Harry Potter Props and costumes

OMG! I almost wet my pants....Philip, you are THE MAN! Those are perfect....EXACTLY what I needed! (y)thumbsup I can already see I'll be revising the wand's profile....

Quick quick question for ya, if it's OK: What is the overall length of your wand? I've scaled mine out in AutoCad to 13.5 inches, with a 4 inch handle (from the butt to the ferule where the shaft comes out), a shaft diameter of 3/8", and a handle diameter of 3/4" (across the 3 bands)...am I in the ballpark?

just got my first noble wand...It's a harry version and I got one of the plain looking versions that are becoming more and more common. The handle looks great but the actual wand part is very plain with almost no detail painted on it. There is a lot of detail cast into it but no where near enough color to emphasize it. I used some flat black paint and a some steel wool to bring out the wood grain look. I only have after pics and didnt take any before pics......sorry.

That's a beautiful piece, Vegeta. :thumbsup
I'm building a Snape costume for Halloween, so I want to replicate the wand for that purpose. The Noble offerings are really nice, but I've heard opinions that they are not drop-proof, and the resin is prone to snapping....I wanted something a bit more sturdy for handling in crowds and such, so I thought I'd try my hand at it....if I fail, the Noble Snape wand only costs about 40 bucks, and I'll pick one up for Halloween.

Thats understandable for sure....I wish there was an option to buy a wooden version for more money...I'd spend the extra money for it. There are a lot of great places that make wooden wands but they aren't accurate to the new movies.

I agree. I'm also thinking about building this wand with a removable shaft, so if it gets broken, I can swap the handle onto another one....

HOLY CRAP!! Thats funny you mention that....I was gonna do the same exact thing if my wand ever breaks!!! The handle is the hard part..I can make the rest on a wood lathe:thumbsup

Same here! I'm thinking about using a hidden set-screw system for securing it in the handle. I'll be using a lathe to turn the shafts, and rough-forming the handle prior to detail work. I plan on using an ebony stain of some type; I'm toying with making it hollow, so I can add the "mystery core" material, just for authenticity!

Thats a really goos idea! If I ever go that rout I'll use a system that will allow me to change the shaft quickly...good idea my friend!

No problem...happy to share. :)

I will admit, though...after studying those great handle pics that Philip was kind enough to post, I must say that there is quite a lot of detail in those carvings, and it's repeated 3 more times for the whole handle....hmm....that's a LOT of carving with a Dremel! :eek

I'm now thinking along the lines of making only a single carved section, then pulling a mold off of it and pouring them in 4 pieces of resin, and mount them on a 'specially prepared' wooden handle that has been sectioned to receive them...

Whattaya guys think?

A little quick AutoCad work, and here's my take on the handle, based on the pics...

Keep in mind that this image doesn't allow for the "wrap" around the handle; I will add shaded areas of relief to the next drawing. I'm also considering sculpting this out of clay, instead of wood carving; I think I can get better detail...

More to come...

slughorn, narcissa and greyback wands - by Noble are coming soon!:eek
plus crystal goblet set and dumbledore knife from the cave!

not sure if they count as props but in the 2baldies fx workshop there are some foam latex pieces from the make up shop on azakaban . not sure of his name but its the character that shows harry potter to his room in the leaky cauldron just after he gets off the bus. also there is a set of test teeth from the unused proffessor lupine animatronic werewolf. my fx partner Daz did all the acrylic tests for nick dudman on azakaban.

Am I crazy?

I've wanted to recreate the Black family tree for some time now.

The problem has always been lack of reference material. I have gathered enough to make a decent start, but if anyone has better reference pics and is willing to share (privately if you like), I'll gladly reward them with a free print. That is, if the reference is better than what I already have.

There are interesting little inconsistencies in what we see in the film. The biggest is that Bellatrix is not included on the full-size tapestry. In fact, you can see the spot on the pic above. The dark blotch right off Harry's shoulder (to the right) is her sister Andromeda. Bellatrix should be just to the right and down a bit from there, but she's missing.

I think there was some discussion about her portrait that wasn't finalized until after filming had begun. We see her portrait as an insert and it's much more realistic looking than any of the others. I'm sure the creators wanted her to be easily identifiable.

Anyway, I'm starting this. Not sure if I'll be able to finish it. It should look sweet on canvas. But how big to make it? The original covered three walls of the set. Not very reasonable. Maybe quarter size?
