Unlimited Run Han In Carbonite (HIC) Volvo panel set

My panels came in a couple days ago, and they look excellent. I actually wasn't even expecting them to be THAT clean.

You're truly doing God's work, Bigturc!

Damn, what can I say .. Thanks man! Very happy to know people are happy about them!

Just thought I would update.

My back snapped again last week .. I'm stuck in bed for now so I couldn't finish my current set! Andrew, terribly sorry about this!! I'm missing out the summer, it's pissing me off even more...

But I will be back on my feet soon and will update again! Good news is I'm working from home for the rest of the summer so once I can get out of the bed, I'll try to cast in the morning before starting my work day!

Update guys ..

I haven't forgotten about you .. I'm still working from bed but I can at least walk properly now. I recovered most sensility from my left foot and the strength in my leg which was the main reason I couldn't walk for almost 3 weeks. For those interested, this is due to nerve compression from the herniation on my L5-S1.

So I plan on restarting casting this week, maybe even today .. I'm gonna do smaller batch so I'm standing for shorter period of time! And if everything goes well, I'll be able to pump out sets of these again very soon!

Thanks for your patience guys .. also, please let me know, for those on the wait list, if you are still interested! Either here of by PM!

And Andrew, you're ace for waiting that long!

Still interested but in no hurry whatsoever. Take your time with mine. Seriously.

Glad to hear you are recovering and can walk properly again!

I am fourth in line according to the list on page 1 of the run. When do you need my deposit?

When I ship the one before you. I don't want to take anyone's money until I can deliver. I've had Andrew's money for over a month now and I hate that. Wanted to refund until I'm back on my feet but he refused so I made lots of interest on his $$$! :) Seriously, I hate having someone's money!

Sorry to hear about your back, Turc. Being immobilized is not fun at all.

Thought I would check back in and post a pic for those who take on this project in the future.

Went with Rustoleum metallic "Flat Chestnut" to be a little different, and turned out great. Gives a bit of contrast from all the silver, and adds a tad bit of gold/bronze:

A small tip for anybody else using these panels, there's a bit of variance in the castings on the back side (where you won't see). I made a template and cut all 8 of my aluminum sheets without realizing that, so I had to go back and modify some of them. No biggie though, just had to go back through and do some more cutting on a few of the aluminum pieces.

Look beautiful when done (this pic doesn't show the color well, but you can see how clean the cast is):

WOW!
Hell, that's the first time I'm seeing my panels done and painted!!! Beautiful work there!!!

As for the variance, what I did there is add clay to the original's back side as I realised, after a few cast and maybe after my 2nd mold, that this corner was really thin and sometime ended up in thin casting. This happens because the top part of the mold is quite top heavy even with keys between parts. Eventually, it sags a little and create thin walls in that exact section. So I much prefered giving you guys more material on the back side vs a thin wall. :D

:D After posting in this thread last night, I was like "eh, might as well post an actual build thread". You can see it here if you like: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=244937

Oh I figured that material was there to beef it up, which it does for sure. I just didn't realize the differences at first. Funny because I was super-meticulous about cutting the aluminum, then when i figured out I had to modify them, I just hacked 'em up and put them in there real quick. Haha, oh well. Not like anyone will ever see it. Just thought I'd give a heads up to anybody else working on a HIC too.

Update time!

A buddy of mine had some free time to help me out producing panels. It looks like he'll be here every other day .. so from now, panels should go out fast .. terribly fast!!

Hopefully, I will be able to get at least one set out per week. I will have b-grades too, they will be announced here. I still don't ask any money up front, don't want to be stuck in that situation, but if you're still in, be ready to PP as soon as I send you my email.

Thanks for your patience guys!

If my friend has as much time as he says, it'll take no time at all! Right now, I just want to ship Andrew's set, he's been the most patient guy!!!

I may be able to help cast in between his sessions, so we'll see about it!

Small update .. small story!

The first thing to know, is that I'm at my 7th mold for these panels, about 5-6 hours go into the making of each of them, I made one pretty much every 40 panels that I sold .. let me tell you one thing, when you make one, you want it to last as much as possible ...

Now, sometime, when you remove the cast from the mold, due to the mechanical nature of the part and all undercuts, the plastic might snap clean in some thin region. It happens, less and less .. I would say every 30 panels since I`m quite used to do this now!

When I showed my buddy how to help me, one of them snapped, so I took it out, glued it with CA glue and the break are so clean that it won't even show. Case closed! After a few casts, I didn't need to hold his hand to do the work .. he came over 3 times, each time producing 4 panels .. things were going well .. until another snapped. He took the initiative to glue it ......... IN THE MOLD!!!

Let me tell you, when he told me has was done and he had glued the last one in .. I asked .. what do you mean 'in' .. PANIC!!! Yep .. Glued it directly in the mold, cast stuck to rubber, rubber tore .. oh .. and of course, that's in my A-grade mold... NOT HAPPY!

This is what my mold looked like (the other corner)

When you pour ca glue in a rubber mold :facepalm

Beside that corner, those panels still come out super sharp. I need to figure what I'm gonna do now!

More to come!
