Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

@Made007: Thanks mate, and just keep pushing through and it will get done eventually :) It's worth it in the end.

@Spitfire35: Thanks buddy, it was a good test of how the suit looked and made the hard work and stress to finish in time worthwhile :D

@Han Polo: The con was awesome fun! Second one of this particular con that we've been to. Last year was the year I proposed to my fiancee during the comp, so it's funny how many people remembered who we were lol.

Mate, fantastic work. I bloody loved it! :D

Was fun getting photos with ya and yeah, I think we were stuck on that spot for over half an hour! :p

Well done again!

So, I gotta ask... NOW WHAT? Carry this through for Halloween, build something new, take a break?

Well...I need a break for a start lol, then I'll be fixing up a few things on the Patriot so that I can hopefully (depending on my work schedule) wear it to the IM3 premier in April. After that I'm not sure. I have a few ideas that I'm tossing around to be honest but nothing set in concrete yet. Next con is Avcon in July, so I have plenty of time to work on something new before then :D.

Nice work man. it cam out great.

I am having some issues with painting my foam, i know you were as well when pulling off the tape. Has anyone ever tried pre-painting some of the pieces before gluing them? you would have to be extra careful when gluing, but i wonder if it would make it easier to paint the smaller detail pieces like that.

What did you use to seal your foam. mine is not smooth at all, it even make some bubbles in my paint after it dried, its not a big deal, i wanted the armor to look used and damaged anyway but i was wondering how you got yours to come out so smooth looking?

Thanks mate :)

I haven't heard of anyone painting prior to assembly, but this place is all about innovation and trying new things, so there is nothing to say you couldnt' be the first :)

As for sealing the foam, I used two coats of straight PVA glue, and then one coat of the aerosolised automotive body deadener. I tried to give that at least 24hrs to dry and adhere to the surface properly, then I put on a coat of adhesion promoter, let that dry, then put on a coat of plastic filler primer which I could have sanded (but didn't). After the primer was the silver base coat, and then I put the blue and red over the top of the silver. I tried to give it 24hrs between the silver and masking off any areas for blue/red to minimise how much paint got pulled off etc, but it didn't have a HUGE impact I don't think.

so many coats lol.

PVA
PVA
Body Deadener
Adhesion Promoter
Plastic Filler/Primer
Base Coat
Colour Coat

I had issues with tape pulling paint off too, i put the tape on my clothes first to remove some of the adhesive.

Lol yeah it was a fair ammount. The PVA coats dried after about 45 mins each, so they didn't take too long to do, I gave the deadener around 24hrs like I said, but the Adhesion Promoter only needed around 15 mins before I chucked on the Primer. And because I used the silver as the base coat, I didn't have to respray the silver accent pieces, I just taped them off prior to the blue and red layers :).

The worst of the stressed areas are rubbed right back to the foam, but that is due to the fact that the shin sat right on top of the boot. The main stress areas for bending etc have just cracked the paint. I'll try and remember to get some pics tonight when I get home from work and stick a couple up :).

This is too cool! One of the few suits ive seen that is finished and one of the very few ive seen that finished and painted :) Great job it looks super awesome!

Thanks Jackie! Again I need to thankyou for your files because without them I wouldn't have even attempted this build. They were very easy to build for the most part but still have enough detail to be able to finish them off nicely. To be honest I'm just glad I got it finished in time for it's debut :D Now I just need to fix up a few things and work on some manuevarability issues I had lol.

Ok so here are the pics of the damage after the con. It isn't everything, but it's a cross section of what happened.

As you can see the worst of the damage happened around the places where pieces rubbed against each other, like the base of the shin on to the top of the boot. Other than that it was just some cracking of the paint work in compressed areas. All in all I think it actually held up fairly well :D
