Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

I just have one observation that might be helpful unless you already have it figured out. It seems like the eye-holes are a little big if you go by the frame shape on the pattern. You really want to allow yourself enough room to glue the mask on to the shell (if you get one) or the frames themselves and if you don't have enough fabric to do that, you'll be in trouble...This is what my mask looks like when you remove the frames.

You see the frames end up covering the extra fabric anyways so why not give yourself more fabric room to play with? Just my 2 cents.

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

I thought that was your real eye at first! ***** On Ice Skates that was terrifying!!

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

Thanks for the tip El Fett, but once again I have given it much consideration. Once I have Joelai's lenses I'll make a template to fit, hopefully the lenses are bigger than the hole.

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

I trimmed and pinned one of the patterns up today to see what it would look like, not to shabby if I don't say so myself

I've decided that it would be much more effective to commission a 3D artist to produce a textured honeycomb pattern and webbing to mold a urethan positive. I'll keep you posted with the updates.

That sounds wicked! I'm sure it's done in a similar fashion on the screenused suit...
BUT wouldn't it be too hard to get the molded honeycomb pattern to align with the pattern on the print? Would it be possible to make the pattern so consistant with the printed (and cut) one that you wouldn't waste too much material as you cut it into pieces? Would it be glued then?

I know you've probably thought of this already too :lol

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

Yep, I'm a thinker. All I have to do is provide the artist with pattern for dimensions and provide precise measurements taken from the scaled print, assuring the honeycomb will match the pattern perfectly. From there on it's all their problem. Too easy! But that's still a ways off. I'm still yet to find somewhere to sew the prints.

Sounds like a good idea and looks really good!

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

Didn't really want to start a thread for this question, so I'll ask it here since you're about at the stage where it applies. Has anyone ever tried, instead of sewing, actually heat-welding the lycra? Assuming it's a nylon/lycra blend, I feel like this would be possible, and it may facilitate much finer seam lines at the end of the day. If anyone can tell me if they've tried this, I'd like to know how you did it.

Oh, and loving your work so far! It looks great!

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

Haha! I wish I had moar at this stage. Currently the first prototype is off being sewn up and should be back sometime next week, I'm waiting on Jorlai's lenses to turn up in the mail any day now and I'm in discussions with a 3D artist about making a model of the honeycomb and webbing. You will know as soon as there is any news, remember great things come to those who wait, or so they say. Stay tuned spideyfans!

I think heat welding it would make it lose it's flexibility.

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

I was ignoring that question entirely, as it was a silly idea.

Could you tell me why? I do know that there is such a thing as welding fabrics: Plastic welding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. You can even buy fabric heat welding machines (Fabric Heat Welding Machine-Fabric Heat Welding Machine Manufacturers, Suppliers and Exporters on Alibaba.com), but the ones I've found seem to be used more for industrial applications.

Anyways, why do you think it's a silly idea? Have you had any experience with trying it? What do you think would happen if you tried?

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

It would look terrible, that's about it. You know the screen used masks were all sewn together anyway so to do so would be inaccurate. Sure it's plausable but not practical and I'm very sure it's not pheasable for this project. That's all I'll say on the matter.

In other news, I've just recieved word from Joelai that the lenses posted out today. Sweet!

Cool cool. Thanks for the response. And sorry for slightly hijacking your thread. Sometimes my inexperience and enthusiasm gets the better of me.

On to the regularly scheduled awesomeness!

Re: Fan's Amazing Spiderman Mask Project.

No problems rookie! Good luck to you.

QAUSI MOAR!

Great news! Had the day off due to a most excellent bicycle crash and what should appear at the doorstep? Yes, the lenses have arrived in a very timely fashion. Thanks Joelai! After unwrapping the lenses I was a little paranoid that they might be too small for my print, but upon placing the lenses on top of an unsewn print I was suprised to see they fit prefectly. SCORE!!!!

Since the testicle print is still off at the seamstress' being sewn I wasn't able to take a picture of the lenses on a completed mask. Sorry. The mask should be ready by the end of the week so expect moar soon. Stay
