Half-Life - Gordon Freeman - WIP

Re: Gordon Freeman

I found these on the web:

Metallic:

Plain orange:

It looks as if plain orange doesn't shine back yellow but instead white, and the HEV suit shines back yellow pretty much and looks very much like the metallic car up there.

So what do you all think? Is metallic the right one? Perhaps I should ask the guys at Valve what they intended for it, I think someone else who's working on a HEV asked them about all sorts of things.

Re: Gordon Freeman

Me and another guy at another forum have come to the conclution that the suit is most likely metallic orange, so that's what I'll paint it.

I have currently no way to create silicon molds since they don't sell that stuff anywhere around here, and shipping would probably be very costly for a big tub of it, so I have figured out a few other ways to create this, and the way I will do it is most likely to form a negative mold out of clay and apply resin in fiberglass on the inside. I don't know if this will work or if the resin will react to the clay and make a total mess, but I'll try it anyway.

Re: Gordon Freeman

Let me suggest that you sculpt the armor in cardstock. Then you can make sure that it fits you well before it is set in resin.
Then you could decide to either reinforce the cardstock, to take a negative mold for casting or a third option that I think could be possible because the costume does not have compound curves: construct it from sheets of styrene glued together with styrene glue.

You could use a negative mold in fiberglass as long as there are no undercuts and you don't skimp on vaseline.
I don't know any vendors in Norway, but in Sweden there is kinn.com for casting material. I get my styrene from peros.se, but that is mostly because I can pick it up in person from within 15 minutes from my home.

Re: Gordon Freeman

That was one of the options, yeah, and perhaps the best since I can then adjust it to the right size. Thanks a lot for the links, looks like I can get some silicone shipped to here afterall, at least I hope so.

Re: Gordon Freeman

just an FYI.. you need to remember that back in the Half Life 1 days, there werent any real time reflections or specular and normal mapping in games, so all that detail that appears to be light reflecting is actually just painted into the texture on the model.

Re: Gordon Freeman

I believe there are tons of model viewers out there for HL1, I know Source comes with one in the SDK. Have you tried finding one? That would greatly help you out I would think. It helped us a ton when we made our TF2 costumes.

Re: Gordon Freeman

@darcjedi - I get what you mean, but still it does look as if they painted the model to reflect the way that metallic paint does. It looks metallic everywhere it seems, either it's in the game or it's in a drawing, so I suppose that's not accidental.

@darthgoat - I havn't found a model viewer for it yet, but it would probably be of good help, yeah.

Re: Gordon Freeman

yeah, I know it is, i just wanted you to be aware that with the older games a lot of the detail was just painted details and not anything really interacting with light like real materials would and be able to make a better informed decision on what is what on the costume.

Personally I like the design of the HL2 suit better, it just looks like its more functionally designed than the original.

Re: Gordon Freeman

I have several times considered the idea for this costume. Just the problem of, what to use to make the suit. Than again, I have been waiting for them to make a HL movie with Gary Oldman as Gordon Freeman!

Re: Gordon Freeman

@darcjedi - The second suit looks more like it can be used as a real life costume, yeah. It seems as if they actually bothered to design it to be something that could be worn this time, as opposed to the first suit that won't let you move at all, or at least have to walk like the Coneheads do, but I'll try and make it more usable than what they designed.

@darkesword2020 - Thanks a lot for that. I just downloaded it now and havn't opened it yet, but the "Pep" name sounds like it is something I think it is that will indeed help me very much.

@Satxer - Cool, go for it then, seems there are very few of these costumes around. I will mostly be making mine out of fiberglass, resin and bondo, and will use fiberglass armored vinyl for the ribbed joint parts. I hope for a Half-Life movie to be made soon too, but I don't know about Gary Oldman though... :p

Re: Gordon Freeman

Look at Gary Oldman in TDK, he has most of the look right there. Including the glasses!

Re: Gordon Freeman

Perhaps, perhaps, but he might be a little too old for the part now I believe.

Pepakura progress took a hazardous turn for my PC equipment when the program F'd itself and I couldn't save anything because of the buy password for $38 stuff... Of course I can afford it, but..hmm...

Re: Gordon Freeman

Yeah! It's finally finished! I think it looks awesome, especially with the grey sweater.......:lol

Photos like these all over the internet are sure a great way to make me want to make a HEV that looks like it's from the game, instead of being made out of cereal boxes.

Anyway, just wanted to post some progress photos of the crowbar that I finally got to the right shape:
TemplatePhotos-001.jpg

Original, full red and not right shaped.
TemplatePhotos-006.jpg

Crowbarbeque. :love
TemplatePhotos-007.jpg

Beating the fudge out of it.
TemplatePhotos-009.jpg

Shinyfying.

Repainted, nearly done.

Must be some european laws of crowbar shapes up here to prevent people from hacking it into someone's skull.

Re: Gordon Freeman

I recently joined the 405th to do a Chief costume. I found the Freeman peps after a few days and haven't looked back at the Chief since. I've got the left arm and leg done now, will start working on the right when I get back home.

Re: Gordon Freeman

Nice. I take it this is the mark V? I'm building the mark IV, or at least will start building this. Post some photos of what you've done ;)

Re: Gordon Freeman

Left leg in the back, left arm in the front. I think in order to make it more accurate I'm going to have to fill in the depressed section on the thigh with bondo out to the first fold line inside it. As is, that section goes right through where the hinge should be. (but I'm not hinging that piece because it would be silly to hinge a piece I can slide on and off, it'll just be a deco groove.)

Re: Gordon Freeman

Ah yes, I saw the release of that Pepakura model, looks good when put together. The mark IV that I'm building is in so low-res that I have to start with everything from scratch, but will hopefully turn out good too.
