Green Lantern movie rings at Toys R Us

So my friend and I have been working on my ring for a bit following a lot of the tutorials on youtube, and screenshots here.

Issues I'm having atm, can't find a really good stone for the inside I looked everywhere at Michaels and Hobby Lobby.

Also we're looking into rigging the ring to light up or look more illuminating in general so any advice there would be greatly appresiated. We've boughten green LED's, batteries and a tiny switch but are still having some issues.

Any advice on choices for the stone, ways to make the ring look more illuminating and the abiliity to light up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

And here's my finished mod:

I haven't tried this but maybe you could use Surface Mount LEDs for illumination; they are much smaller than regular LEDs and you could proabably fit them easily in the cavity between the metal and green plastic part. They are a pain to hand solder though.

I was going to pick up one the other day until I saw how gigantor it was. That wouldn't even fit my thumb. Now if I wanted to do Salaak however.....I might have to go pick one of these up now....

It looks like they are releasing a varinat on the metal ring with the next wave of the movie masters figures.

The ring included looks like the same diecast we have available now, but has an improved cetner, with the metal ring setting some modders are already doing.

This is where I found the info: TheFwoosh.com | Your home for action figure news, discussion, and more!

And here are the pics posted there:

Actually, the "metal ring" around the center gem is already part of the sculpt, it's just that on all the rings released so far, Mattel never bothered to paint it silver. :rolleyes

4. Been Dremeling the inside of the band so it'll fit my Kilowog-sized finger. I think I'm almost there. It's been a real pain!
Did you remove metal pretty evenly from all around the inside or did you concentrate on a specific part of the inside to give you the extra room?

Great work, guys! :cool:thumbsup

Nightwing Returns, what kind of gem did you use and where did you get it? I've been thinking about modding some of my GL rings and I'm looking for a good source for gems just like you used. :cool

Ya, I'm interested too. Where did you get your gem? :confused

Gregatron, the ring was a size 11, so what size did u get it to? Just asking cause I got big fingers as well and I'm prob gonna try this!

Hey all,

I had to half make the gem. I went to Michaels and bought a bag of the small glass gems (various colours, cuz they dont make the light green by themselves). Only 5 of the green (out of like 15 0r 20 green and like 50 other colours) fit. But, they stuck out too much, so I had to sand them down so's the face would fit back on. After I sanded it down with heavy grit to the right size, I fine grit sanded it. Then, I crumpled up light green coloured tin foil and glued it to the back side with glow in the dark paint. I finally finished the ring today. I'll post better pics of it asap. It turned out really good, actually.

BTW, the glass gems are the ones like you put in a fish tank.

I cleaned all the black out of the indentions on the band with a push pin, lol. I think it looks a lot better that way.

Finally managed to get them out here in Colorado Springs, very excited. For the price, they are pretty cool! I know everyone is saying they are a size 11 but my right hand, middle finger, is a solid 11.5 - 12 and the one I purchased fits. It is a little snug but works. Now to save up for a nicer version, like one of Zenix.

I evenly thinned the whiole band out. It's not super-thin, but it now fits.
OK, I tried ^this^ & it worked great. I took some finished pix, but nothing in-progress (because frankly I thought I would end up ruining the ring; hence the 2 extras I bought).

What I did was:

  • Thinned out the inside of the band so it would fit my correct finger.
  • Narrowed the width of the band in the back so I could bend my finger freely.
  • Polished the finish off the band down to the bare metal, though I did leave the black in most of the crater-y bits (I noticed in the pix, the black background makes the band finish look reversed, but it isn't).
  • Drilled out the center, added a highly-reflective clear pearlescent (<--is that a word?) stone just behind the OEM stone to make it - - - well, more reflective.
  • Painted the inside the ring (the metal part just under the green cover & all around the stones) with glow-in-the-dark paint.
  • Added the metal ring around the stone on the front (scavenged from a ballpoint pen).
I think that's everything. Anyway, here's the result:

Pretty cool for $10. :cool:thumbsup
