Finished 2015 Mag conversion - *New* progress pics, page 3

Re: Another Mag conversion

Quick video of my first electronics step. I decided to install the on/off switch in the white upper section. They are flat Judco switches and fit nicely. I plan on running the wires down the back of the shoe with some thin padding so that it will be a nice organised circuit.

Re: Another Mag conversion

Got most of the electronics now:

Soldering Iron kit
Green, Red, Yellow LEDs
9v batteries
Insulation tape
LED holder for the heel caps
17ohm resisters
Wiring

Just awaiting the inverter and and el tape, then the fun really begins. :cool

Re: Another Mag conversion

Cool Luke. It looks like you bought the clear LED's that light up either RED GREEN or YELLOW,right?

You may find that those are SUPER bright and direct focused (meaning the light they emit is not easily seen from angles, only straight on). The real MAG's, that you have, use diffused light LED's which can be seen from various angles.

I look forward to seeing them installed!

Are you going to do EL sheets in the soles?

Cheers Brad :thumbsup They are clear wide angled lights and when he showed me them in store I was at a 45degree angle and they were very bright so i'm hoping they're ok. If not, they're only 50p each so can easily swap them out.

I most definately am going to use el tape for the soles, it's the bit i'm most looking forward to doing! My test circuit is ok and i've got a plan of how to do the wiring in a very neat and be easily maintainable way.

I'm going to be interlinking the wiring before soldering and taping up and having a bit extra length on each wire so that they have room for flex and should be very secure.

Here's the switch that I used by the way (many thanks for MTB if you're reading buddy :thumbsup)

Cool! I look forward to seeing the LED's installed.

The EL sheet installation in the soles is pretty straight forward and easy.

Hopefully it will be done over the next week or two, thread might be a bit quiet until I get at least the first shoe done.

I did watch a video of someone playing with cutable el and it looked quite simple, just make sure you have an inverter ahead of it and off you go! The el tape I have ordered has a 2 wire splitter included so can power the logo and sole.

Re: Another Mag conversion

nice luke!!! but the mags uses colored LEDs than the clear types.. just a tip... but then again don't you already have the official MAGs for reference.. its way easier for you to check it out!

Re: Another Mag conversion

Well pointed out guys, but I decided to give these a try with a test circuit as they gave a good spread of light in the electronics store from all angles. As Brad pointed out, they're so bright that you can't see them properly on a camera but trust me, in real life I can go to any angle and they have a nice even bright coverage even with the clear rubber section over them as per my vid below.

Re: Another Mag conversion

Ok, having got the LEDs in and looking at the shoe, I think it's gonna be too fiddly to hide all the wires inside so I think I'm just gonna sponge tape them to the inside of the shoe one soldered. It will be easier to maintain also, I don't think I can be arsed to open and restitch the fabric.

How/where did others run the wires up to the top el strap? Did you put between the two fabrics and restitch or did you also tape them?

Re: Another Mag conversion

To all others that have done the light conversion, hats off even more do than before starting this project. Lmao! I have the shoe apart now and have dug out the space for the inverter and battery in the sole, I can see why you guys charge what you do now. Pics on the way!

When input the el in the strap I ran the wire out the back and into a small hole at the top of the boot. The hole is covered by the strap so cannot be seen.

The strap on mine started to crumble away and was looking awful (showing a light brown colour underneath) so I got some whitener that you use to touch up trainers with and they look brand new again

Re: Another Mag conversion

Cheers for the info Thomp. I have actually got some white leather and have recreated the straps so don't have to worry about the crumbly (so called) leather.

A more interesting update: all LEDs now installed neatly into heel cap. Each LED soldered, super glued, and insultation taped for secure connection for when wearing. Switch also installed in the correct position.

Also completely taken apart the two layers of fabric and removed toe cap. Cut off 1cm all the way around the bottom section and glued back in place, then tightened the lower fabric under the insole to stretch and give a very smooth toe section running down to the sole nicely. Pics tomorrow as on iPhone but it can be seen in video (just).

Managed to upload some progress pics -

Judco switch in correct position:

As you can see, sits nicely on the inside and isn't visible from the outside:

Tiny 3mm LEDs. Rubber section covers flat/perfectly over the LEDs:

Messy work! Enough room for the 9v and inverter with a bit of breathing space for the wires. Had to dig carefully so that I didn't go through the sole. Roughly 3mm left on the under so it isn't flimsy andshould last a good while:

Toe cap correction. Highly recommend to all with this shoe. It sits between a latex type rubber under fabric and the silver lycra. It's a hard plastic and is very easy to cut a good 1cm off the bottom. Once done, it can be put back between the fabrics with some fabric glue (very easy surfaces to glue) and you will need to pull the fabrics further under the insole to create a tight and sleek fit. It was the one area of the shoe (except for the horrible crumbly strap) that make it look like a boot and not a trainer in my opinion:

Re: Another Mag conversion

Hey Luke,
Why did you have to trim the toe? Didn't heat forming it work?

Hi Brad,

After wear testing the fabric began to loosen up and looked saggy unfortunately. This way is very secure just like Marks original design as it was simply trimmed to be sleek. Toes still fit perfect inside too.
