Hey Unit357. I used car paint for my cap shield.
First layer was a layer of black all over which primed it and helped to show up any lumps and bumps in the body filler over the screws.
Next layer was just a simple silver car paint, any silver would do but I made sure that the black was still kind of visible so it made it more convincing and looked like metal.
I didn't learn the Vaseline trick from anywhere specifically, I just know it blocks hair dye from staining your skin so I gave it a go with paint.
So next add the Vaseline where you want your battle damage. I wanted mine to look like I'd used the shield to ram my way through stuff so it would have been hit diagonally and been damaged as so. If you're only after a bit of damage back to go with the corners and around some of the edge, maybe a little bit in the middle at the highest point of the curve.
Next I sprayed the whole thing white, the brand I used is called HYCOTE and it's "Mazda Chaste white" which is kind of an off white/cream.
When it's dry wipe off all the vaseline, otherwise the tape won't stick properly, the silver should come through. Next mark out where you want your red with the tape. Make sure you apply more vaseline in the areas your about to spray red otherwise you'll be spraying over the silver. The red I used is by HYCOTE again and is called "Peugeot Cherry".
Then I googled a star, and traced it onto greaseproof paper. I then cut that star out and placed it in the middle, and repeated with the two smaller stars. Again make sure you take the vaseline off before applying tape. I can't stress enough to make sure you buff it all off, the slightest bit of residue and the tape won't adhere properly and could bleed. The mask off your blue portion and cover the bottom with newspaper to protect it from spray back.
I then shot it with "Peigeot Indigo Blue".
Once it's all dry you'll probably notice that around the battle damaged silver bits you may have some colour overlap. I had a little bit on most of them where the red white paint was still showing under the red, don't worry about it. Just grab a brush and get some black acrylic paint. Put the smallest amount possible on your brush, maybe rub it on a piece of paper to get rid of the bulk of it, then dry brush around the battle damaged areas. You can do this all over. I put quite a bit of black on the white to stop it looking too clean.
And there you go, just stick a coat of matt gloss over the top to protect your paint and you're done.
Sorry for such a long rambling tutorial but I hope that helped in any way
Good luck
