Fallout 76

The weathering in that image looks a lot more extreme than my reference... Plus the red color. *heh*

Yeah, I'm gonna do the more extreme weather job. She's gonna look nasty.

Also, the picture of my helmet isn't so great. It's a little brighter in person, the day was rainy and dark when I took the pic. This is the same red I used for my Nuka Blaster kit, and it looked pretty bright on that (cast was a lighter color though, too).

I'm torn on getting this now because PC Gamer said it dropped to $36. Part of me says to go for it and the other says if that few people are playing that they dropped the price a second time in a couple weeks, it may not be around as long as they intend.

Damn. If I had 36 buck I'd jump on it. Broke at the moment. :(

I'm using your helmet inventory pic to help site the physical damage, but I'm going with the ones I posted for level of grime.

Did you use a white primer under the red? Tends to help reds and yellows pop more (not that you need me 'splaining that to you). Since Nuka-Cola is more Coke than Pepsi, I'm color-matching Coke-label red for my paint job. Its a good match for the loading sceen and armor frame pics, and a little darker than the outdoors ones -- which makes sense if those are a little washed-out by the light. And, as you point out, it's about the color of the Nuka-Cola logo, too.

In game and in the reference pics, the Nuka-suit looks pretty hot-rod/candy-apple red. Nowhere near the Vault-Tec color issue. Meanwhile, I'm still hunting up good colors for the Quantum-suit...

As for the price-drop, that's a Black Friday-Cyber Monday deal. Saw the same thing with the Destiny 2 Forsaken pack (the one that comes with the base game and both expansions). It's also dropped from $60 to $30-$35 (depending on where one is shopping) for this weekend.

Hey, GhostMinion, PM me your mailing addy. I owe ya, and this I can do.

See, an interesting thing I wanna bring up is the very tricky nature of color lighting in Fallout 4.

Look at this Mini Nuke, for example. In this compare shot, the two green colors look different, with my prop looking darker. Also look at how the two rendered nukes in between look identical in terms of the green.

Yet in this pic, they look much closer. This pic had better lighting, under a florescent lamp. So the lighting can play a bigger part. And just like the light changes it so dramatically on the prop, as you noted it does the same on the game. Indeed the red looks brighter on your pics, but it is outside in the bright light. That being said, I do plan on going over the red more on the helmet. I mean, I still have to do the visor bezel anyways. I have a shade that I used on my Nuka Clock that should look nice and bright. I did not prime in white, honestly I don't care for white primer. The kind I got last (home depot brand) never fully dried right, same experience once with the grey primer too. I've only come to trust the dark grey/black primer or the terracotta colored primer.

Another thing that gets tricky is when you blackwash the props. This will darken your prop no matter what. On the nukes, for instance, I opted not to blackwash entirely because I wanted to avoid darkening the already dark green. I do think the overall look suffers from that though, and I think it would look better if it were dirtier (I actually intend to go back over them and add a little detail).

I'm-a migrate my response over to your power armor helmet thread, since you posted your repaint there, too. It's getting less relevant to F76, I think.

As for 76, for those looking to mod or extract, it looks like it's pretty easy on PC. The assets seem to be packed in exactly the same way as FO4, and the B.A.E. software works on it just fine. They were only a couple days into the beta when the first mods appeared.

My wife is getting me Fallout 76 on Xbox One X for Christmas....even though the majority of reviews are very negative, i love the Fallout games and am willing to take a chance on it.

I'm not finding a lack of content yet. It's a little more "make your own fun" than 3 or 4, but there are still quests and stuff. Exploring the world has always been the best part to me and this is a huge ass world.

Yea, I'm experiencing a shift in play style that I'm having to adjust to. When you start out you can just follow a quest, and it takes from one building, to the building next door, then the building next door to that. But after 20 hours, you've got 10 different quests, all over the map, that will send you all over the place. Your (well, MY) inclination is to want to move from one building, to the next, to the next, clearing the map of interesting things to find as I go, but I think I'm just going to bite the bullet, and start blitzing off across the map, adventure style, and come back and search other ruins as I feel like it.

Have to say, I was in the Beta but didn't actually get to play during the Beta due to changes in my work schedule. That said, after some updates to my system, I started playing and have binge played it just as I did with Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas when they came out. There are issues with it being online; but, if you've played online games, you already know the DC issues that can arise due to crap done by your service provider as much as anything. My DCs on the Bethesda servers have been minimal. In a week's worth of play I've probably been disconnected about once a day average while running 12-18 hour days. Yeah. Lovin it.

Best part of any Bethesda open world game is exploring. You'll probably wind up overencumbered pretty fast if you haven't already figured that out. No sweat. It'll slow you down; but, enjoy the vistas and the discovery. Learn the world and it'll make your long game a tremendously informed game. Just also remember there's no rush to get power armor. You'll find it all over the place but you can't use it till level 25 or so.. so till then it's just gonna be dead weight in your inventory or chewing up space in your limited stash.. Good luck and enjoy. It's an amazing game. It has issues; but, all games do. And the level of screaming I've seen just isn't justified for the game experience I've had. And I generally detest online games. Anecdotally, I was getting the tar beat out of me by two wendigos the other day when a player ran up and bailed my bacon out unexpectedly. I'm playing solo. But those little interactions with actual other people in game - with the bethesda gaming mindset.. it ain't rust. People help each other out in this game and ain't seekin advantage as Mal Reynolds would say.. It ain't Rust. ;)

Does anybody know of any model viewers that will load up 76's meshes (.nif's)? I got the game, and successfully extracted the mesh files, but my viewer (using Nifskope) won't load them up for viewing and .obj conversion.

