Tomy TOS Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser waitlist

I think TOMY is making a mistake not going for the K'tinga instead. Taking into account the numbers for the Refit Enterprise, that would have been a solid choice.

As someone who grew up during the TOS movies era in the 80s and who is a big TNG fan, I also enjoy TOS. But it's not at the top of my list. I can be talked into buying a TOS Enterprise probably, because it's iconic and the first. But a TOS Klingon ship? That's a non-starter for me, especially since the K'tinga has so much awesome detail on it. I would have ordered a K'tinga.

I mean, just look at the numbers:
  • The D-7 appears in 7 episodes of TOS, 8 if you count the Romulans.
  • The D-7 appears 4 times in TAS.
  • The D-7 appears once in DS9 and once in VOY.

  • The K'tinga appears in TMP, TWOK, TUD.
  • The K'tinga appears in TNG 4 times.
  • The K'tinga appears in DS9 9 times.
  • The K'tinga appears in VOY 2 times.
  • The K'tinga appears in Star Trek 2009.
  • As for nuTrek, the K'tinga appears twice in Picard and once in Strange New Worlds.
I'm sure I'm missing some.

So it's a bold miscalculation on TOMY's part: I feel like they've narrowed the interested parties to serious TOS fans only.
I tend to disagree with your statement. The line of ships that will be produced by TOMY will have sales that fluctuate depending on the popularity of the ship. That's to be expected. But all the ships in the ST universe have fans. Them producing the TOS D7 as the third in A LONG line of eventual ST ships being a bold miscalculation seems rather exaggerated and overly fatalistic. Not every ship is going to sell as well as the REFIT, TOS or D. Those will be their big hits. But TOMY wants to satisfy all fans, so I applaud them for making or at least attempting to make all the ships to satisfy all the fans.

I've seen fans screaming for a Reliant, SNW Enterprise, Romulan ships, JJ Abrams ship (Bleah), various shuttlecrafts...not all will sell or be made but the appeal is vast and varied and TOMY like I said is trying to appeal to the taste of all the fans.

They made two very popular ships coming out of the gate. Not everything they make will be a hit. Let's be happy that they are attempting to make ships from the ST universe that satisfy all fans.

Heck I want a Galieo Shuttlecraft from the TOS and I really doubt that will make the numbers of the Refit or TOS. But I want it and I hope they make it.

Totally fair points, respect all the way!

But I still hold to my argument. It's not good business to choose to spend a year or more funding and producing an item that you KNOW is not going to show the kinds of numbers as something else. It's honestly a strange choice. Perhaps they're trying to serve the TOS fans before they age out? That's the only reasoning I can think of, which is mighty cool, I'll admit.

Revelationspec made a point that TOMY may be trying not to blow their load to early...making all the popular ships so close together...he may have a point. I really thought the D would be next. But it is what it is. You may be right that they may be trying to appeal to the boomer crowd as much as they can before their time is up. I'm not sure what their strategy is as long as they keep making these die cast replicas.

This D7 may not be from the motion picture but I still think this it's cool! As a designer myself I love 60's design and while the price is higher than expected I will pick this one up. I think they gotta make the Motion picture version at some point. That ship is definitely high on everyone's list for sure!

The lighting on the K'tinga is so much more interesting as well. Trying to use the green engine lighting used in post TOS shows is a bit of a cheat.

By the time TOMY make the entire list of wants we will all be dead and buried . Just saying. ;) ;)

Well, as a probable outlier who actually voted for the TOS D-7 to be their next ship, I'm excited! I wonder if it was voter response that influenced their decision?

Either way, I would love to have the Klingon ship displayed next to the TOs Enterprise.

I hope they will get around to the Romulan Bird of Prey too (not holding my breath for that).

The K'tinga would look great with the lighting. I just don't like the post TOS "let's make the D7 look cool" with green engine lights. It's fine but it's not TOS.

There thousands and thousands of younger TOS fans. I think you are putting too much thought into this. Look at the Wand Tricorder and how quickly it sold out. A little prop from the show that we get few close ups of is selling like hot cakes and its $165 more than the original price they thought it would be. The TOS communicator and Phaser same thing and now people pay well over the original price for these aftermarket.

The fact is they wanted to try to keep things consistent at 1/350 at the moment. They released the two most popular first. Anything after will not be as popular. Just the way it is. The D will probably eventually be released but don't expect it to be $700. It will probably be north of 1k. With all the detail and lighting there is no way it won't be.

You don't have to like this release. You don't have to get it. Just wait till the next release and see what they do.

Everyone is debating which ships should be made, which ship they want, which should be made in which order etc etc. But TOMY, at least the impression I get, is committed to making all ships from all generations which will take years.

Of course many of us are being selective…for a variety of reasons…wives, girlfriends, husbands, space, economics…but someone or more than someone will be buying them all.

If that happens I would love to see that display, because the site of THAT COLLECTION would so freaking tremendous! And I would be very jealous.:)

I'm getting one of these to go with my TOS Enterprise, but I'll admit that I would rather have the K'tinga to go with my upcoming Refit. I would have gotten two even.:)
Me to. I would have preferred the K’tinga for sure! But I love what they did to this TOS version so I’m getting this as well! It’s gonna look cool next to my TOS!

I would love to know what the basis for this choice at this time was, because it does seem like an unusual one.

I was wondering last night if the Refit has cost them more to make than they planned (it really does seem like they went above and beyond with that thing, except for the saucer supports....), and they wanted their next release to be something cheaper and easier to build to make some actual money before moving onto the next tricky project.

Here’s one possible display idea.

Not unusual. They want to keep going at 1/350. Simple as that. Many of us wanted it to go with the TOS-E..Hope they eventually do a Romulan War bird as well..

As for the $700.... did everyone just think they were gonna continue to offer such a low of price. The first one hooked many. Everyone spouted off how cheap it was. It was a bargain. The second was increased in price and it looks like they are settling on that as a base price now. I'm sure the tariffs had a bit to do with it as well. If the D is made I hope everyone knows it won't be $700 even with the smaller scale. There is just no way they will do it for that price.

They're going to be forced to ditch 1/350 before too long because they've started with the smallest ships at the largest physical size they want to make the models. There aren't many major ships that are smaller than the D7.

The price alone isn't necessarily a problem, i just meant for me personally I don't want a huge D7 enough to want to spend that much money, that's all. I'd happily spend well over $1000 for an Enterprise D at the same physical size as the 350 Refit and I'm happy for everyone who wanted a large D7.

As much as I love the D. For some reason I just don't want it. My Diamond select is more than sufficient enough.
