Dear Santa, Please bring me this 3D printer for Christmas!

Legacy Effects has a printer like this (don't think it is this exact model) that does multiple materials. The last time we were there, they showed us a sample of what it can create in a single object and it is absolutely astounding. I believe this tech is the future, not just for props, but for everything. I believe, in time, these type devices will essentially become our "replicators" from Star Trek and instead of purchasing items, you will simply purchase the plans to print it and print your own at home, much like we do with software.

Oh, totally.
But for now, I'd just settle for a 3D printer that squirts out a moderate sized grey plastic object within my price range. :lol

Maker magazine just did a very good review of several affordable 3d printers. The cheapest was around 399 i think.

That's a cute little printer. ;) lol Kidding but not that big really compared to the competition.

Until we run out of plastic that is... :lol

Aren't there companies out there that offer 3D printing services so you don't have to own your own machine?

Yep. In the same way you can get things printed at Staples if you don't have a printer.

If you're using it a lot though it makes financial sense to own your own equipment. Especially as they become more affordable.

Funny you should mention Staples as they will be offering 3d printing services soon. You order your print after uploading your file to their site and you pick it up at your nearest store later that day or the next. Looking forward to that availability and convenience!

Check out some of the links on my CNC & 3D PRINTING pintrest page for several examples/options.

Planning on building one myself soon. :cool

The desktop models range from around $400 to $2,000
I'm currently building a Mendel Prusa which should end up costing between $600-$700

But it would be awesome to have an objet that can print in multiple materials during the same print.
