Custom Batsuit - first WIP ever

OK everyone, I have an update!

So I've finished shaping the shoulders, biceps and chest armour to my body, and I'm incredibly excited about it.

Here are some pictures:

The shoulders turned out perfect, I made side pieces to cover the seams because of the way I cut them to curve. I'm also thinking of putting some bat symbols on the shoulder pieces just for fun, so I created a template for it, what do you guys think?

I'm not sure if it's overkill haha, but I think it looks cool...

So yeah, that's where I'm up to.

I realised I haven't made any templates for the side and neck straps that will join the chest armour to the back armour, so that and the lower back, ribs and extra bits will be my next step.

I've needed to order more thermoplastic too because I ran out. So I need to wait for that to arrive.

My plan now is to use heavy duty snaps to attach each section of the armour to the fabric components. My original plan was velcro and a fabric wrap around my midsection but now I'm thinking of using a black singlet I've had for a while as it's a nice texture and fits me well. It's really good quality fabric too, so it'll be sturdy, plus if I use snaps instead of velcro the whole piece will be much stronger.

I'm still trying to figure out how to attach the arm pieces to each other, I tried making the whole thing one piece but I got the measurements wrong and it didn't keep it's shape at all, so now I've just got separate pieces for the bicep and tricep plates and I'm thinking of using black elastic straps to join them but I'm not sure if that will work or if it'll look good.

Anyway, let me know what you think everyone, any advice or constructive criticism is more than welcome!

Awesome bro!!! Where and what size foam did you use? I'm about to start tonight although I do not have a bat symbol template. I've printed every thing right off my galaxy which is pretty cool to since my computer is down

Do you have an arkham origins symbol? Or can you tell me how I could get one and what size to resize it at? I'm lost lol here's my template

Thanks!

I'm using thermoplastic, it's quite different to foam, I've never used foam before so I wouldn't be able to help with advice about foam builds. There are plenty of people on the forums who build with it though so you'll definitely be able to get heaps of help if you ask around a bit.

It's awesome that you're getting started on a build though, good luck!

There ya go, and keep up the good work Athanasius ! I had to abandon my AO due to priorities, but I'm curious to see your custom build :thumbsup
Thanks teragon!

It sucks that you had to stop, I hope it's nothing serious.

I'm excited to see if I can pull this build off, there are still a few things I'm not sure how to do so we'll see how it goes haha.

This thread and your hard work make me want to get started on a bat suit build. Alas I'm refurbbishing my garage at the moment so can't do anything large scale.
Keep up the great work,

Hey everyone,

I haven't done too much but I thought I'd post an update anyway.

So I've added small bat symbols to the shoulder armour, and I'm really pleased with how it looks!

I've also shaped the first bat symbol for the chest:

Bat Symbol 01.JPGBat Symbol 02.JPG

It fits well, but as you can see it's a bit crooked on the chest:

Chest 01.JPGChest 02.JPGChest 03.JPG

It's not horrible, but it's noticeable to me. It's just to do with placement of the magnets though, so it's something I can fix with a second attempt.

I ordered more wonderflex and received that in the mail yesterday so that's awesome. I've also ordered a bunch of heavy duty snaps to attach the armour to the fabric bits of the suit.

I've never done this before so before I actually do anything more (in terms of fitting the armour) I'm going to be doing a boatload of measuring and planning and double checking.

So that's what I've done so far, my next step is refining the templates for the back armour and ribs, and figuring out the straps that connect the chest to the back.

Let me know what you all think, thanks for checking this thread out!

You're doing some cool work there. Here's my two cents on some things you're trying to figure out:

I'm assuming you mean to attach the armor to the under suit fabric. In my experience, if there's enough armor pieces, you don't have to attach any of them to the under suit itself. You can rivet or button snap the pieces together with properly measured out elastic or adjustable if you want to go a step further. Of course you may not want to go this way but I thought I'd just throw it out there in case you wanted to give it a shot. This could help in your ideas of having a more customizable suit. Here's a couple pictures to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

I wouldn't sweat it too much. If you're doing it on a black under suit, it will pretty much disappear. If you're doing it over a gray under suit, break up the gray a little bit.

Again this is just my two cents. Do what's best for you.

Keep it up!

Hey man your sit looks awesome! Is that eva foam ? Any templates or build thread?

This is some great advice man, thanks for that!

My only reason for wanting to attach the armour piece separately onto the fabric is that I figured it would give me greater flexibility which is my main concern.

How's the flexibility in the suit you've shown here? It looks amazing.

Thanks again for your help!

Flexibility is good. I'm not sure how it would compare to a suit where the armor is attached to the under suit itself as this has been the main way I've done my suits. I'm assuming it would be roughly the same. But can't say for sure.

Here's one of tecnoninja's bat suits. In it it looks like he used black elastic or some other similar black material to attached the bicep and tricep armor over a gray suit. Take a look. One of the pics has a pretty good shot of the side of the arm.

I hope this helps in figuring out if you think you'd like the look or not.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I'm hoping for with the biceps/triceps armour, I'll use those images for reference while I'm figuring it out.

That Batsuit looks amazing!

Hey Weapon,

I've been thinking about this...

You mean attach button snaps to the armour and elastic and then run the elastic between the armour pieces so the armour is attached directly to the elastic?

So with elastic, installing snaps won't tear it or make it easier to break when it stretches or anything? I'll know soon enough once I've received my snaps coz I've already got some black elastic...

But if that works, I think that'll be my method, because then I don't have to ruin any clothes and elastic is really cheap and easy to find.

I was just a bit worried about installing snaps directly onto elastic, but that's because to be honest I don't even know how the snaps are installed haha :\

I was also just worried about the visibility of the elastic straps between the armour plates, as I'd like a bit of spacing between them, so I wasn't sure if it would look ok having elastic straps running between every piece of the armour...

Thanks heaps though, you've helped me a lot!

I've never had a problem with elastic tearing or breaking. The biggest challenge I've come across with elastic is if you try and rivet it to a piece or use chicago screws to attach it. It stretches so much, it will stretch right over the head of the rivet or chicago screw. Unless you put an eyelet and washer on the elastic....

If that doesn't make sense or you're curious how I do the riveting and Chicago screws, let me know.

With snaps though, you don't have the issue of the elastic stretching and coming up over the head of the snap given the nature of how snaps work. The button head of the snap bites down in the material it's being attached to.

I'd recommend getting some hole punches if you don't have any.

And test it out before you commit it to finished pieces!! :)

Awesome, thanks so much for your help!

I'm definitely using snaps instead of rivets though, so that's all good. :)

I've got plenty of elastic and it's cheap and easy to find so I'll definitely test the snaps and all that on a scrap first.

With the armour side though, do you think I could super glue the other side of the snaps onto the back of the armour pieces, or do I need to install them properly?

Coz I know the armour from Origins has rivets and such, but I'm going for more of a clean, non riveted look :|

Thanks again!
