Sounds like a fan scratchbuild idea.Might be a dumb idea and probably not cost effective but towards the end of STTMP the crew literally walk off of the tip of the saucer section onto V'ger as the saucer edge is kinda docked with it. They could have made a removable stand alone support to replicate a piece of the V'ger ship to hold up the front of the saucer section, which at least would have been in keeping with the movie. Just a thought.

Yes. There are companies that cut them to the length you want and finish off the edges of the rods too. I think glass rods will look a lot nicer than the black steel rods and I don't think the saucer section is going to exert 24,000 psi onto the rod.LINK: Hardened glass rods

Tempered glass generally breaks at approximately 24,000 psi.
You know, having now looked at the new photos posted in the last couple of hours, I think you could be right. There's a much bigger hole just below the bridge than was on the prototype, which could be explained if they're trying to integrate hull lighting. That’s what I thought at first too, but looking at the studio model, it seems relatively vertical with gentle slope. It’s hard to tell but maybe the polar lights kit is too raked? Also the front of the bridge module has some interesting windows. Wondering if they’re trying to accommodate top registry lighting

I believe the big light opening is nixed due to it being unsuccessful. They’re experimenting with the small light slit above it now (that was part of the filming miniature)I REALLY don't want big light openings appearing on the model if they weren't on the original miniature.
That would be more of deal breaker than the black support rods to the saucer IMHO. I thought they were aiming to get this as close to the fillming miniature appearance as possible, but putting in additional lighting openings into locations that weren't on the FX model is a big no-no to me.
Honestly, they should not have even bothered trying to do it in the first place if it meant introducing a big light opening that isn't on the original filming miniature. I doubt that any alterations will be made either, but if there were any quality issues the US buyers identify it would give us the chance to reconsider if necessary. So another 4 - 5 months? That's a long time.
Hmm. Am I willing to wait that long, that is the question. It's true that feedback will be available, but I very seriously doubt they'd make any alterations after the first batch are made.
