Finished Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - now with Deathtrooper conversion on page 2.

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - building finished time to paint

I've had quite a few PMs asking what page the Stormtrooper files are on in JFCustoms thread or asking what files I'm using for the helmet.

In JF's thread they start on page 49:
http://www.therpf.com/f24/jfcustoms-foam-files-148889/index49.html

The helmet file is from here Home :
Stormtrooper Helmet with EVA Foam Pepakura

I however modified it a little to make it more friendly for the thicker foam, remove parts which weren't needed due to the foam thickness and reduce joints, that modified file is here:

That looks awesome so far, you've inspired my first pep build :) One question though, did you have to play with the scale much on the pep files? I am 186 cm and was hoping that all the pieces are in the same scale so if I need to adjust them I do it all the same

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - building finished time to paint

I'm 6ft 3" I didn't adjust anything and it all fits fine, I did have to add in a strip to give some extra width on the shin/calf armour that was all though.

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - building finished time to paint

This build is now pretty much finished.
The boots and canister need another coat of paint and I need to add the small details like buttons on the abs which I will do once the last coat of paint has dried on the abs, by tomorrow this build should be complete and if I can transport it all from work to home tomorrow I'll post a test fit pic so people can see the rest of the armour.

Might I inquire, have you done a trooper build before?

No this is the first time I've attempted one, only other foam build I've done is Ironman

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - building finished time to paint

Several reasons.
I wanted this to be a cheap build so didn't want to spend on flexible sprays like plastidip. This paint is more flexible than cheap sprays and much cheaper, one tin for £9 has done the full armour. I painted a piece of foam bent it in half screwed it up and no cracks.
It allowed me to skip the pva coats so made the build quicker I applied this straight onto the foam it took fine.

Nice idea! I might give that a try What type of paint is it - enamel or acrylic?

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - building finished time to paint

The tin doesn't seem to say what type it is but it is just standard household paint.

Wasn't able to get this home over the weekend but here's a pic of it all finished (minus a few touches of paint here and there) laid out.

If beginners are wanting to try building a suit of some sort I would highly recommend these files, JF has made them incredibly simple with each part having very few pieces, had I gone into this at 100% I am sure I could have had this built and painted within 4 or 5 days.

Do you know if this is 501st level?

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - Finished picture page 2

Definitely not, it's foam and misses quite a lot of the smaller details.

Re: Quick Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - Finished test wear picture page 2

Brought this home today and have done a test fit, I need to make a suspender belt for the thighs like I did with my Ironman suit and I also need to attach the belt to the waist to stop the gap in between, will likely just glue these together.

Although the arm bits may need some adjustment, apart from the helmet, I wouldn't know that wasn't a vac-formed suit. Brilliant!

If you upgrade in the future (resize the arms, get more accurate boots, and a second-hand bucket), it'll be perfect. If the 501st doesn't like that, they can suck it. Seriously. I have much more respect for anyone who can make that out a sheet of foam.

Where can I get that fabulous stuff and the appropriate paint and glue in the US? I'd like to take a shot at making some of my own, since the standard armor likely wouldn't fit me (think: Chris Griffin from the Family Guy, "Aren't you a little fat for a stormtrooper?"). That and I couldn't afford a proper set.

Please do not take offence to the 501st approvable process. It is a fantastic suit and commend you on your skills and how great the suit looks, but the 501st needs to the costumes to look and be made of the same materials (usually) to make it approvable, especially the iconic storm trooper. Don't get me wrong, if foam could be approvable in the 501st it would definitely save those love bites I get from the plastic pinching.

Kirk0, well done.

Re: Finished Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - Completed pictures page 2

Don't worry I knew this wouldn't be 501st standard lol. Thanks for the comments.
I'm likely going to trim the arms, I'm not happy with how loose they are and the forearm needs to be cut anyway as it was way to tight getting them on and off.
The foam is just exercise mat foam, hot glue and household gloss paint.
I'll likely try and get a good helmet for Halloween next year if I decide to wear this again then.

Re: Finished Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - Completed pictures page 2

So when I posed for the picture for the test fit photo and deciding how to stand I realised "this costume needs a blaster".

Now I wanted to keep this build as cheap as possible, so far I had managed to put this costume together for under £30. I had a look at the E11 hasbro blasters on ebay and they seem to sell in the region of £20-£30 so I decided on this Clone blaster which was around £5 AUTOIMAGES_HS87826lg.jpg

I had a small tin of semi gloss black paint from my helmet and also a tin of chrome paint left over from a past project so I didn't need to buy any paint.
I rubbed down the gun and used the sander wheel on my dremel to remove things such as the star wars logo. gave it a couple of coats of black, dry brushed it with the chrome and done.
Fairly pleased with the results, again it's not accurate but most people won't notice and it still lights up and fires nerf bullets which means I can shoot people at the party :lol

Blaster 1.jpgBlaster 2.jpgblaster 3.jpg

I then realised I needed a holster, I was all out of black paint and didn't really want to have to buy some to spray a holster black so figured I'd be better buying a small sheet of black pleather/vinyl if I had to buy paint. Then I went into the store room and there was my old broken computer chair which is black leather..... so seems as it was already broken I figured I'd borrow some material from it
Chair.jpg :lol

So I looked up some templates on line got out a ruler and cut away and this was the result.

Again not accurate but it does the job and looks the part and keeps the budget for this build at around £35.

Re: Finished Foam Stormtrooper Armour build - Completed pictures page 2

I had a PM about attaching various pieces of the suit, I figured I may as well post my reply in here also in case it can help anyone wanting to do a foam trooper build.

The chest and back piece should have shoulder staps to connect the two together, then you can then just slip it over your head, there isn't a pep file for these straps but I just worked out roughly what length I needed and made them myself, they look and attach like this:

6iOf2aG.jpg

I just made those and made sure the gap was right for me to be able to slip it over my head etc.
You also want some sort of connection at the bottom of the chest/back pieces, but you need to leave a gap in between they don't connect fully at the bottom they look like this:

Now this person has used a white strip to hold them together, but I believe and it should be black, I used black webbing/chord and snap buckles like these
h3lI1ku.jpg
(same as people use on ironman builds) make sure you use black for everything as it will blend with your black under suit and go unnoticed. You just have to work out so it looks right and leaves the gap then attach chord/buckles on either side.

Attachment I made for wearing the suit
:
I attached the shoulder bells to the shoulder straps discussed above using the chord/buckles like this:
VfNVPmI.jpg
(the pic uses buttons but you should still get the idea.

I then attached the bicep to the shoulder in the same way chord and buckle a bit like this:
LAUy2S2.jpg

The forearms I found are very tight so didn't use anything for these, infact these will likely be to tight to go over your hands so you will need to cut a slit the full length of the forearm and create a way so it can be fastened back together with velcro or something once wrapped around your arm, same applies to the shins they will be too tight to go over your feet.

The ab/stomach area I just attached a snap buckle to one side so it was like a big belt, same applied to the belt below this.

I also decided to attach the cod piece and butt plate to the belt with the buckles so they could be removed and re attached quickly and simply for sitting down and going to the toilet (a lesson I learnt from wearing my Ironman suit, standing up for hours can get annoying).

For the thighs you will need some form of garter/suspender belt, what I did for this was used an old belt (or you can make a belt with the buckles and chord) and glued 2 pieces of black chord to this with clips on the end which attach to clips inside the thighs, like this (excuse my poor drawing):

k5MaoYh.jpg

You wear this under your armour so it is hidden, it will stop your thighs from falling down, make sure the clips go at the front, anywhere else and they will restrict your movement.
