Harry Potter Coins Sizes??

I'm going to try my hand at replicating some Gringotts coins for my ever-expanding Potter collection.

I have searched the internet for around half an hour and I cannot find any information for the diameter or thickness of either the galleons, sickles or knuts. So I'm hoping that someone with the Noble Collection could very kindly post the measurements needed.

The galleons look to be about an old thaler/Crown/Dollar size, around 40 mm across and 2 mm thick. Just a hunch though; I haven't seen anything to use as a proper yardstick.

Honestly, I'm not even sure how I'll be replcating the coins. I was thinking of making a model and having them 3D printed, then make a mould from the 3D printed master and casting as many coins as I need.

I was curious because I've been thinking about trying to make some coins of my own but I also am unsure how to approach it.

Pewter has a low smelting point, you'll be able to do the whole process in your kitchen. The problem is finding a way to give it a coat that has that lush gold tone. This is why I prefer to stick to silver coins, because polished pewter and other pot metals look (a bit) like worn silver.

The galleon is 3 cm .The sickle is just over 2.5 cm and the Knut is just under 2 cm. This is from the Noble collection coins, I need to find a better tape to get more accurate measurements.

Compared to existing coinage in the United States, The Galleon is the same diameter as the U.S. Silver Eagle; the Silver Sickle is slightly larger than the 1/2 Dollar and the Bronze Knut is slightly larger than the nickel.

That would make the galleon roughly 40mm in diameter.

However, I then found this photo using a quick Google Image search (image courtesy of Tumblr)


When I scaled this image, so that my thumb was the same size as in the image, I found that the coin was closer to 50mm in diameter.

Just some food for thought...

I don't have the inaccurate Noble coins in my collection. My coins are older and screen accurate. I bought them in 2002 when the first movie was released in theatres. They were made by Pobjoy Mint, which is the same mint that made the screen used coins. Aside from the more right dimensions, the main difference to the Noble coins is the color and material of the Knut, which is from reddish copper.

Correct dimensions:

Denomination: 1 Knut
Metal: Copper
Diameter: 25.00mm
Weight: 7.00gms


Denomination: 1 Sickle
Metal: Nickelon
Diameter: 32.00mm
Weight: 11.30gms


Denomination: 1 Galleon
Metal: Goldclad
Diameter: 38.60mm
Weight: 28.28gms
