Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka; Pep and 3D print (Pic Heavy)

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Alright, im back. Like I said last night, i had more to share, so here it is. While I was waiting for some fiberglassed parts to cure, I was tinkering with some electronics.
I focused mostly on the chest and the illumination lights found all over its body. I started with the 4 blue lights between the red lights and the opening chest plates. Looking at it the first time, I thought they were just light bars, but in one scene in the movie, we got to see it closer up, and it turns out theyre made up of multiple lights. 32 red lights, 8 per section make up the red lights. The blue lights above them make up of 12 blue, 3 per section.

I don't have that many LED's available or the electronic no how to wire that many LED's together, so im going to have to improv a little bit.

I came up with these basic circuits after some tinkering.
1407831051475.8.jpg
1407830933625.7.jpg
For the blue lights, I used 8 individual 5mm blue LED's wired in both series and parallel. 4 for one side, and 4 for the other powered by a 9V battery.

Here is how it looks
1407830080507.1.jpg

And when turned on...
1407830094429.2.jpg

Now for the wing. This was a trickier circuit for me to make. It uses some series and parallel, also powered by a 9V battery
1407830556175.3.jpg

And when turned on...
1407830600667.4.jpg

I put the pep'd wing in there to show you guys what I mean
1407830629449.5.jpg
1407830714014.6.jpg

Now I have a question for you all. I feel like im using wrong circuitry or something because ive seen like 20 LED's powered by only 2 AA batteries. I want to do this with the illumination lights all over Striker's body and have it run off one big circuit instead of having individual circuits and batteries per body part. There is 13 red, 13 green and 8 yellow lights found on it. Anyone have some tips or suggestions?

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Not a whole lot going on with Striker today. Just prepping one of the shins for fiberglass. Hope to get some on before work. I'm not going to do the whole thing at once to reduce warping

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Got the first half of the shin glassed and I glassed the elbow piece of the forearm. Going to let it cure while I go off to work. Im going to finish the rest of the shin tomorrow, then start the other shin

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Alright, got the outside of the shin about 90% fiberglassed. I didnt finish it because I put too much catalyst in the resin and it hardened before I could use it all. Oh well, I need to finish off the resin I have anyway. Ive had that quart of it for months now and I know resin has a shelf life so Im not sure when its going to go bad.

1408126770910.5.jpg

I also glued in some supports for the blades and going to put a layer of resin on them.
1408126946967.1.jpg
1408126957502.2.jpg
1408126964620.3.jpg

And for the inside of the blades, I want to put in some expanding foam so they wont be hollow. Anyone who has worked with it, do you guys have a recommendation for some? Home Depot has a bunch of different kinds

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

I got a lot done so far! Fiberglassed all the parts that make up the sting blades and even got the top hand plate done. Did all this and its not even 2:30 pm. Im going to get the finger parts and get a layer done on them done. Then ill move on to the thigh piece, then the shin. LOL i hate fiberglassing so much

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Hey guys. Its been a long time since ive posted an update. I started college 2 weeks ago and ive been very busy. I've still made some progress on Striker since I last posted. Got some more stuff together.

First off, The sting blade parts have been coated and dried. Unfortunately they warped...some a lot more than others. Luckily i recently discovered that a hair dryer can generate enough heat to soften the resin a bit for me to reshape it. I did that on the helmet and doing it on the sting blade parts. Still need to finish it

1409728667813.3.jpg
1409728715980.4.jpg
1409728722305.5.jpg

Blades are actually pretty sharp. Need to be careful
1409728733556.6.jpg

1409728750435.7.jpg

This piece in particular had the worst warping
1409728790577.8.jpg

I also got these cheap gloves with a rubber palms to put the hand armor on. Comfy and snug
1409728824873.9.jpg

Also the shin is done, and I just need to coat the inside with some fiberglass cloth or mat
1409728881880.10.jpg
1409728891898.11.jpg
1409728897533.12.jpg'

I was worried about that im going to do about these parts on the knees and various other parts on the armor
1409728906651.13.jpg

So thats when I bought this. Expanding foam to seal up those places I couldnt get to with fiberglass cloth or mat
1409729021880.14.jpg

I also bought this string of red LED's to save me time and work on making a working circuit with the limited LED's I have
1409729096278.15.jpg

Ive been shopping a lot. I also bought (and im so happy for this) a flexible one way god reflective visor. Very thin for a visor. Like cartstock. Perfect to fit the irregular shape of Striker's visor
1409728577880.1.jpg

And finally, just because I can, I got the official Striker Eureka dog tags
1409729146451.16.jpg

