Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Ooohhh, sexy neck Julien, looks perfect as always!. Man I hope some day to see this monster in person and of course you too J lol!:lol
Have you managed to ID all the rest of the bridge and neck area?.
Stu

Not all the parts Stu, but we're pretty close ! Some pics of the facia, very soon ! :)

Awesome Julien, just wow is all I can say mate!. Are you going to make some miniature garbage as well lol!.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks Stu ;)

No garbage, no mini S1 ! :lol

Guys, I will work in the next few weeks on the superstructures, and I really need a bunch of Revell USS Franklin/Coral Sea/Midway decks... If you have any you would like to sell, please let me know, thanks !

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

That looks...... (I just can't find the words) :eek

.....inspirational, awesome, mind-blowing, great, phenominal, superb,..... all of these words cannot describe the work you're doing Julien.

Keep up the great work!:thumbsup

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks Jay for the kind words :)

I glued some more details that I ID'd today on the back of the neck

Ive also scratched the top parts, not 100% accurate but it does the trick. I also added some more kitparts I found today :

Thanks for looking !

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Julien,

I'm curious, could you tell me what the height of the neck is, in centimeters?
We're working on the same section, thought I might take your height and scale it down to 1/2222 and see if I've come close to the side pieces that I've cut out of styrene.

Jay, the neck side plates are 28.8 cm tall. The back of the neck is 2" wide at the top and 3" 1/2 at the base (not the base of the kind of step at the very base of the neck)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Today I tried to find new parts on the neck sides, I found about 40, not so bad, but there are tiny :( Im still missing 3 or 4 parts but that's not too bad. I built the top of the neck, glued the tee-strips on the edges then I sprayed a coat of primer, here the pics :

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

WOW! Now that's the coolest thing I've seen here EVER!:eek Even if you "just" finish the tower it's still a monster build. Now this is the kind of thread worth following!

Incredible,

Steve.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks you for your kind words guys !

Im very close to finish the bridge and neck now. And Ive already collected all the parts (that have been ID'd) for the superstructures and hull. Now what I need is just to get my superstructures plates to be cut... hopefuly someone will be able to help me !
I also have the plexi plate for the main hulls (need to be cut, but since it's straight cut I would be able to do it by myself).

Unfortunatly some parts will be impossible to find because of the lack of reference of some areas. We can see there is a part but the pics is too fuzzy/far and it's impossible to ID so Ill have to do some artistic choice.

Would love to finish it for 2010 (30th anniversary of TESB), it will be quite hard though ! My biggest concern is where to paint it and how I would be able to move it. I would have to rent a truck probably since I cant split the hull in half !

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Skills like this is why people aren't allowed to marry cars, horses and scale models. :love

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Incredible is all I can say Julien, it's just an amazing piece of work, even as a stand alone prop, but man I'm sooooo looking forward to seeing this progress into the full deal!. Your attention to even the smallest part placement and skill in glueing/aligning the parts is just phenomenal J, you really are a true artist dude!. It's works like these that keep me enthused to carry on with my own works, so many thanks!.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

That's incredible!:eek

I love how the pieces, of this version of the star destroyer specifically, are so artfully arranged. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks for your comments fellas,
I reckon that all those greeblies are catching the eye and are really pleasant to see with some good lighting ! From a certain distance, it looks very mechanical and real. I do prefer the ISD from TESB too Scott, Maybe because TESB was the first SW movie I saw, but I think it's because of the details. I think they did the best detailing job ever on a large capital ship model. I dont like so much the work they did on the Super Star Destroyer (but they built it in 5 weeks, that's a good excuse !).

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks for your support guys !

Today, I've started the domes. Well I did just one half, 3 more to build lol
Thanks to Scratchy (Jay) to helped me on that with his files (I did some modifications to them, gonna send them to you Jay). He had a great idea to build one half with only one piece of styrene. Easy and precise (well easy at studio scale, not easy at the scale he's doing his ISD :lol).

Here's the first result, took me 3 hours (needs to be sanded) :

I used very thin styrene (0.3mm), I will do some internal ribs to give it rigidity and the correct shape then I will pour resin once the 2 halves are glued together, it will be very strong. I also build a rotocasting machine today, this way I will be able to get hollow domes for weight purpose...
