Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Looks great, Leigh. I note you haven't made a gasket line for the second half of the mould, will the slush resin be too thick to leak or do you plan to cut one in?

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

OOPS! You got me :D I didn't think to do that & it's too late to cut one in now :eek Lesson learned :) Thanks :thumbsup

I guess there'll be a bit extra flashing to trim off :facepalm

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

LOL. Shouldn't be a big deal with slush anyway. You've already got the second half curing I take it?

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Yep, just poured the last coat of rubber :)

I was hoping to get the jacket made up first thing in the morning, that would give the rubber 12-14 hours of curing before making the jacket.
Is that enough?? or should I leave the rubber to cure for longer before hitting it with polyester??

:)

Are you talking about the little groove/channel that can be carved into the perimeter of the mold's edge?

Also is it really that helpful? I only see it only some molds and not others? Is there a reason not to have that feature?

Also, can't that be just pressed into the clay before pouring the silicone too.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

I'm really impressed by the clean and professional mould making you're doing...not to mention the sculpting :)

What you're doing with the teeth etc, I've used that method when moulding hands/fingertips as I was fed up with getting bubbles in them!

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Thank you :)
So it should work then :D That's good news :) Thanks :thumbsup

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

OK, The moulds all done :D

I might give it a test run tomorrow morning, at the moment I'm giving the parts of it a little airing in the garden to de-fume a bit :)
I've had a good close look over the inner mould surfaces & I cant find a single bubble :D All the parts fit together like a dream :D :D

Polyester and silicone don't have a whole lot to say to each other, chemically speaking, AFAIK. Doubt there's any cause for concern. Mould looks good!!

Yup.

Also is it really that helpful?

Can be. Mould I made a couple of weeks back had an inadequate gasket and leaked a fair bit. Fortunately I was about to make another that was nearly identical, for a part that had the same interior but a slightly different outside. I split the first mould, re-cut the female gasket line deeper and made a new top half for that mould, so that it had a taller male gasket. Worked a treat. (For the second mould I used the original top half from the first mould, plus the second master, instead of claying that piece up. It had a male gasket which was proven inadequate so I removed it and cut a new female line into the mould piece, so that the new lower half when I poured it would have the taller male gasket required. Silicone ain't cheap in Oz, this saved a lot of waste.)

I only see it only some molds and not others? Is there a reason not to have that feature?

Depends on a lot of things - resin viscosity, setting time, ambient temperature, all sorts of things. If you have a wide flange around the part and a good mating surface, you may not need it.

Also, can't that be just pressed into the clay before pouring the silicone too.

Sure; that gives a more pro-looking result too if you take your time. I also build them up off the clay bed, using a worm of clay. Depends on how much time you have.

Thank you :)

Promising!

Thank you mate :)

Interestingly, I've noticed that it seems the silicone has absorbed the pong from the polyester :confused

That's why I aired the moulds yesterday. Its quite odd, the silicone smells very strongly of polyester yet the polyester parts no longer have a strong odour?

I shall be running a cast at some stage this morning :) I'm looking forward to see how it comes out :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

OK Well, I wouldn't say the first cast was a 100% success but I'm certainly not disappointed :)

I've learned some useful stuff here... Firstly I'll add that Gasket line into the mould next time as I did get a bit of flashing. It didn't leak out of the mould but I'd prefer less flashing. The flashing broke off cleanly with very minimal clean up though :)

I will make up a stainless steel rod to replace the wooden rod I used to cast the hinge holes into the jaw, the wooden one stuck fast despite using release on it :facepalm

I'll need to use a bit more resin for each cast of the jaw, it's a bit thin in places. I used 600g, in future I'll use 700g-750g.

I need to work on my slushing technique :)

The fangs failed to come out well but I do know what went wrong there. Yesterday I cleaned the mould with soap n water, those little holes left by the sprue retained a bit of water. I did try to blow the water out but I guess there was still some in there. The water combined with the talc I used on the inside of the mould as well :rolleyes When I de-moulded this the tips were sticky so I guess the water also inhibited the curing at the tips, however the front teeth have come out as intended :)

Other than that I'm really pleased with the cast :D There are no bubbles & all the detail has come out really well :)

I can't see the pix yet as I'm at work (but will be checking it out as soon as I get home), but just wanted to say that a gasket line won't stop flashing, but it will help to stop the resin from running right out. You will probably always have some flash somewhere. The other thing is that water and resins isn't usually a good combination, especially with urethanes which tend to foam up if there is any moisture present.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

For a first cast, that looks great. I'm excited to see the rest of the pieces cast and assembled!

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

I love your work, very clean!
The shape of the bust is fantastic too!

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Many thanks guy's :)
Alan, the foaming thing seems like what happened at the tip's of the teeth, Thanks :)
I've now managed to dry the mould fully, I need to clamp the jacket together in more places so I'm going to pick up some bolts & wing nuts for that.
It should work better next time :)
This first cast wont go to waste, I have uses for it :)

I'm busy making a mould for the upper teeth at the moment, I'll post a pic when its done :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Bloody magnificent!!!

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Thanks guy's :)

Here's those front upper teeth:

Even though I dusted the mould well I'm still getting air trapped in the tips of the fang's :confused
I didn't use the sprue technique with the upper teeth mould just to see if it would work any better without them.
Its an easy fix with a tiny bit of stopper or putty but I wanted them to come out perfect every time. Other than the tips of the fangs I cant complain, in fact I'm very happy so far :)

When you cast them pour a little resin into the teeth and tease it into the tips with a cocktail stick then pour in the rest with the top plug in. When you talk the mould make sure you bang or blow out as much as you can so there's none stuck in the tips of the teeth.
