Unlimited Run Cobra Commander helmet: GI Joe Retaliation

Thanks for the Update and The Picture! As always Were so lucky We have somone so talented making this possible!

Thanks Oz!

For those of you waiting on helmets, I have a conundrum that I've been fighting with for a couple of weeks and I think it's better if I leave it up to each of you individually.

Spray chroming the visors works well, as you've seen, but I've been bothered by how delicate the finish is. Basically you just can't touch it without leaving marks and it's near impossible to touch up after the fact. The obvious answer is to add a clear coat on top of the chrome to protect it, but no matter which type of clear that I use, I wind up with having to sacrifice something. Either the clear coat dulls the chrome from the outside or it fogs visibility from the inside.

My guess is that most (if not all) will want to err on the side of keeping the chrome reflective but I felt it best to let you weigh in.

The other option would be sandwich the chrome between 2 pieces of clear

"Why not use reflective window tint."

Window tint won't lay flat against a shape this complex.

"The other option would be sandwich the chrome between 2 pieces of clear"

That however may work. I'll test it this weekend.

I am possibly A little confused but guessing the one on left is without protection and the one on the right is protected?

I am very curious about and hopeful about sandwich Idea. As this is what looks like the original movie version had done to it.
Yet it also appears to have the same finish as one on the right that is dulled.

Thanks Agojclayman99

THANKS to Oz as Well! Another reason To be thankful someone as professional as You are doing this job!

I will be wearing mine in costume, so a slightly dull finish to me is not a huge deal if that is best way to go about it, as in the movie the visor was not actually mirrored like you see with other fan made cobra helmets that typically use window tinting, so in a way I think it's ok. The more metallic mirror finish looks cool as heck though. I can go either way

Oz,
First, i appreciate the consideration of you asking our opinion. Thanks, sir!

I would prefer to keep clear vision in my faceplate.
BUT, if the clearcoat helps keep the chrome paint on the faceplate in better condition from smudges and microscratches. Then i would go with clearcoat then.

I know that's not really a definitive answer but i hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks for the update Oz. As mine will be used as part of a costume, & will be being handled frequently, whatever option is needed to protect the finish will be what I want. I do like the mirrored finish better, but am willing to sacrifice that look for better protection of the finish when handling. If the sandwich method you're experimenting with works out, that will be great, but if it doesn't work out, I'm willing to sacrifice for a slightly dulled finish to be able to handle it without risking damage to the visors finish. I look forward to continued updates! Thanks for keeping us informed! :cool

All three have a clear coat. One is an acrylic, one is lacquer, and the third is the automotive clear. Visibility with the auto clear is the same as no clear at all, but it dulls the chrome effect slightly. It still looks very good, IMO, it's just not as reflective. If you're good with that look, then I would recommend going that route.

I ordered a set of thinner plastic sheet yesterday for the inner shield and will get those run as soon as it arrives next week. The inner layer needs to be of a much thinner plastic to conform to the same shape on the inside.

If it doesn't work I'll take just the metal spray as mine will be for display only.

Sorry for my lack of understanding Oz :) thanks for clarification Hopefully the sandwich method goes well! Thanks for taking this extra step! If it doesn't work then I guess Auto clear is the most protective of the 3 and like someone said already looks the most movie accurate! Really hoping the sandwich Idea works though as no matter which finish I am guessing the sandwich Idea would provide more protection to the clear coat? Or is that protection not needed? Again OZ thanks for giving us insight and being willing to include is in the process!

I have changed my mind. I guess if the sandwich method doesn't work the auto clear is fine for me as well
