Seeing them all together again makes me think that the whole “Ewan chooses his saber” bit might have just been done for the sake of publicity. Because the Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan sabers are the clear standouts of the batch.

I personally think that's the case AND they're the most attractive out of all of them. The rest were bland

The fact that there's a mix and match of parts (particularly the pseudo-Maul design) lends credence to this. The Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are both unique and both standouts.

I always kind of thought that was unbelievable. They were the two most important Jedi in that movie, and they just randomly picked the best designed sabers which obviously had the most money invested in the designs? Everything else was a "Clan" saber... yeah, I don't believe they would have let them use the less impressive generic designs.

There’s also that teensy little detail in the footage of Ewan and the saber box: all of the other sabers are painted resin with metal endcaps, while the Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are the metal heroes.

Either the deck was stacked, or the footage was staged for publicity.
