Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Don't worry my friend, I already have that question mark reserved. Soon you'll be working on my fourth bust :)

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Can't wait to find out what it is!
This one is going fairly quickly, so I'm up for another challenge.
I've since reworked the forehead section again and I'm much happier with the shape now.
I'll take pics when I get home from work.

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Awesome work Vash, full of quality.how;s that total recall bust coming

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

I've since reworked the forehead and skull sections based on some new photos. Still a bit of work to do, but hoping to finish this soon.

OK, I think I'm at the point where I can start doing the texture work, but before I do, please let me know if you spot any thing I need to improve on.
I'm going to be working on the ears of course and the right (left in picture) brow crease and maybe the left corner of the mouth, but I need your extra sets of eyes to spot anything else.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Based on those photos, in the sculpt it does look like the line/skin wrinkle that goes down and curves off of his right side of the nose is a little too extreme, like perhaps it is a little too close to the lips. Did that make sense?
Also, it seems that the sculpt it looks like his nose may point left a little more than it should. I know JD's nose is slightly crooked, but from these reference photos it seems a tad too much.
HOWEVER, I'm assuming the discrepancies I spot are more to do with the photos not being perfectly lined up with each other, and the lack of facial hair on the sculpt. It's probably perfect.

I couldn't quite understand what you mean here. Is it the crease on the nose, the crease of the cheeks or the crease by the mouth that you're referring to? I'll see what I can do to fix whatever needs to be fixed.
Oh, and which picture should I be looking at?
Thanks for taking the time to critique, I really appreciate it.

As far as the nose goes (hey that rhymes!) I had a ton of reference pics that shows the same bend, plus the commissioner of the piece sent me a lifecast that has the same bend/crookedness on his nose. It's times like this that I wish I have seen the actor in person, would make things a lot easier, but I have to base things on pictures.

I meant this part:
depp-1.jpg

In the photo, it seems like that line is just slightly too extreme--that it reaches down toward the lip a tiny bit too much. Like measurements in the 1-2 millimeter range.
The white box with the blue lines illustrates an approximation of what the difference looks like to me. The first is what the photo looks like, and the second the sculpt.
My lines-illustration is exaggerated a bit to clarify what I mean.

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

(I hope that makes more sense than it did sans photo!)

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

It's looking great so far. Depp has been captured which isn't always the case.

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Can you light your sculpt similar to how the poster shot was lit? It makes it hard to tell without the same shadows. I would love for this to be as perfect as possible because I really want one!!

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

hey Vash,

This is coming along amazingly well. Maybe your best yet.

I'm no artist and feel really unqualified to offer any critique, but you're always so willing to take advice.

A thing that kinda popped out at me were his eyes. The ones in your bust look great but in the pic the bottom of his eyes have a little more bend to them, probably due to his smirky expression. In other words it's not your normal rounded bottom. I'm not sure that makes any sense at all. :lol

Also, it looks like that maybe his eyes on your bust have a tad too much "baggy" to them underneath?

Again, a great work of art...I wish I had that kinda mad skill!

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Thanks Brad!
Made a couple of those changes, but may need to do a bit more, let me know.
I appreciate the critique and as long as you have eyes you are definitely qualified :D
I'll try to make the eyes a bit more intense and I did take some of the bags off.
I don't have any studio lighting, but I'll try to take a pic with similar lighting.

Re: Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow Bust WIP

Based on the side by side comparison shot you are already there.
If any tweaking is needed it would be very minor.

I would actually love to see the bust completed as Johnny rather than Sparrow.
Outstanding work!:love
