JayCVenlo's - Iron man Mark 43 Avengers 2 - Sintra and Fibreglass Build

Sintra makes a lot of sense for the MK42/43. There are so many layers to the suit sintra seems to translate really well. I did a very quick free sintra MKIII back in 2010 for an RPF member doing a charity event. I hadn't used sintra since then for IM and when I saw your post I though, " Oh yeah, why are we not all using sintra?" Your's is a fantastic build.

Update:
abs and shoulders ready for primer and paint. Finally. The abs were killing!

So is all this smoothness with paint simply the sintra?
or do you use some form of smoothing agent? fiberglass? bondo?

I wish it was that easy... no my friend:
1. Sintra build
2. Fibreglass the inside for strenght
3. Bondo (fibrebondo)
4. Sand
5. Soft Bondo
6. Sand
7. Filler spray (yellow green stuff)
8. Wet sand, grid 240 & 600
9 Primer
10. Wet Sand grid 1000
11Primer
12.Wet Sand grid 1500
13. Paint!!

yeesh!
sounds like fun though. is sintra expensive? I assume it is

I pretty much in awe of this. I've been working on a sintra MK42/43 for about a week now and it's the hardest flippin pep medium I've ever built with. It's rewarding but I'm learning that finding the overall shape of a part to be very difficult since sintra doesn't have the bend or give that a foam or paper section does. Sintra builds are not easy at all. JayCVenlo has some talent. With paper, the parts will form the overall contour as you connect the individual pieces together. With sintra each individual part is ridged and I'm having to heat it to find the flex to fit the parts together and the overall contour suffers. The exact shape of the part is inferred a bit. I almost started building a paper pep 42 along side this build so I can verify I'm getting the shape exactly correct. Many more technical challenges dealing with sintra but it seems to be the pep medium that has the quickness of foam (well quicker than the paper unfolds) and the potential crispness of the fiberglass paper pep builds. Best of both worlds but it's not easy at all.

Update: some more parts painted! Still need to do the chrome. And gold on the abs. Further i mounted the hinges. Works pretty well.
i also soldered the lightning system for the eyes.

Wow, this surprise me a litte.
What thickness did you use? i only use 2 mm. any thicker will be near impossible to cut or bend yes.
Some Tips:
1. Figure out the plate bending direction. Its like cardboard, it bends easyier in one direction than it does in another.
2. you need to make a small incision on the top and with a blunt knife make that same line on the inside (or the other way around, depending the bending direction)
Those tiny lines are really easy to fill or sand away afterwards.
3. to know where to cut look at the grid in pepakura. you'll get a good view on it.
You can maybe see it in the black and white picture in my first post.

Thanks! I think my biggest mistake was starting with the abs. I'm going to put them on hold and move on to the chest. The abs have too many parts that make the whole and the overall shape is getting hard for me to find. Once I get the hang of it I will move back to the abs. My sintra is also too think. The thinnest I could find locally is 1/8th inch which is 3.175mm. It's the material I have now so I'm just going with it. It's a learning experience for sure but I am starting to see some progress which gives me the energy to keep with it.

Got some fun work done! Installed the led eyes with magnetic switch. Also painted most of the shoulder and abs parts. Wasnt able to finish the chrome because i ran out of alclad.
here is the result till now:

Neat. Did you use the Mk.42 pepakura? And if so, could you tell me where you found it? Brilliant work on the painting, by the way. The colours all look extremely solid.
