More progress, finally finished the front end after countless sandings and reapplying Bondo I got it just right. I drilled my limb and tapped it so it now hold really tight with the screw pics below. From what I have seen this should be the correct screw for the bow. Don't know if the washer piece needs to go on before or after the plate and leather or if it isn't there at all. Someone please help me out...
I thought it would be cool to see all the parts I've collected so far unassembled next to the frame in progress and it looks kinda neat, so I've included that pic as well
More to come and thanks everyone for the help and watching my progress!!!
Finally got back home and made some more progress. The front grip and curve are now pretty much done. Small Bondo work still to go but not much. Carved the line into the rear stock as well, this is my favourite part so far as it looks great to me. I decided to leave the ridge even though it's not accurate. May fix it later not sure yet. Now onto the final touches and the accessories then off to paint. Let me know what you think! Also some thoughts on what might need work or fixing would be great too!!
I just did some late night scaling work and got quite a few dimensions/measurements of the bowcaster and its parts. I know I'm not as experienced as others but I tried my best to get the most accurate data so please forgive me if some of it is wrong. I am uploading the first page of my scribbles and will post a list/better sheet later. Let me know what you think!
Propmainiac, Thank you can't wait till it's done. I've seen your bow you made it looked great! Hope mine will look as good as yours. It's nice to see people following my build and watching my progress! Thanks for all the comments everyone!
Need any help or tips let me know....I will say this sanding mine smooth was a pain! I like how you thinned out the stock near the grip. I may do that on my next build
Thank you, I actually didn't really thin out the stock as much as add more Bondo to it. Since the area above the grip had that recessed arc to it I added Bondo there to get it more to a 90° angle and added more to the front and back of the grip. I then rounded the grip out so there is actually like an eighth of an inch more to it.
I hate to say it but the scopes are 4x15s that I found at a garage sale and I put cardstock and lots of electrical tape on the end to make it look like a 4x20. The only reason I bought them was one had a close mount like the model 7!
Propmainiac, I found a really easy and effective way to sand the stock if you want to use this on your next build.
I found an old piece of this cloth sandpaper that was worn down, it's like a fabric with an abrasive side to it and I held it on each side and held tension to it and sanded it like that. It gets the stock really smooth and the Bondo felt like glass afterwards. Also it doesn't take too much material off either. Maybe this could help you out with your sanding!
Here's how I did the grip, sorry I forgot to take a picture before sanding it down wish I did.
All it is, is two pieces of paper taped to the grip area and following the curve. I then added lots of Bondo to the point that it was flat and basically one large square all perfectly level with the top of the stock. After that I took off the paper and sanded it down. That's it!
Finished last minute Bondo work last night, sanded, and washed the frame down too. I got it where I wanted it at so I started the painting this morning. I'm using 3 paints with 2 coats of each and sanding in between. I just put on rust oleum filler primer for my first coats. I'm then going to sand and put primer sealer on after it dries. Pics below
Been putting the bowcaster off for a little bit and finally got back to it. Got pictures of the paint job I finished a little while ago, bow and limb now fully finished with black paint.
I've also been parts hunting a little and got a zorki 1, imperial disks, fender witch hat knob, Roland small knob, and a philmore knob which is on its way. Side plates I made this morning, they look pretty accurate. I also picked up a vom mic for the bandolier when I start that. Almost there, more pics to come!
Finally got the Kodak 35 and the flat pan head screws for the side plates. It's actually starting to look more like the bowcaster now! More work and pics to come, hopefully this thread hasn't gone dead lol!! Let me know your thoughts
Lots of photos today! The front barrel support and bracket piece are all done and ready for paint. I used a screw post for the hinge part. The scope mount is also finished and painted, still have to put a piece under the back to extend that area will post pic when that's done and mounted!
Finally I am off of school and able to get back to work on the bowcaster. I just finished making the barrel bracket system and have all the correct screws and bolts put in. The block has been made as well hard to see it in these photos will take a better one once painted. I made the back end of the trigger block and have the screw and sight piece in there, just like the prototype bowcaster looks. I also think I figured out the way the bracket sits on the bow, it looks like it just sits in a cutout area above that sight disk in the back. So hope you all like the progress and can't wait to get this thing finished! So close now
