Disney could sell Lucasfilm ?

You know, with Kathleen Kennedy. Looking at her record, between a producer and executive producer, while not the creative role as a director, she still was in charge of a ton of highly acclaimed fan favorite films. I understand why George really thought he could completely trust her in this role, but it didn't work out, much to his disappointment, and all the fans.
What does anyone think went wrong.
Bob Iger and others over her?
Or maybe the role she played as producer in all those films is so vastly different from being the president of a whole company, despite both being leadership type roles.
Its just odd in a way.
Wanted to see what everyone thinks of that type thing.

Watching Jurassic Park last night, I had forgotten she was one of the producers....maybe in name only?
Maybe Steven felt bad for her and put her name on the credits but actually made her sit in the corner. Yeah, I have no idea.
 
All they have to do is put maximum effort into the video game side of star wars. The film/tv side could never make as much money as a well fleshed out catalogue of video games and that sweet micro transaction money. Just ask EA they're only worth around 7.5 billion.

The same thing will happen to the video game side...they will start pushing their slosh through that as well..like the new Star Wars Outlaws game that's coming out...it's about a woman who's been held back her whole life and she's had enough...really? It's all tainted under the current regime and people will not pay for trash as we are seeing in other notable companies of late.

The only story they need for a video game is this simple story....

A guy's master just died, he left him his speeder and a baby pet chuba. Some guys break in steal his speeder and kill his chuba. He grabs his lightsaber turns it on, it's red, your fall f*cked, he's a Sith, LETS GO!

Disney is about $48 billion dollars in debt and next year they are going to pay Comcast at the very minimum $27.5 billion for Hulu. Would they sell Lucasfilm to help ease some of that financial strain? I believe they would but the problem is, as CopperRevan pointed out, Lucasfilm is not worth enough to sell. It's no longer even worth the $4 billion they paid George for it. Why? Because the properties contained within Lucasfilm have all been exhausted.

When Disney first purchased the company, the market potential for Star Wars was huge. A new movie alone with the original cast reprising their roles, regardless of quality, was guaranteed to make over a billion dollars right off the bat. Then you also had the likely return of Harrison Ford to play Indiana Jones. That plus new shows and a proposed theme park gave the company a high valuation. Ten years later, Disney has released a lackluster string of movies and shows that over-saturated the market and basically diminished enthusiasm for Star Wars and the other LF properities. Any company buying Lucasfilm now would no longer benefit from the accompanying popularity that Disney inherited because it's no longer there. The prospect of a new Star Wars movie is not a billion dollar guarantee anymore. Also, you no longer have the Indiana Jones series as the upcoming movie will be the last one. Willow certainly is dead as an IP. So what's left?

Disney's best option is to hang onto LF and try to rebuild it, if that's possible at this point.

While the idea of George buying back LF sounds preposterous, ironically he'd be the most viable buyer because him being back in charge would be the biggest boost to revitalizing Star Wars as a money maker.

Basically. I doubt she had any role greater than an administrative one. She certainly wasn't calling any shots. By the way, her contract is up next year. My guess would be that she retires which gives both her and Disney an 'out' but you never know. She might still stick around. It would surprise me if she did, but it wouldn't shock me either lol.

I wonder if Disney would consider having George, if he was also willing, to be fully in charge of all new Star Wars projects, pretty much like he was before, but they still own it, so nether would lose any money over it, and both would actually profit over any project.
Like any gamble, may or may not work, but at this point, a lot of people seeing George in control even under the Disney label might at least help future projects. George might also just be like, nah.

Yeah, I think he'd say nah. If he was still interested in making more Star Wars, he probably wouldn't have sold it. Plus, I don't think he'd want to have to answer to executives at Disney.

True. Of course, he was really hoping that would take care of his baby....but sadly, they've let it pretty much fall down a drain.

If Disney is actually selling (which as fun as it sounds, doesn't seem likely at all) I'd hope whoever would buy it would stop making new Star Wars content entirely for 15-20 years. Focus on finding new young independent filmmakers with original ideas.

* Logically I understand that this is extremely unlikely.

Nobody buys billion-dollar franchises to mothball them. The only way SW might get any rest is if Disney keeps it.

As I understand it (not much), Hulu is way overvalued in the bill that Disney owes. They may try to get it reduced in court. It wouldn't get Disney out of financial trouble but it's another wrinkle in the story.

Disney owns tons of assets. Stuff that we recognize like LFL or theme parks won't even be near the top of the list of things they would sell for cash. The question is how deep they have to cut this time. And if they dump LFL then it won't be over the Hulu deal alone. The devalued condition of LFL would be a big factor too.

Either way, the Kennedy era of LFL is probably over. The mainstream press is finally starting to be openly critical of her, and that means Disney/Iger is finally allowing it. Any other owner who takes posession of LFL would almost certainly dump her too. I don't know how in the hell she kept the job up to now but Indy#5 looks like the breaking point. If Disney wants a woman in charge of LFL then they could hire a different one who won't lose their money.


(If Kennedy gets her contract renewed after Indy#5 loses money? Okay, I give up. It's conspiracy time. She's protected by the Woke agenda that is taking over America to outlaw testosterone. She has records of other Hollywood bigwigs going to Epstein island. She's one of the Freemasons. She owns a pizza parlor in Washington DC with a dungeon in the basement. She's one of the lizard people who rule the world from underground fortresses. Whatever. There has to be some behind-the-scenes factor.)

I'll believe Disney is selling LucasFilm at about the same time Kathleen Kennedy gets fired. There have been rumors of her getting fired from almost before the ink was dry on the contract to sell LucasFilm to Disney and it hasn't happened yet. But all of the fanboys are salivating over the prospect of her being canned.

While Kathleen is know for inserting her opinion, whether warranted or not, I believe Ron is correct regarding the extent of her roll as a Producer on any film. I'm sure it's contractual and while she may be skilled in pulling together a budget for a film, being married to Frank Marshall and associated with Speilberg and Lucas certianly must make the process easier. It's my opinion that a Producer, and even more so an Executive Producer, are the two least critical positions on any production. Howard Kazanjian's book had a lot of insight on how she operated going all the way back to when she was Millius's assistant.
 
Another thing to consider. Even if Lucasfilm projects continue fail. Disney will probably never sell. They wouldn't want to give up on the licensing rights. They'll keep pumping out OT, PT, and TCW merchandise. Plus they still have the profits from the EU books. (Which I understand often sell better then the new books.)
