Female Loki Build - WIP - Updated 4/29 - Pic Heavy!

Hi there! I discovered this site a few weeks ago and am overjoyed that I did! What a great resource! As looking at the work and progress of others has greatly helped me with ideas and technicalities, I'll start a thread of my own to document my own adventure in costuming.

I'm doing Loki from Avengers - but as I'm a girl and enjoy a good bit of femininity, I'm altering the costume somewhat to be a female version. The helmet I am getting as close to film version as I can, along with the armour. The top will be changed, as well as the boots and some of the other clothing aspects of the costume. These are just plans right now. The past two weeks I have been solely working on sculpting the Helmet.

I am trying to do the helmet in two parts as i think this will give a better fit and look when worn. I recently finished sculpting the top part of the helm and it is now in its silicone mold. I ran out of time to make the mother mold on that last night, but will be doing that shortly. Crossing my fingers that it all comes out well! This is my very first time making a large sculpt and a mold of anything!

I have done various costuming for ren faires and movie replica costumes before, also as a side i make and sell custom earrings and horns from polymer clay. But these are pretty small scale, and by working on this helm I have finally been able to start exploring the world of modeling clay, large sculpture, and molding. I have been wanting to do this FOREVER!

Sorry for the lengthy intro. If you made it though, thanks! If you skipped ahead and just want to look at pics, also thanks! Any comments or suggestions are greatly welcomed. I will be updating this with more pics as the process continues. Thanks and wish me luck! :p

Update 4/29/13 - Got my friend to take some pics of me in my more complete-ish costume. Still a WIP but looking more whole :] Go to page 5 for more pics!

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

Thanks so much for the positive responses :]

Yesterday afternoon and evening I was able to sculpt up the bracers! Just editing the photos I realized i forgot one small detail on them, but I like how they look currently so i may not add it.. hmmm. we'll see. :p

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

From one female Loki to another... welcome aboard the mischief train! :D Glad to hear you've started your own thread.

Love your sculpting work thus far, especially the bracers. Best of luck and I'll keep hopping by!

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

That looks good, and in case you didn't know, Loki became female in the comics.

Hey Jaina! Thanks for the comment and encouragement :] Will definitely be more in touch with you as this progresses :D

Thanks Apoc :] I did some research about Loki in the comics because after seeing Thor i was considering doing the comic Lady Loki or Lady Sif getup, because i loooove scale maille! However, I don't like the fur cloak, nor do I like the more angular horns of the comic female version. I was torn about what to do until I saw the Avengers, and loved both the film and the costumes so much that I knew that was the version I wanted to work with :] Just a few adjustments to make it more female friendly, but keeping with the overall look and feel of it. Sculpting altered pieces starts today! Wheee!

Most welcome gal, and I'm looking forwards to it.

I fully agree about Lady Loki/Lady Sif with the fur and all. While I like the design overall w/Loki being a wild beauty, it's not for me. I love the sleek look that Loki bears in the movie!verse much more, and look forwards to sporting it with a few feminine twists.

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

Last night I sculpted the necklace - which is the first costume part that I'm modifying to make it more fitting to the female form. In the movie it looks like he has a solid piece of armour covering his upper chest - black with that gold design across the center of it. I am getting rid of the large black piece and doing the gold design instead as a large necklace. That way it can be worn over a shirt, or just my chest when i'm limiting the layers. I shaped it with curves so that it will fit fairly snugly to my form. Once this upcoming event is over I will probably toy around with making another version of it that is more film accurate and less shaped to the body. Anyways, I'm pretty excited about it :]

The first pic is the design in paper and where i want it to rest when worn. 2nd is a regular view, and 3rd shows the curves so it will lay better against the chest.

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

Like what you're doing to the necklace, that's pretty much what I'm doing w/my femme!Loki as well. And true, it's very versatile as you can wear it over the black stuff or just over bare skin depending on which side of the Bifrost you wake up on that morning. ;)

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

Is it just me, or do we have more women doing Loki costumes than men on the forum? Hahaha!

Looking good.

It's true, it's really true. The ladies love Loki, what can I say? :love

Oh yeah.
Technically, I'm making the costume for my husband ... I'm not sure what side that puts me on here.

Re: Female Loki Build - In Progress

That's awesome to see more Ladies playing Loki :D I love it!

I have been working straight on my costume since I last posted, with a huge amount of help from my husband. However we've had a lot of setbacks time-wise and frustration-wise with the fiberglass and resin casting process, especially with the horns and lower helmet. The horns we eventually got to work, with the help of a ton of bondo, but the lower helm is being a pain in the butt!!! I'm going to try to cast it one more time with the last of my resin, but if that doesn't work, the costume may be a bust, at least for the event I was planning to go to - ConnectiCon, which is on saturday. :[ LAME!

But, hopefully the stars will align and i can somehow make it work and we'll see how it goes from there. Will be uploading pictures tonight when I can no longer sand things :p

Update Part 1 - Lower Helm and Horns!

I didn't have time to update this or any site with pics as it was happening - i barely ate or slept the last week in order to get this project done enough, phew! Today I finally have time, so I will update with pics starting earlier and ending with me at the Con :] Enjoy!

Nice pic of it testing the hammered gold paint i got :]

Bent steel bars around trees to get them in the correct shape to use for the base of the horns to put clay around. Had a hell of a time getting them to sit correctly with the helm tho lol.

Update Part 2 - Scepter

The long staff/scepter that Loki has I was lucky enough to get my husband to make for me :] While i've been busy sculpting all the pieces for the helm, necklace, and bracers, he's been carving the scepter out of wood and plastic. He even wired in a LED light with a switch into the "gem" so it lights up. MOST excellent :] Here are some pics of the staff midway through - the blade is nearing completion, but the carving and painting of the shaft still to be done. Will have to take more pics of the updated Scepter tomorrow :]
