It was just a money thing. They intended to shoot all the ships properly, but they had a lot of problems producing final composites of acceptable standard. Lucas approached Fox for another $6 million to complete the effects photography, but they only let him have $3 million, so a lot of compromises had to be made, such as using footage in the finished movie that had really only been intended as test shots.

You were watching one of the altered editions that featured CG X-Wing Red 2.

If you watch again and do a frame by frame you'll notice this CG ship was used to polish most of the scenes in the end battle. For example here is the "Luke pull up!" scene.

Watch this one scene in both the original unedited version then this special edition version. BIG difference.

They edited the original x-wing footage in the non edited version in odd ways too.

Here we can see 2 Red 5's (front and back) and a Red Leader in the middle.

The ships in the exterior scenes seldom match those they portray.

You can clearly see that red 5 is superimposed in front of red leader in the the front,and the rear!

So, how out of the question would it be for someone to start a thread with nothing but reference pics of the studio models that are public domain or belong to those who are willing to share? This would help from having to search thru old threads of countless pages. An "X-Wing Reference" thread type deal. No text except to identify the images, the owner, etc. Again, this would be for pictures that are already out there with permission. Would save a lot of time building if they were all together in one place. Just an idea folks.

Back on task - WHERE ARE REDS 1, 2, AND 3 TODAY?

Either making the rounds in world tours,or archived once again. I read in an earlier post that Lucas has pulled the plug on Skywalker ranch tours as well as,archive tours. In other words,I'm wondering as I'm sure everyone else is too! It'd be nice to know(of course).:rolleyes
