Got my Acreation PL replacement decals yesterday and they look grand. Steve, if you are completed I wish you would post a few more beauty shots. Your build is fantastic and as I said before it LOOKs like the CG version (and I mean that it is so perfect is looks like a computer did it). Kudos!!!!

I have had them for a few days now. Been working doing a CGI job. Now it's finished and back to finishing the NX Monday.

Thanks for the kind words!

Steve

My opinion is that the type of model used depends on what needs to be filmed. A slow star cruiser just passing slowly through the galaxy you dont need CGI, a physical model would do just fine. Most of Trek could still run fine with physical models, but if you're going to do a massive aerial or stellar dogfight between dozens of fighters then CGI would be the best medium. Too many directors lean towards ALL CGI, and some are too stubborn about physical models that they ignore the benefits of CGI. Its just like matte paintings on glass plates are going the way of the dinosaur, with CGI digital sets replacing them. Thats awesome for city scapes or skyscapes with lots of aerial traffic or things going on. But if you want to make a fake lunar landscape, just have a painting made. I think many times, depending on the artist, a matte painting can look more real than CGI. I was just at my neighbors and Under Siege 2 was on, and they relied so heavily on using blue & green screen, and it looked SO fake, but DP's have been shooting the same type of sequences using camera angle tricks and are way more successful with them. It just comes down to there's always a proper tool for a specific job, and it can be done with other tools, such as using a dremel to mount some styrene rod as a poor man's lathe, but you know whats a better lathe? A LATHE. :D

Uhh, you do realize CGI is done by humans, right? Computers are merely the tools they use. Saying a computer did CGI is like saying Leonardo da Vinci's brushes painted the Mona Lisa.

But I understand your point, and I agree; Steve's build-up is one of very few I've seen that actually looks like the CG ship in the series.

Ha ha, VERY well put! Very well indeed!:thumbsup
I'd never thought of it in those terms.

Still, a physical model allows for more imperfections in filming & texture that imbue a greater sense of realism IMO. Just look at Lucas' CGI X-Wing shots in SW vs. the real thing. To be fair though, some of the 'real' shots were lacking due to photography & limited budget.
So, yeah, the right tool for the moment.
It's all a kind of magic.:love

I spent 9 hours today putting on Rob's new decal for this build. I still have the bottom to do but it's not as hard as the top or as many decals.

The decals are fantastic. Easy to work with just like his Aztecs. No rips no tears and no disintegration! Excellent! Rob is a life saver once again. They are so thin when they set you can't see the edges.

The hardest part was those millions of little dots. My eyes hurt. As for the very small dots the instructions give such a vague idea as to where they go I don't think they will get used. Doug's renders didn't help either. I just can't see their locations.

More tomorrow.

Look close and the more you look the more you see. Everyone of those little

specks were put on one at a time!

Rob thanks Doug didn't send me one that big of the top. Big help. Back to it. They all have to be on and dry before I can do the bottom tomorrow.

I can see clearly now the....

Wow, been following the progress and I have to say that is one stunning model Steve and the work looks painstaking, but hell definitely shows in the love of the piece. Look forward to seeing her completed.

Thanks guys.

Well I got them all on. Over 80 hours to place them all including the Aztecs.

Tomorrow I'll clear coat her again. Thursday she gets a slight airbrushed weathering and battle rash paint job and we can call it done.
