :lol

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

Thanks for the info! I don't know how to do half of that...but I guess I'll have to give it a shot.

I have some UPDATES for you fine fellows!

I worked on the grip for about four hours today and I'm extremely happy with the results. The wood grip went from being probably the worst looking piece to the best, IMO.

I reshaped it and then spent about two hours bending the metal to shape to act as the triggerguard. Also painted on a few layers of Nutmeg colored paint.

IMG_0536_zps3267587a.jpg

Then I spent about ten minutes shaping the trigger itself. I drilled a few holes and secured it with wood glue.

IMG_0538_zps2603b5ba.jpg

I then wrapped the grip in hockey tape and screwed on the triggergaurd.

It's my day off, so expect a few more updates later today!

Re: Looper 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss build!

More major UPDATES!

The blunderbuss is about 90% complete!

I still have to add all the detailing and clear coat. Also have to add the screws and such to the grips. Need to fill in the "UTG" logos on the slide as well and repaint, oops.

Here it is with a coat of primer.

IMG_0540_zpse100369d.jpg

And the first coat of textured flat black. Also added the little square tabs to the front just before the front endcap.

Here it is with the grip frame plugged into the back.

Actually pretty happy with how it's turning out so far...minus the few inadequacies.

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

Dayum looks good so far. Can you play with the trigger and pump action or is it all static?

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

Very great find for the pocket watch! Also love the progress on the blunderbuss. I hope to build one myself. Also, on a different note, what is the cartoon apple for? (if you dont mind sharing) Looks really cool!

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

Thanks dudes!

Haha, the apple is just a doodle I'm drawing. He is teaching a class of various fruits and he asks, "is everyone seeded?"

And I didn't quite have the skill to make the parts moveable. I attempted it with the trigger but I couldn't find a propper spring tension that felt right to me.

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

Brilliant work! That watch is a steal, just purchased one for myself. :)
The blunderbuss looks EXTREMELY impressive! How are you going to dirty it up?

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

I have a question about the fitting on the Carhartt jacket, does it fit true to size?

Re: LOOPER 'Young Joe' Costume and Blunderbuss Build! 90% DONE!

It fits pretty true to size. My only gripe is that the sleeves are a little too wide and spacious. I'm about 5'10, 155 pounds, and a medium does the trick.
