Indiana Jones 5 officially announced

I cannot figure out why they thought it was a great idea to release Haunted Mansion in July. This would have done so much better if they released it around Halloween.
I'll guess it's one of those "planned long ago but will stand no chance at the box office" Summer releases that their betting will do better a few months later with on-demand, D+ or BluRay - during spooky season.

I still thinks it’s beyond hilarious that Tim was an animator, and they ended his contract with him because they felt he wasn’t a good fit.
I absolutely love stories like this! :)

I have been lucky in the movie going experience as of late. My kids still enjoy it and we have a nice, real Imax close by. We have caught a lot of shows this year: Violent Night(December but…), John Wick 4,Guardians 3, Spiderverse, Indy 5, MI:7 and Barbenheimer last weekend. The key IMO is to go on the opening night (we go on Thursday night) with like minded fans who are excited and went out of their way to be there . Doesn’t seem to be any of the regular phones or talking issues.

Now my oldest kid geeks out on tech and retro tech so when Oppenheimer was announced in Solo4114 ’s 16:4503 anamorphicatronicstereophinic quadravision at 409 FPS….LOL I mean 15perf/70mm Imax FILM, we had to go find a place to see it on a film projector. Everything has been digital for so long he had the BIGGEST smile on his face when the projector started clicking. It was a fun just-the-boys road trip and we made a day of it.

Like most we can have a good viewing experience at home but there is still something about going to the movies that I love.

Just finished it. I LOVED it, everything about it. It was a great send off, great bookend. Loved the cameos. Not over the top. Grounded in emotion and reality.

I am so relieved.
I totally agree! I can't believe it did so bad at the BO. Like someone said earlier, I think the average movie goer simply didn't care for it. It has always been the way of the studios to make all movies so that you don't need any previous reference to another movie to enjoy it. For example, you have never seen ANY Star Trek. Suddenly you have the need to go see one and see what all the fuss is about. So you go see Wrath of Khan. It's intended that as a "stand alone" you should still enjoy it and not feel that you're missing something. I think that may be the problem with DoD. If you're not familiar with Indy's exploits, this one might have been lost on you and you might have found it a bit lackluster. But with us die hard Indy fans, we loved it. We might even have been the reason the film made as much as it did.

so was Indy no longer active duty at the the start of DoD? (Set in 1944)
In the MARVEL comics adaptation, which was based on the script, he made a comment about "serving his time" when Marcus told him Army Intelligence was there to see him. That took place in 1936.

I assumed he was active during WWII from his conversation in KOTCS. The OSS didn't exist until WWII.

Yeah. I dont know why Disney is still trying to make their rides/attractions into movies a thing.

Pirates of the Caribbean was just objectively a good fun movie that happened to have the same name as the ride. There really is no relation between the first movie and the ride, no overt references. Hell, they redesigned the ride to add Sparrow because the movie was a hit.

Disney ride to movie adaptations have a terrible track record (Old country bears, Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland, both Haunted mansions, tower of terror, Mars).

I dont think horror for kids itself is a bad idea. I enjoyed Goosebumps as a kid and I still remember the Haunted Mask episode (that was a good scare). Making it family friendly and funny is wrong though and not releasing it on Halloween is just leaving money on the table, especially since it would theoretically compete with their own Indy Jones for viewers (based on the assumption that Indy was a huge hit and had legs which it didnt).

The more I've thought about it, the more I think I agree with releasing Haunted Mansion now, as opposed to closer to Halloween.

It wasn't until HeartBlade mentioned PotC that I thought about it, but NOW is when most families will be on vacation & more likely to visit Disney. If it's released now, any recent visits to the parks & to the ride will be fresh in minds & possibly factor into seeing the movie as a family.

I thought of it just because my family was at WDW the week PotC was released, & my son really wanted to go to Downtown Disney & catch it. We'd been on the ride the day before & TBH, I had ZERO interest. Turned out to be in my top 3 films of my life.

I also think that Disney will continue to go full force with NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS as their go to Halloween film because merch wise, that thing is evergreen.

...Mostly I think this highlights that audiences are looking for a change of pace, and not just more of the same. Period. They get excited for something different. Sure, they'll go see some mega Marvel movie or whatever, but I think they just aren't as special as they once were. They aren't bad. They're still entertaining. But the ones released so far haven't felt special or exciting. There's no sense of anticipation. Audience engagement with the material itself seems...I dunno...passive? Like, nobody's sitting around speculating about what Kang's gonna do. Nobody's excited about how they're gonna adapt some known storyline from the comic. There's been no real "OH S***!!!" moment in any of the minimal ongoing stories that makes you think "It's all gonna kick off now!" There's no sense of rising action, just kinda treading water in yet another Marvel story...

I agree with this. After Iron Man (2008) Marvel Studios appeared to have believed they found their "recipe", and, except for swapping titles, characters, and overly done plot lines, they just made the same movie over and over and over. I went with a friend to see Ant Man back in 2015, and ten minutes into that movie I thought, "Wait a minute. I've seen this movie before." I hadn't, of course, but I recognized Marvel's formula and realized what they were doing. Between that and their patented "90 minute CGI battle" scenes, I now find their movies rather boring because I know what's coming next. No anticipation, no surprises, just "treading water" waiting for them to get around to the next scenes.

Sorry, this is so off-topic but...is Jack Sparrow still a part of the POC ride or was he removed after the drama with Depp's ex? I haven't been to Disneyland in ages (never been to Disneyworld).

Sorry, this is so off-topic but...

Dude…no apologies needed. At this point, 60% of this thread is off-topic.

Around page 145 it veered off from discussing Dial D For Destiny into broad and rambling treatise regarding Disney’s past, present, and future, movie theaters and why they are failing, Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible, the career of Tom Cruise, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, what can be found on Sunday afternoons on TCM, Hollywood as a whole, Hollywood and current culture, Kool-Aid vs. Tang, AI and the fall of mankind, etc:

The point is, I think this thread is just a “free for all” with no need to adhere to the title of the thread.
