Thanks imurme! I think one of my favorite parts about making star wars models is analyzing the reference and trying to figure out what techniques ILM used and then trying to recreate it. This fascinates me! For example it was a revelation to me when I figured out that many of the streaks on the 32 inch Falcon were done by laying down a single piece of tape and lightly hitting it along the edge with an airbrush with black or gray paint then accentuating it with an art pen or whatever your method is.

Yeah they definitely look just drawn on:

Almost done painting. Does anyone know how to go about doing the paint flecking technique with a toothbrush? How diluted the paint should be? I've never tried it with any other Falcons and am a bit nervous.

Nice work!

A scenic artist I work with has this little metal pipe use for detailed spatter. It's very cool. You just blow in it and the spatter comes out perfectly.

Not sure what it's called

I've used toothbrush technique for snow scenes on acrylic paintings and it's fine for that as the drops are randomly sized and varied, I would be too scared to use this technique on a model as I feel it's too uncontrollable.
the fact that ILM had airbrush , the other technique of a brush loaded with paint held vertically and using the airbrush to blow through it might be more controllable , I need to try this myself yet but I've seen online use of this method.

Can you expound on this technique a little more? Do you remember where you saw it online?

No need to experiment on your masterpiece - just make yourself a paint-pig (old model or scrap plastic, painted with same paints as your MF) and test it! Then you can report your findings back here... a much more satisfying process, mate.

Basically you take a toothbrush and dip it into the paint you want to use and shake off any excess... then hold the toothbrush about 6-8 inches from the surface of the model and run your thumb across the bristles. It will splatter paint on the surface and give it little spots. I suggest using either a shade darker or a shade lighter then your base color. To the camera you don't actually see them... but to the eye it gives it all kids of new detail that hits you on the subconscience level. Its really easy bro... give it a try.

Sorry should have been more specific. I was referring to the airbrush technique Vacformedhero hero was talking about.

Mighty kind words. Thanks! These cell phone pics don't do it justice. I'll take some glamor shots with my good camera when I finish the stand.

You wanna start making some good side money accept some commissions, because Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was more idealistic in my youth, or stupid. Either way I really wish I was more concerned with making money when I was young. Sad but true. I really wish I was rich. One reason is so I could be lazy, set aside my own Falcon and buy this one off you.

Amazing.:D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup
