Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Looking at Giger's paintings of other creatures etc his teeth are always very tidy, nicely gapped & look right size wise. I have wondered if the teeth on the original Alien are one of the things he would have changed if he'd had more time, freedom etc

I take that back! with alot of work on the jaw, lowering the hinge point & tiny adjustments here & there it is possible to get the teeth to mesh quite well & I'm really pleased with how this has worked out.

By lowering the hinge point it also sits in the open position correctly.
I've also done some other mods to jaw arround the back, I just need to chuck some clay at it now & it should be ready for another mould.

Heres some pics:

OHH MAN! It just gets better and better.wonderful work....

Many thanks for all the kind words chaps :)

I think you tightened the teeth up a bit too much. I think the gaps between the teeth looked better. He appears to be smiling now. I thought it was fine back at this point:

The fangs do look very close in those last pics, but the mouth is completely closed.
In all the reference pics the mouth is always open about 5/16", with Bob's mouth slightly open the gaps do reappear & the fangs as they are now are anchored in the same spot they were in the pic you liked.
The smile could be exaggerated by the amount of white paint arround the mouth, a bit like the red arround the Jokers mouth :confused

I could pop a pic up with his mouth slightly open, close up on the fangs :confused

What do you think folks?? more input on these points could be good :)

Edit: check out the pic at the top of post 180, thats how the teeth are now but the mouth is slightly open. All I've done since that pic is fill the all the holes & reset the jaw.

Just saw this thread. Shhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiii this is some amazing work. I think the teeth and jaw both look great the way they are. Really excited to see more photos

For someone looking for casting help in his first post, you seem like an expert sculpter. If you were going to do multiple casts I would suggest you make it so that you can sculpt: head only, tongue only, and chest only. I would also say you should make a scull-like version and a smooth version of the head. It shouldn't be two much trouble the way you have sculped it to cast one and then drop a new section in and cast it. With a little different paint scheme it will look like you have 2 completely different characters for the price of 1 and a half sculps. Plus if you decide to sell anything, you will have all sorts of options and price points.

Thanks guys (y))

Thats pretty much the plan.
The head, jaw, lips n tendons, tongue, neck & upper body will all be cast separately.
The first cast of the head will be used to create the cowling (smooth cover) of the top of the head in clay & then a mould of that will be added to the collection.
From that mould I can either cast a resin buck for vac forming or (if I'm brave) I could try casting a clear resin cowling.
For the moment I'm concentrating on getting the head & jaw ready for moulding & cast in resin before I go any further with the neck & upper body.

:)

Thanks Chap's :)
It doesnt look like I've done much (been busy doing other things) but I decided to reshape the rear of the jaw as seen in the last few pics.
I had to cut it in two places either side & glue it back together in a more open position to fit up against the reshaped cheeks. I had intended to use clay to on those area's to rebuild the detail but I chose to use polyester filler. I then carved the detail back into it, it also hugs the inside of the cheeks very closely without touching. I chose to use the polyester as I can hollow out the inside a bit more without weakening it & make the final cast very much lighter, it was a kilo of urethane before!
I've already started to remove material from the inside but theres a bit more to go. I also decided to paint the jaw in a dark, matt finnish & I used enamel paint with a sponge to put the texture back into the area's I'd sanded smooth, The green colour was only used as I had more of it.
since I'd painted the jaw Clutch's comment was rattling arround in my head so I painted the teeth just to see how they look.
I just need to crack on with the cheeks now, I still havent clayed the other one & the first one needs to be a bit rounder.

Clutch does this look any better?? with the paint & the mouth open the right amount :) ?

Looks better everytime I check in.
If you do cast this up. You can add glass balloons to the resin as a filler. It dramatically lights the casts. They won't be as strong but will so much lighter. You also use less resin so it's a win win situation.

This is just a brilliant project. Hats off to you for tackling this and making it look as effortless and as great as it is.
