Disney could sell Lucasfilm ?

Oh no, look out a black mermaid!

The Little Mermaid "controversy" is absurd. The trailer looked just like any of the other live action remakes they've done in recent years and when it comes to Disney classic fairy tales, casting is far less a concern to me because it's their own brand.

I have no strong feelings about the casting of Little Mermaid. I'm an adult and not the target audience. The film was not made for me.

But what is interesting is today is TLM's 18th day in release and its made only $232m domestic.

Besides the second Spiderverse film and it's huge box office win there's the new Transformers opening strong. These two features are pushing Mermaid into 3rd place before this weekend's The Flash knocks it down another notch.

With the name recognition of Little Mermaid Disney thought this would be a Billion dollar film. Instead it will be lucky to break even before it goes to video.

That is a really great point Joek3rr!!! Plus the whole "Too big to fail" thinking. I agree with what Scourgious said as well.

the WHOLE fan base needs this extended period of time of rest as well. I grew up farming and i gotta tell you...you have to rotate crops and give your land some much needed rest in order for it to keep producing good fruit. I think know is the time for that rest.

But the brings up a point... why would ANYONE (other than Lucas) buy the rights to Lucasfilm/Star Wars/ Indiana Jones et. al., and NOT use it? Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't.

If you're a smart business, you remain as apolitical as possible. This is why things like Identity Politics and controversy in general should have no place in mainstream films.

I hope they can return to their former glory. I sincerely do. Whatever the eventual outcome, it's clear the tides are shifting and I hope it's for the better.

Quote of the week. You sir, win the Internet.

They wouldn't and that's the point that i agreed with, with the other two i quoted. Which is why i hope( the current regime)fails and fails miserably so we can finally get some rest. I think deep down we all know Lucas is the only one who could buy it back but won't...That Star Wars is going to be milked to death producing mediocre at best material. I'm ready for a long awaited rest of anything Star Wars or Indiana Jones...they can over saturate Marvel for all i care because i could care less about it. They are making more money with that anyways. I have a hard time believing after building these theme parks that all of a sudden they get retconned to Marvel Theme parks which will cost even more money for them. As my mother used to say to me..."You've made your bed, now lay in it". Maybe Elon Musk will buy Lucasfilm...who knows...lol, jk

**So there is no confusion, i do not wish for individual people to fail but the influences behind them that is motivating the current leadership at Lucasfilm to fail. To use their quote, "Failure is the best teacher" so let's see if they can swallow their own medicine...as Psab said and i agree, i think all of us want to see a "return to glory" but that unfortunately can't happen without a fall or a change of mind.

I don't think it will break even. It's at 422 million WW so far, and I dont think it was another 140 million more left in the tank to break the 560 million threshold experts say it needs for a break-even scenario.

They made Andor… the best Star Wars since the OT. No Lucas… and in no way what Lucas would have done.

To paraphrase Mrs. Garret…

*cue music*

You take the Andor, You Take the The Rise of Skywalker, you take them bothand there you have the Wars in the Stars….The Wars in the Stars

And that song is obviously a remix of…

You take the Empire Strikes Back, you take the Battle for Endor, you take em bith and there you have…

I don’t know where I’m going with this. Disney made Andor. Disney made my fave Star Wars. I didn’t watch the other stuff or just shrugged it off and watched Succession through again.

I feel Super Mario Bros. and Star Wars have a lot in common in my mind lately...There are a lot of question marks...people high on mushrooms...in the clouds...lots of coins to collect...people hitting their heads repeatedly...trying to get 1UPs...and ultimately trying to defeat another famous KK "King Koopa"...(sorry Kathleen) from flooding the land with more crap. I could clearly in my mind hear Han Solo saying, "Listen kid...It's gonna take some skilled plumbers to clean up all this mess, Hokey fireballs and ancient plungers are no match for a Crap blaster at your side, kid.” – ...

I haven't bought a DVD/Blu-Ray in a while but I picked up the new SMB DVD/Blu-Ray/Digital download today at Wally-World. Took my kids to see it in theaters 2 months ago and we liked it (first time back in a theater in 3 years). So I'm voting with my wallet. I don't care that it's an Illumination/Universal product.

