Jerry shes had a damn good rub down already, ill tell ya that gloss white is hard to shift when cured lol.
The effect it had was great, its nice and patchy and very used, im going to emphasise this too with sporadic mists of dullcote here and there (an idea Bob gave me, thanks Bob :thumbsup )
Most of the chip marks are painted on with various methods, hacking into the hard paint was something i didnt want to do really, so some chips are done by masking off a small square, applying latex mask, and shooting with the airbrush. This method works great and takes away the look of it being handbrushed.
Rob thanks for the kind words, like i said, a long way to go, but i want a real hero prop feel to this build, and so far, to my eye, its going my way.

Sorry mate.
I didnt know you had already done it or was waiting til you got the painting done first then use the steel wool, my bad.

Nah i know that way of doing it would blur all the colors into each other and make a bit of a mess.
Worked on the nose today and the myriad of chipping along the right hand side, what did work well for this was chipping into masking tape with an exacto and applying the tape.
Then airbrushing through the chips in the tape gives a great effect and they look more like chips, rather than blobs lol.

A few more WIP shots, some of her has to be idealised but your thoughts, also still tweaking here and there.

Another technique you can try for the chipping involves masking tape. Take a piece of masking tape and wad it up into a little ball. I use the regular masking tape as the whole point of this is to lift up some paint. Lo-tack stuff won't work as well. With the black undercoat fully cured, spray a section of the ship with whatever you main color is. After it has had some time to dry (but not harden), stipple the masking tape over the color coat and it should lift off small little flakes. I obviously suggest practice on a scrap kit first. The main point of this (or any other technique is to become familiar and comfortable with it. I've used this on aircraft models as well as the CC X-wing I have. There are photos of it in the Sculpting a Galaxy booksigning thread elsewhere in this section of the RPF.

That actually sounds real good Gene, im not the greatest painter but i always try to pull off a new technique every model or so.
I will give that a try at some point, always learning in this hobby.
Ill try take a look at your X wing in that thread, i think i did see it a while back, but a jog on memory i need.
Stormy, the black flake effect is done two ways, the first is to mask off a section, and blot latex mask liberally, be sure to get all around the edges or you will get an overspray square lol, then shoot your color of chip or flake over.
The other method i used, was take a strip of tape, i used Tamiya, then scratch punch and carve your holes into the tape, Mark them for placement if needed.
Apply the tape to the model, and shoot the paint through, the irregular holes then look more chipped, than painted on blobs, just my preference.

You got me pulling out my books wth ref ics to compare. Awesome job.

Its interesting to note the recent X-Wing paint jobs of late are all being done component by component...

It's almost as if we're all treating these as sub-models.... even going panel-by-panel.

I can tell you that for me it gives easier access to do it this way. I can't wait to see Lee here pull this all together. :thumbsup

Hopefully I'll joining the fray before too much longer, as I've picked up the FX toy conversion project I'd set aside for awhile...

LOL rob what ref there is of Red Leader huh, not a lot, but one strives. I saw you dug out the old FX, cant wait to see that work out for you,its a lot of work, but hell, i think its gonna be something very special, especially to see you paint it.

Started the engine cans, its tricky as they seem to clean on Red Leader, so i embelished just a little.
These are the top cans, the lowers will have to be totally idealised. Added the red cellophane inside the heatsinks too.

Got the wings together and began painting, still to be tweaked here and there, the grey on the nacelles ill be misting out a little, but it contains enough blue in the tone to match the pics i have.

Again, that is gloss white auto paint on there, rubbed to hell with steel wool, ive got the headache and blurred vision to prove it ( i gotta use that mask more man, scared myself earlier today)

ralphee,

Excellent work. Can't wait to see the finished product. Thank you for sharing I always watch your threads with great interest.

If I have missed it I apologies, but what are you using for your swivel mount? It looks like it would make life easier when building these larger studio scale models. Do you have any words of wisdon on how to use them?

Thanks.

Alan

Aww shucks im blushing :lol Wizard, the mount is from Panavise, its a CCTV mount, REL and Imaginager put me onto them (thanks you sirs) and they rule.
So i hear there sales are going up to guys like us lol. Anyways, i thank you guys for the comments, i guess some folk are not too cool to post on this board after all :lol Well either that or my work really is @#$%.e :lol
Im hoping this coming weekend ill have some juicier progress and piccys to show.

lee

Thanks for the info. I found them online for $9 + Tax, shipping was included. Hopefully tha twas a good price. The ones I have comming are adjustable in 2" segments up tp 6".

This may get me motivated to start build this collection that I have.

Alan

Price sounds good buddy, mine were 6" and i got hold of the 3" extensions just in case.
They do a rather funky telescopic, but there pretty hard to get here in the UK.
I look forward to the builds to be mounted on them :)
