One of the truly cool things about building props out of fairly accurate materials is how metals and woods age and change with handling. I was messing around with the compass earlier this week and just had to take some snaps of it on my At Worlds End map. The brass has started to patina beautifully and the timber has a lovely finish from handling and fiddling with it.

Hello, a bit late to the party. Ive made my own Jack compass, but its 3D printed so the feel is a bit off…I for sure want to make a new one out of wood soon. My gripe with mine is that one, the dome is too tall, and two, I'm not completely sure…but im fairly certain the whole compass is a bit too large. If you dont mind, what are the dimensions of your compass? Thank you.

Great question! My compass is 74x74mm length by width, and 45mm tall overall

So, after several years of admiring this prop, I figured it was time to make a display base for it. I used a 3d file from Thingiverse and modded it to my liking to make a stone/rock look base. I modeled a little indent for a cursed Aztec gold piece and ran it off on my printer in PLA. A little filling, some grey paint passes and some glued on sand

Awesome! Would you mind sharing the STL?

Thank you! That would make sense why it feels large. Mine is about 85x85mm length by width. Also, about how tall is the dome?
The dome of my compass is about 12mm tall. I won't be sharing the file for the base as its not my original file to share
