Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build - COMPLETE!

Hi all,

So I've begun working on an Iron Patriot build using Jackieisrockin's files from this thread:

I'm working predominantly with 10mm EVA foam, although I will use thinner foam for detail parts and/or certain full parts like the neck which require a bit more movement.

I worked with rondo as a coating method on my stepdaughter's MkVII armour but found that, while it gave a nice surface finish, it was messy, toxic and at times difficult to work with. As products like Plastidip etc are not very common down our way (Australia) and hence more expensive to be able to get a hold of, I am toying with some other coating methods which I will document later. As of yet I have not made a solid decision.

I'm *hoping* to have this finished by the 16th/17th of March for the next convention down our way, but if not then hopefully by the Ironman 3 Premier . Still haven't settled on whether I am going to do the original or Patriot colour scheme yet either...

Looks like a great start so far! Very clean. As for the color scheme... I say definitely go with the Iron Patriot!

Thanks guys I appreciate the support. I finished up one bicep this afternoon and hope to knock the second one off tomorrow and then start on the elbow/forearms towards the end of the week. I think I may need to either add some padding to the inside or mod the biceps slightly though as, at the same scale as I made all the other pieces and which is the right length between my shoulder and elbow, it seems to require biceps the size of my neck to fill them out I'm a decent size but I'm not Arnold Schwarzenegger!

I'm glad I'm not the only one lol!

As for the coating options, I've been toying with a couple of ideas lately and done a few tests. I found an aerosol flexible rubberised plumbing sealent at my local hardware store, as well as an aerosol flexible rubberised automotive undercoating that is used for sound dampening etc in auto body work (Pic 1). I also picked up some automotive grade filler primer and adhesion promoter as well.

After two layers of straight PVA glue (What I tend to use for initial sealing) to both pieces, I layed down two layers of each of the possible coatings and let it dry (Pic 2).

Both of the coatings allowed for the foam to be bent all the way around on itself without any cracking or causing any marks that weren't already present to appear and also allowed for the foam to be depressed with a thumb and, given time, sprung back to it's initial form without incident (Pic 3, 4, 5 & 6). The automotive body deadener gave quite a decent coating and was reletively flat, however the plumbing sealent left a pock marked appearance unfortunately.

After two layers of filler primer and some light sanding, I gave each piece a coat of adhesion promoter, two coats of some left over metallic automotive red from the MKVII build, and some automotive clear coat (Pic 7).

After initial drying both pieces still allowed for complete bending on themselves without any apparent adverse effects and had similar reactions to the depression test as before painting (Pic 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12), however when bent in on themselves it left noticeable creasing (Pic 13 & 14), although this was expected.

All in all I'm thinking that the automotive deadener might be a very good coating. The only imperfections were those caused by the aerosol spraying, and as there is a brush on variant available I think I will pick up a litre of that and give it a shot on some small pieces to see what effect I can get.

I've noticed since I've let it dry that with increased depression pressure the paint will crack, however that is the same as with normal foam anyway as it's the paint cracking as opposed to the under coat. I'm going to see if I can find some flexible paint options possibly.

Indeed, the deadener looks smoother, I'd go with that if I were you.
I never could achieve the smooth finish I wanted while keeping the flexibility. Not with PVA nor plasti dip ... Good luck ! I'm going for 2 part epoxy coating, Quovadis' method, this time around. Not flexible anymore, but hopefully smooth ! And sandable if needed.

No not yet, but I PMed him some time ago, for some tips, and basically he does 1 coat of fiberglass inside (or more I'm not sure), and outside 3 coats of sprayed 2 part epoxy, then sand, then again 1 coat and sand and a fith one, sand and that's it, if memory serves.
This is my plan, with some bondo touch ups after the 3 first coats.

My mind wandered while holding one glue joint on my first bicep and when I looked down my first thought was of shock that this thigh piece looked a bit small...

Lol, I can understand that all too well. My mind often wanders off, that is why I tend to watch movies/television eps while I do my pep work.

So, unfortunately life got in the way last night after work, so I wasn't able to finish up the second bicep, however I'm hoping to get it done tonight so that I can show off my "Iron guns"

I've had a great deal of success with slush resin on the inside then layer pva glue on the outside, still a bit flexible but doesn't crease and has great gloss finish.

I shall try and chase up some pics for you

Thanks man, all info is appreciated .

So I finished up my 'guns' last night. So I present two biceps and one and a half elbows lol. Going to have to heatform them all a bit to get the right shape as with the seams the way they are, the biceps don't sit in that 'rounded rectangle' shape they're supposed to be, and the elbows don't curve all the way around. However once I've got them all fixed together with the forearms it will hold everything in place.

Hoping to put the second elbow together tonight and possibly start on the forearms But seeing as it's Valentine's Day my other half may have something to say about that
