Firefly - 1:6 scale Mal Reynolds sculpt

What is the best material to make an armature from? Metal?
[/b]

I'm pretty sure wire is used fairly often as armature...and I remember reading (possibly even in this thread) that wood, specifically, is a bad choice, even when covered by clay.

Get some fairly stiff wire(And relatively thick).
You can make a few armatures at the same time, if you intend to always work in the same scale. If you are working in 1/6, scale the armatures to a GI Joe 12" figure, and then you can alter it from there on if the figure is taller or shorter slightly(And you can also alter the pose easily).
You need strong wire, so that you should need a set of pliers to work it. This gives it strength when you have it in the desired shape.
And don't worry if you can only get short lengths of wire. If it's strong enough, you can always wrap two pieces with electrical wire, and solder it together.
After you have the wire armature done, get some cheap aluminium foil, cut it into smallish squares and(Piece by piece, in layers), wrap the armature with this. The reason for this is two-fold:
1. It helps to "cook" the Sculpey(Or equivalent) from the inside out(Because aluminium foil is such a great insulator), and:
2. It builds the armature up to almost the shape of the figure to be sculpted, and so it saves on clay.
I hope this helps.
Bar.

Helps plenty, thanks Barry. :thumbsup

Magic.
I often use leftover welding rods for my armatures.
And i also use that for the pegs i sculpt heads onto.
You can also use the foil to make the rough shape of the head. In the following image, i used the foil for the neck too(The rough shape also helps the clay to "key" to the armature):

Barry... you simply HAVE to show more of your work. :thumbsup

Fixed the boot... fortunately it didn't break at an area that required much work - one can be lucky even when unlucky. Baked both the full figure and the broken off part of the boot before putting them together and don't plan to bake it anymore, as the seam will simply grow cracks... so, I'll try and heat the area in some other way and fix any eventual cracks with filler afterwards.

This... imo... is somewhat good news to me... as I really got stumped when it happened... but now it's really a "phew" feeling that nothing worse happened... :)

Guess the original message got nuked in the move, so here goes again.

Have relaxed these few days from working on the figure... after having done the fix-up job on his right boot I needed a break. Will most likely start making the buttons tomorrow and attach them to the figure. Soon... very soon there will be new pictures of the fully finished kit - in pieces. :lol - so look forward to that... I know I am.

In the meantime, I have been thinking... very hard and thorough... and an idea popped into my brain - yes, I do have one of those - about possibly doing a companion piece for the Mal figure... and what better companion than Inara... hehe... the Companion. Mind you... this is just an idea at this stage, nothing substantial and may not go beyond that... though... it will be good training, imo... so I figured... why not.

Am already sculpting on another figure, but that can easily be used for an Inara sculpt, if I decide to do it. So... just checking... what do you guys think? Should Mal be a stand-alone figure or should he have his Companion to keep him company? :lol

(though... really had no intentions of doing more than Mal... but Inara may be intriguing to sculpt, I'd imagine, with her outfits and all)

I you're gonna do one, you gotta do em all.

Not possible... though... I wouldn't mind others making any... would definitely be interested in seeing them. Have too many ideas for other projects I would rather wanna do... but the Inara figure I had in mind would be sort of a "Get Out." version... if you know what I mean... depicting a situation that I won't get further into... except to say that it involves a towel... :love

:lol

Hehe... guess there isn't much interest in this companion figure... hmm... maybe I should just concentrate on getting this one finished soon instead, eh.? ;) :lol

Inara would be cool, but Jayne would be my second choice after Mal. ;)

I'm scared... he's too intimidating... :eek

:lol

I had originally posted interest in an Inara figure. I thought it'd be cool if the were to somehow fit directly next to Mal, like laying a hand on his shoulder or something.

My original post was much better. :p

Oh... sweet. :)

Gotta get myself into gear and get those buttons and buckles made, so I can prime the sucker and post some pics... yeah... hmm... just been so lazy and involved with doing other stuff and absolutely nothing that I just haven't been able to work on it... :rolleyes

I think it would be cool to have Inara as a...ahem.."companion" figure to Mal.

Though, I'll be happy to even have just Mal.

Yeah... I'll get back to y'all on that when the first are made.

I always thought it would be cool to recreate what's happening here:

Funny and interesting: that was actually the very image that gave me the idea of possibly making an Inara companion figure... that image EXACTLY. :eek :thumbsup :p
