Obi Wan ANH hilt fate discussion

Can I just say - I’ve owned two boosters now, both variants without the flash hiders and just the nut. Both nuts could never come off.

So whilst I probably agree they just cut the flash hider in half IF it was a variant with a flash hider.

It’s also equally possible they had a ‘nut only’ version and packed it out in a different way.

Enjoyed reading through this thread. I wouldn't have seen it had I not been mentioned as I don't get nearly as much time as I'd like to actually participate in these discussions.

I thought I'd just throw in my 2 cents though.

The flash hider idea is certainly not mine, as mentioned. I was happy to incorporate it in to the design though for a couple of reasons.

In the absence of anything definitive, I loved the idea of using a real world part as the spacer. Especially one that was literally connected to one of the other parts.

I found that when it was cut down to the required length, it did indeed sit perfectly inside the base of the grenade. So, if it wasn't the actual method used, it is certainly a convenient one for those who have this version.

I'm not 100% convinced either, but I am fond of it as a possible solution.

One other thing I wanted to mention with regards to the "two separate hilts" debate.

As part of my Obi Wan Project, I did reference real parts originally, but there is a great deal of variation in these. Particularly the Hales grenades.

So, after referencing these, I then fine tuned my models to the actual prop references. This is where I came across something interesting...

The standard, more common threading on the grenade neck dose NOT fit inside the dimensions of the grenade. The sloping part has an incline which is too steep.

It was brought to my attention that there IS a less common variant with a smaller base to the brass neck section. I concluded that the grenade on the actual Chronicles prop must have been this variant. The dimensions of the larger, standard thread simply do not fit within the diameter at that end of the grenade.

What this means is that the threads at each end would not have been interchangeable. An interesting quirk. The ramifications of this are that the Tunisia hilt is more likely to have incorporated a different grenade. Either the flat ended version, or a different one that could be flipped.

Just an additional piece of information to support the idea that it was not constructed from the same parts.

Also, as Chris has already said, details present in the Chronicles photos can be seen in the on-set Death Star photos, as well as in frames from the final cut of the movie. The mark on the emitter as well as various clamp details can be cross referenced.

Anyway, just thought I'd add what I can to the discussion. It's nice to see that these things are still discussed, and whilst I'm not always able to participate, I still enjoy lurking! :D
