Building my own Batcave -- transformation vid 10-7-11

Re: Building my own Batcave UPDATED 6/5/11 [PIC HEAVY]

I think you might want to do more than just foam board on the windows. Besides the light issue, I would be concerned about condensation accumulating on the windows and wreaking havoc on the monitor's electronics.

I actually already put that plastic that you put on windows in the winter to block the cold, so that should keep the moisture away as well. Double-layered!

Re: Building my own Batcave UPDATED 6/5/11 [PIC HEAVY]

put 2x4s across the top and bottom or sides of the window, make two wedges out of plywood to the angle you want, secure to the 2x4s with angle iron, cover with a sheet of plywood, attach TV bracket or monitor.

depending on the weight, you may want to reinforce the wedges along the edge that will hold the TV with either angle iron or 2x4s.

should work :thumbsup

That was a great idea! I finished cutting, prepping, and painting this mounting system tonight, will put it up as soon as I get the foam board put in the windows to block out the light.

Thanks for the great idea metrosonus!!

Here is your idea, with its paint drying ...

Don't forget- you need a giant penny, a giant joker card, and a robot T-Rex.

You're right! I've actually been shopping around for a giant penny, but so far all I can find are these smaller ones ... a bit bigger than a dime, and only worth 1 cent!! :lol

love the progress on this, will b watching with interest for sure..!

Looking good.

On the fire proofing front it is easy to get hold of a spray on retardent that does not affect the colour of the item you are spraying. Best way to find one is to contact a local theatre/film hire as they tend to supply the stuff cheaply. Otherwise contact a local theatre and see where they get it from.

Batcave flooded last night after a crazy rainstorm here in Denver. The water well filled up and ugh. I opened up the foam on that wall and made holes all in the drywall, got all the water up, then had fans and heaters in the room for 24 hrs. Made sure there was no possibility of mold amd made sure inside of wall was all dry again. Luckily, no damage to the drywall or even the wall covering, was able to get both dried out quickly. Just repainted here and there and Good as new!

But you can see how much water there was.

We moved into this house about 8 months ago and are learning about all its weaknesses that the previous owners never addressed. Now I get to take care of them all since I am not like that at all. Did a major upgrade to the rain mitigation capacity of the house today and it handled the big rainstorm today like a champ!

I also hung up the dual monitor assembly, and I think it looks freakin awesome. I just need to get an adapter so I can have both going at once.

Did I mention I got 2 monitors, cables, USB keyboard and mouse, and 2006-era laptop all for FREE by just asking people if they had old junk lying around? I'm pretty happy about that. Saved lots of $$$$ on the bat computer setup.

Sad to hear about the flooding, but congrats on the free stuff!

My mom and aunt came in from out of town and wanted to see the batcave, so I showed them and of course they were impressed (and accepting of my "hobby"). I put Batman in there to see what he looked like, so here's just a quick pic with the batsuit in the room. Looks freakin' awesome!

WOW, man... All that water would have me freaking like nobody's business... It's good that you've got it all under control, though. :unsure

An update! I finally was able to find some floor paint at a local hardware store. The painter there said that she could mix any color into the paint, so of course I said "BLACK BLACK!"

I wasn't going to paint the floor as I really liked the way the paint overspray looked on the floor after painting the walls. After working in the room though I noticed that that paint rubs off on my feet and makes the floor difficult to keep clean.

So, painted the floor. The gallon of paint was only $26 and I probably only used a little over a quart of it! The stuff is really nice because unlike wall paint, it spreads itself out really easily. I was able to paint the whole floor in less than 10 minutes. After I let it dry for about 6 hours, I did a second coat and let that dry for a day.

After that, I put up a floating shelf that will act as my floating desk in the room. I put it up a little lower than my shoulders, which is high I know. The plan is to get a stool that sits high as well -- I just liked the PC that high up for some reason I dunno. I think it looks good though. I STILL need to get the adapter for the 2nd screen.

Finally last night I moved my stuff back in. I have some other costume stuff and resins, clay, sandpaper etc but I don't want that stuff in here because it doesn't look very cool! But I did move back in my suits to display and my few bat props. I think it looks pretty damn awesome! Even though Batman (and his stuff) aren't the center of attention, it still has the feel that I was going for.

Check it out:

My wife said OK to buying the couch for me for my birthday, but that is a month from today so I will have to wait.

Question: Do you think I should put glass shelves and lighting for some display items in that window opening in the middle? That's my plan at this point. OR, I could still mount the TV over it. What are some other ideas?

Next steps are:

> finding a Captain America poster to replace that Iron Man one since that's my next suit

> buy the USB to VGA adapter for the monitors

> get glass shelves and down lighting for that window opening right there in the middle (maybe)

> seal the bottom of the doorway where some light gets through (not pictured)

> start pricing out HDTVs and wall mounts

> figure out cool-looking way to mount Xbox 360

And I'm sure there are a lot more things I haven't thought of yet.

Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions!