Really trying to get ahold of the 10mm SMG and Ultracite helmet meshes...…..

Alright, I started playing the game yesterday. At this point in time, I haven't played enough to be able to give my take or review of this game. I will, when the time is right. But for now, a couple thoughts and my first impressions:

The concept of this game doesn't seem so far fetched. Sure, the world is lonely, but for some reason, given the post apocalyptic nature, this feels appropriate enough. After all, we the vault dwellers are the ones who are supposed to rebuild America, right?

The actual gameplay was not bad. How things are set up seems kinda cool, with the weapon degradation and food rotting and such. I like it. It feels "survival-ly". So in terms of gameplay, not too disappointed at the moment. V.A.T.S. being an aimbot did not bother me that much either, to be honest.

So, so far at least, I could say that this seems a bit fun. Not fun like I'm playing Fallout 5, but fun like I have when playing Fallout Shelter (and I like Fallout Shelter a lot!) It is so far a fun game.

However...…….

The graphics. The visuals. Basically, all of what I'm seeing, looks freakin' TERRIBLE. I mean it is bad. This game has a serious problem with shadows. I was standing in the street, and I'm literally surrounded by tree limb shadows. It would be like if the sun was coming in at five different directions. And for some reason, everything at a distance is blurry most of the time.

And the shadows themselves, geez don't get me started. Pixelated all to hell and back. See for yourself:

Not too impressed with the visual experience here so far. I know they have a lot of work to do fixing it, and that people say it'll get fixed. My response to that is they better get to fixin' the dang thing then. And get it done yesterday!

Next, the online aspect. So, in the time that I played, I ran into two people. One was literally outside of the vault when I left, dressed in Nuka Cola Power Armor. He seemed to be more interested in the view than anything else, and didn't seem to care one bit that I was there. Another guy I ran into was in some junk town, and he seemed to purposely want to make distance between us as I followed him a short bit. Again, pretty much no different as if they weren't even there in the first place. So far, no griefing or any of that stuff.

So, if I had one complaint or thing that I'd ask Bethesda, it would be to make the game look better, especially before worrying about adding content. And if you're gonna make us pay for cool looking Power Armor paintjobs, it would be wise to make a much bigger selection than the few options they have so far.

GhostMinion What platform are you on? It looks like you don't have soft shadows at all. They look great in my game. The outdoor lighting is one of the best I have seen to date. The indoor lighting isn't amazing however.

The default depth of field is quite high. If on PC, you can easily disable it in the INI file. I ran without it enabled for a bit, but now prefer the depth of field. Without it, distant objects can look at bit too simple due to the level of detail reduction.

Level 100 now. And still no griefers. I have had quite a few player coop encounters. So far I have done four nuke zones. Every-time people were working together heavily. I have done a few events with others, most of the time people just part ways afterwards with nothing more than a thumbs up. 99% of the game plays just like a regular Fallout game. Explore, loot, find the next mission.

Yeah, I'm running it on PC.

As far as outdoor lighting goes, I think they over did it. I find it is consistently too bright outside. I never thought I'd have to squint my eyes for a Fallout game.

Overall, I really do think the game looks like crap. Especially compared to FO4. The field of view is a problem for me too. I find that I can only play for a couple hours before I need to give my eyes a break.

But so far, the worst are those limb shadows. They are everywhere! It's literally like there's eight suns shining down from different directions. It looks un-natural as hell. And the break up the shadow pattern causes also aids in hurting my eyes, and it's really distracting.

It's not so bad when I'm off the roads, maybe out gathering flora or something. But walking down the street right now kinds sucks.

Played for a couple hours last night. Just as before, I didn't have any trouble finding the game engaging. I like the slow progression with the weapons and armor. I don't like being handed everything at the beginning. I like to start out with garbage and work my way up, gaming is much more rewarding this way. Everybody should know what I mean, imagine what you thought when you found Power Armor so quickly in Fallout 4. Probably felt too soon (despite that they felt differently since it was the weakest armor).

No, that's not a problem here. I'm struggling to maintain a couple pipe weapons. Ammo is relatively scarce. Not impossible to find, but not littered everywhere either.

In short, so far so good in terms of gameplay. Didn't see another soul on there the whole time. I know there were others, I could see someone on my map was wanted. But I never ran into anybody. It most certainly does feel more apocalyptic in my opinion. I guess I get why people are missing the NPC's and such, but I think the loneliness puts a different spin on it that sorta feels natural.

Ugh. Hate snallyghasters. More grouchy, though, that I keep getting so little Ultracite from taking out scorchbeasts. And you want eyes, have you run into radtoads or honeybeasts yet?

Despite the bugs this game is awesome. The lack of NPCs for me add to the immersion (everybody is dead and you are just exploring the ruins, very much like I am Legend). Griefing has happened to me but I found it apropiate in this game, as if had encountered the bad guys from the Mad Max or the 1st Dawn of the Dead movies. Building and improving your own base is also really engaging. I just wish the world was persistent so people could work together in creating communities and towns, instead of just being random encounters. Also push to talk should be added to PS4 as well, everybody turned down their mics after the first days. Or they cant hear you unless you are on the same team.

Graphics are on the ugly side and looks outdated... however I feel it also adds to the somber atmosphere of the game, I'm not really missing beautiful visuals here. But lights should be improved (the game looks notably better in foggy areas without so many lights and shadows)

It is more a survival game than a RPG, most of the time your "quest" will be looking around for screws to fix your stuff, find plans to craft better items, find food and water... just survive the wasteland, without further plot. And its the kind of game I have been waiting for for a long time.
