NEW BOOT PROTOTYPE UPDATE:

When I did my test run with this outfit during the Reach launch, one of the biggest problems I had was with my boots. They were uncomfortable and unwieldy and were little more than a pair of covers that tied over the top of a pair of work boots. This will not do.

Yesterday I decided that my plain clay sculpts of the boots on top of my machine-carved soles were not going well. You can see them in the lower left corner of this pic:

Insteady I got back to work on my hodge podge frankenboots. They're made using a foam cast of the soles from my old failed molds, resin casts of the heel cup, a section of corrugated hose, and oil-based clay to hand sculpt the sections I couldn't cast. I managed to get into full tunnel vision mode, so I didn't realize I hadn't eaten anything all day (or night) until I stopped at about 3:00am. At that point, they looked like so:

This morning I sprayed the "armored" parts with some rustoleum hammered effect paint to hide any fingerprints and minor flaws. Then I turned them over and misted the soles with a bit of nonskid truck bed coating to add a bit more texture there:

These boots are optimized to fit around a size 10 shoe. I'll be taking a cheap slip-on boot of some kind, inserting it into the mold, and then casting foam around it. So for smaller sizes they'll just have more foam. For larger sizes, I'll make a rigid foam cast once the mold is done and add a bit of length in the middle. Then I'll make another mold of the larger size. The proportions will be a bit different, but they'll still look the part.

I will begin molding these tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Lovin the suit dude. Glad it's finally finished... well except for your wee little digits. :lol Best of luck making them comfortable. Hows the helmet BTW? Is it hot in there at all or did you install a fan along with the lights and all them other doo-dads?

Aah Halo. You'll be sorely missed in a few years. I wish I could've gone in costume to the premiere when I went. Sadly it was not to be. Anyway, I plan on doing a Carmine suit for GOW 3 Launch.

Keep it up dude! If you finish the blue suit, you could go around talking like Caboose from RvB!:lol

It's not just a blue suit that I'm making. I'm also making red, orange, cobalt blue, aqua (or teal), black, yellow, plurple, maroon, brown, and orange.

The light red helmet is not pictured.

Making one suit by Halloween=easy. Making the Red team and the Blue team and possibly a coupld more? Now that's a challenge.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

I sat and read through this entire thread today and I have got to say that you sir are awesome. The time, attention to detail, and over all patience with this build is top notch. You have done an amazing job and should be very proud of your accomplishments.

And you managed to keep your sense of humor through it all. I got a kick out of reading this.:lol Keep up the outstanding work!!!(y)thumbsup

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Today the new boot prototypes went under the rubber:

Here's how they look now:

I also decided to experiment with embedding rare earth magnets in the thighs where the weapons are supposed to click into place:

And so begins my blue suit:

Stay tuned...

...Boot mold update:

Here's the molds with the first layer of silicone:

Here's the upper mother molds built:

I decided to go with a rigid mold for the bottom of the soles (since the flexible foam can be pulled from the rigid mold) Here's the reinforced resin poured over the bottoms of the boots:

In other news, I'm making progress on the rest of the suits for Halloween. Here's the shins all in rows:
