Building X-Wing 1/24 : Help!!

As I gear up for my first studio scale project, I'm building an AMT Pro-Shop kit (re-building is more accurate.).

Its cans look to short, but if I do it as R2, it may be just about right...

I believe these are the correct heatsinks. Can anyone confirm?

I would not mind getting a set of these as well. My next X-Wing I want to use some original parts on for an Ultimate version for myself.

Yes, those are the ones.

I'm in the process of defining the fuselage in CAD, referencing the Fine Molds kit, CC kit, Estes Maxi-Brute. My plan is to ultimately CNC or SLA the parts. I'm interested in opinions regarding the ledge between the upper and lower fuselage. All the reference kits define this as a horizontal, flat to the floor feature. But in comparing my CAD model to photo references (I'm matching perspective of my CAD model with the photos), I have to wonder if it should actually be angled upward (see picture). It's the only way I can get the two to match. I know the full size props angled this ledge, but does anyone know if the SS models did as well?

Thanks,

I doubt it was angled due to the way they were constructed. The top half sat on the bottom half, the ledge just being the thickness of that part of the hull.

I'd say angled. I figure that Jay is probably right; the raw bottom half had a flat ledge, but they put a ton of filler along that seam and smoothed it off to create an angled ledge.

I was thinking putty as well which might account for the inconsistency I see from model to model. Red two for instance appears to have a more prominent angle versus red three.

Another subtle detail I'm trying to figure out is the break between the front and back canopy. I've always assumed it was perpindicular to the fuselage ledge (as seen from side view), and that's how the Fine Molds kit defines it (which I'm finding to be less and less accurate than I'd hoped, and had been led to believe.). But to make it work in my CAD model, I'm finding that it needs to be angled slightly forward. It's difficult to prove conclusively in photographs because you need to have a photo precisely taken from the side, but I have a couple of shots that look as if I'm correct. Any thoughts?

why spend money on the heat sinks. I cast up a tone of them for use witrh my own projects but it will be some time before I get to them so if anyone is interested in a free set give me a shout.

I've seen several posts claiming that the cannon bodies are built from stock plastic tubing. I'd agree the cylinder surrounding the heat sink and the tubes from the main body to the tip are stock, but I'm not so sure about the main body. A 3/4 inch OD tube looks pretty good, but the detailing on it seems too delicate for the original modelers to have spent the time building. Am I off the mark here, or does anyone else think it may come from a donor kit?

Been reading and re-reading this thread for the last week. Just acquired Salzo's kit (CC). Waiting on the new ILM book to be released.

Did ANYBODY ever finish a kit-bashed version??? Sounds like Darkside72 may have....? Anyone else? Treadwell? Miniaturizer? I'd love to see some pics of a REAL replica.

How about wings? Is anything definitive known about the internal armature or motors used for the Hero?

Thanks to all of the talented folks who made this a thoroughly enjoyable read.