Disney, please make more apolitical family fare. SMB toed the line (at the insistence of Nintendo) to NOT make Princess Peach a radical Mary-Sue. She was Competent, Smart, and Caring in the film (really, NOT the typical Peach damsel in distress from the Mario video games).

Well, Disney's next offering is Haunted Mansion. Who knows how that will do?

Agree totally
I actually loved the Super Mario Movie...it was great...super funny...hit on some good notes
my post wasn't a negative on SMB , just drawing parallels...lol. You' all must forgive me. I've been in intense pain trying to heal to no avail so i've spent a lot of time on here and try to overcome pain with humor...not saying its working very well on either level.

Super Mario Brothers was fun but entirely forgettable. I've never been into video games so I don't have much nostalgia for them. I was able to spot the references to the games but I couldn't tell you what exactly they were recalling. What I did enjoy was how broadly appealed to everyone and just wanted to entertain people. No overt messaging that I could sense.

As far as disney star wars has been kicked into the dirt live action wise, it's still making money outside of that live action medium. As far as how Disney LFL is being and has been run into the dirt at every turn boggles the mind. Let's see where things are at this time next year. I'll go out on a limb, three new star wars films will be announced that actually get made (and fans are confused as these films are good), all current live action streaming series' are either pulled or have half a season to end, New live action streaming series are announced that fans can get behind, on another note Marvel will do a complete 180 and feature brutal new theatrical action hero content for adults while steaming will feature more young adult and preteen oriented content.

Of course that would mean in one years time new leadership would be had all around. Drastic times call for drastic measures. At this point there is no middle ground for disney to balance on to get the fan base back. DC has gone this route. All or nothing.

Nine days have passed. We've had two new films announced, a mass of films and content have been pushed back or delayed and today Disney's CFO stepped down. Irony is in Raiders Indy was literally grasping at straw trying to keep from falling into the pit having prior passed the whip onto another person. Prolific all around.

Why would Disney sell Lucasfilm? What would replace it? Tron? I like Tron, but there’s a reason why they went out of their way to buy LFL. And who would the buyer be? Nickelodeon? All those episodes of SpongeBob are probably worth less than a down payment on Star Wars. Also, Disney can’t sell yet, until they obliterate the last LFL project- Howard the duck.

And while Kennedy deserves blame for mismanagement, didn’t Iger shoulder some of the blame? I’m sure he’s downplaying how involved he was. Let’s remember that kennedy’s hits were really based on the creators of those IPs, and not on her “otherworldly” management skills. Without the creative sources, there’s only so much kennedy can contribute. She seems more like a quarterback, who is a solid game manager, but lacks actual talent to drive her team to the playoffs. So I can’t completely blame her. Seems like she was installed in a position which required a genius creative mind as well.
Another factor to consider is that previously at LFL, she probably only really answered to George or to Spielberg for Indy. She probably now has several meddling bosses, including Iger whose primary goals are maximizing profit and not necessarily creating the best product. He can’t prioritize the latter anyway, b/c he oversees a public company where profits are the ultimate goal. That said, he needs to stop meddling with LFL. So ultimately, I blame Kennedy, but we can’t give Iger a pass. He’s the boss. He deserves an equal, if not greater, amount of blame. He’s an equally crappy manager b/c he shouldn’t be providing advice when his advice is the reverse Midas touch.

Indy probably gets a big 2nd-week dive unless the movie is better than we all suspect.

But the audience for the movie is older than most summer tentpoles. That throws monkey wrenches into it.

It will suck, just like everything else they do.
I laughed so hard at this. I have been so grumpy today and just unleashed on several stupid committees at work. I get on here and everyone is getting along even when they have a difference of opinion and I started to feel like maybe I am just too grumpy.... and then this. Thank you.

OK, edit added... So today some folks wanted to know how to print some web based forms. I said my guess was it would be the same cro-mag team that can't put down their chisels and learn to use a computer. Mind you, they are under 50, so this is not an age issue. It is a direct result of incapable and inept people not getting fired so why change? So, actually this comment by Cephus is a lot deeper than first glance because it is the same thing, inept people not fired so why would we expect them to change. It will suck because they suck and they love what they are doing and have no intention to stop sucking. They think you, the audience, are the ones that are wrong. They don't intend to write something you like and they won't. They will just leech this fanbase dry of any hope.
