EP VII Millennium Falcon

Steve... you're modelling in the bent hull panel edges too? You're INSANE man!!

heh, you know it.

Steve, your attachment in post # 500 (wow!) failed to show up. I see this occasionally with images from 'dead hosts'... or those without public access (aka a login...)

finished up my TFA wankel. Funny looking thing... Looks like they modeled the wankel-half on the starboard side (a little roughly) and then mirrored it and called it a day. C'mon guys... though I guess you could suppose that whatever that thing is on the falcon was replaced with a newer version of a different brand or make.

I always thought it was the mandible clamping mechanism... working 'em like a lobster claw. Awesome 3D as always, SS!

I like it, has more detail,
i noticed that there seemed to be differences in the digital asset used between stills and movie falcon , I must look at it again.
and while I noticed the differences in the entex , initially it looked like they roughly followed the original then pulled it away (extruded) from the side wall leaving flat shelves all around , yours looks better ,

thanks vacformedhero. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, and I'm glad to get it out of the way.

there definitely are a bunch of different assets, or at least different versions. Just one little example, there was that disappearing re-appearing red panel in the rear port quarter, during the escape from Jakku sequence. It was guessed that maybe the red-paneled shots, which first showed up for the trailer, were an earlier model used just for the trailer shot, but I noticed that same shot with the red panel made it into the movie. The rest of the sequence the panel is gray. Can't wait for screencaps, so I can nail down all the different versions.

One version I'm really interested is the model they use to flesh out the rest of the full-scale partial falcon set they built. Visible mainly at the very end, as Rey is looking down from the long stairway. Wondering if that was just a digital matte, or what?

Yeah, I couldn't see it either. :(

hmm, I think the image was too big. Will try to reupload.

We'll find out all those little secrets when more "Behind The Scenes" images start popping up! :)

heh, sure. I use skechup's native photomatching function. Mainly it's a matter of finding images that have as little distortion as possible, but sometimes ones that look like they don't turn out to have lots. Matching the perspective can be tricky, and it's best to have multiple angles of whatever you're modeling. Then I'll start some rudementary modeling, trying to pin down the object's center lines. I usually work with roughly symmetrical objects, so I can make a pair of copied and mirrored instances down the center line. Once I start building, if something on the right side is not matching up with the corresponding shape on the left, then I probably need to adjust the photomatch. Rinse and repeat. I'll switch around through several photomatches, to make sure the geometry is fitting the images from more than one angle. A little more than half the time, nothing matches anything. Or one thing will seem to match, but not match in any way in other angles. And I have to either abandon everything, or wait for more reference to surface.

The most ideal situation is to have some plan and/or elevation drawings of the object. Once the photomatch is down, the drawings can be put in place. This method mostly just makes workflow much faster, since you could obviously just work straight from the drawings. Really helps with placement of greebles or other details not drawn in, or that differ from the drawings.

and I use patience liberally throughout.

Has anyone tackled the job of harmonizing the exterior studio models/miniatures to the interior sets? I mean in a more in-depth way than initial parameters ("oh yeah, the Falcon would need to be at least 40% bigger to fit the sets"), to actually doing the measuring, creating CG sets to place inside of a scaled Falcon CD model?

This may be a retarded question, but...

you mean something like this? I made it years ago, and it's a model of the exterior set they built combine with the interior set (with some movie magic to solve the problem of the two not fitting each other).

at the moment, I actually am working on what you suggest though. Once I'm done with my "new and improved" exterior copy of the CG asset, I'll render a new video flyingthrough similar to the above. I've got a model based on the new interior set piece in the works.

I think the first shot was of the full size model with the other half digitally filled in.....The two red stripes & hex opening dont really match the CG 5Footer

Kind of hard to tell......the movie still lacks definition

It is nice that as Rey ascends the steps you still see the Falcon from different angles

I agree, that's what I mean. I wonder what the details are like on the model they used to digitally fill-in the full scale set.

by the way, here's a case in point, you have no idea how many times I tried to photomatch that early image of the partial full-scale falcon. That was ********* infuriating! It never worked, but it would come so so close.

hah!

man, how great is it though that they honored the tradition of no two Falcon's being alike in the same movie. When I say they did their homework, this is what I mean. There was no pandering when it came to the Falcon, it was made by folks who love that ship as much as and to the obscure degree that we do. If nothing else, that sold me on this movie, I can't even help it if that's a dumb reason to love this piece of junk of a star wars flick.