Well thats it from me. Not a whole lot done since my last update. I'll try and get some work done on it tomorrow. Peace :)

Badass! Gipsy Danger is on my list of costumes to make once I get my skills up

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Hey guys. I know its been a long time since I made an update, and honestly, I've got little to no work done on Striker. I just havent had time when juggling full time work, college, girlfriend and other responsibilities. Its tough. But what I do want to mention is what I have gotten done.
I got supports glued into a lot of parts to prepare for fiberglass.
1411893759706.1.jpg
1411893772720.2.jpg
1411893787843.3.jpg

I also got a fully functional arduino and servo system to use for the opening chest plates
1410415469204.1.jpg

This awesome flexible visor material to use for the helmet
1409728577880.1.jpg

And to help me build parts when I'm out working, I'm going to invest in this
61ZivxMkV3L._SL1500_.jpg
The UP! Plus 2 3D Printer

I plan to use this 3D printer to print out a new helmet, since I'm not happy with the fiberglass one I made. Also to print multiple details as shown
400214-striker-eureka-pacific-rim-007_(1).png
400124-product-silo.png
And to print the chest missiles

I also fiberglassed the entire hand and forearm, but thats about it. For 3 weeks, I wish I had more to share :(

Hope to get more done

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Where did you get the visor? I think that looks amazing! Do you have a link to a site or did you pick it up at a store? How much?

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Incredible work! You got mad skillz!!

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Thank you all for your support. I know I havent been making any progress lately, and my deadline for Halloween is clear out the window. Plus I've had a little less motivation since I broke up with my girlfriend. I'm still trying to make time for Striker

So After I got my printer in the mail, I started exporting parts into STL programs, and printing them while I'm not home so I can make progress on Striker non stop. Also I took the wings from the raw OBJ from the Jaeger resource thread and prepared the wing tips for printing, with the included vents that the pep file doesnt have.

I have them printing right now

I wish I had more time to work on Striker. Sorry guys

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Hey guys, I;m back again. Since I just dont have all the time I used to have to build Striker, my 3D printer has been making progress for me. And its been a huge step forward for me. I've learned a lot about 3D modeling so far, and I was able to retrieve certain parts that I want to 3D print. I'm also going to try to 3D print the chest plates because i'm not happy with the paper ones. Especially after the alterations I made to it. It cant hold its shape and its bent to fit my body, which is bad when fiberglassing. The chest pieces that open for the missles, and the armor that harbors the red lights. So I'm going to 3D print those parts only. I'm going to try to keep the rest of the chest paper because it would take SO MUCH filament to 3D print it. ANyway, here is some progress so far. I love how the wings have the vents in them now
1412752356538.2.jpg
1412752364659.3.jpg
1412752370193.4.jpg

Here it is in contrast to the pep one I made a while ago actually
1412752425633.5.jpg
1412752450517.6.jpg

But it is a little too good to be true. For some reason, when py printer prints long, straight edges, they tend
to warp, and its causing alignment problems
1412752470621.7.jpg
1412752479915.8.jpg
1412752487555.9.jpg

But its something that should be fixed with some sanding and filler. Hopefully I'll FINALLY glass the thigh. I've had it ready, but I just havent gotten around to doing it

Re: Building a Jaeger: Striker Eureka (Pic Heavy)

Hey guys. Weather hasn't been very cooperative to glass more parts on Striker, but I have been working on something else. Been honing my 3D modeling skills to print some more parts. This week I've been working on making the chest headlights. To start, a very good man on United Prop Builders on Facebook helped me make this functional set up using an A23 12V battery and it works beautifully.
1620517_760431500685108_7699552673503154460_n.jpg

Since im no longer happy with the pep ones, I started modeling headlights form the OBJ. file on the Jaeger resource thread, and made some holes to place the led's. Its going to look NICE
headlight.png

After I finished that, I started working on this. A 3D wearable model of the inner workings of the shoulders and the chest missiles. Its not easy since I want the arms to telescope, but im doing my best.
missiles.png

That's all from me. Looks like I need to add "3D printed" to the title lol

...
But it is a little too good to be true. For some reason, when py printer prints long, straight
edges...

Check the various 3D printing threads. The different temperatures in a long printed part cause tension in the parr if you dont have an enclosed and heated build room.

Hey guys. I know thread has gone a bit dead. Life hit me like a brick, and resulted in me having to withdraw from a college class. I really want to get back to work on Striker soon, but he had to be shelved for the time being. But even that still hasn't stopped me. I commissioned a professional to model a 3D printable version of Striker's head since I'm not happy with the one I peped. He sent me a W.I.P pic to me a few minutes ago, and I have to say, money well spent.
